ACL Preview: Colour Revolt

This being the week leading up to ACL, we’re going to preview the Festival by offering you a feature of a few bands we’re pumped about seeing. We’ll try to keep it to bands that might be a little left of center or not quite on everyone’s radar. Today, we take a quick look at Colour Revolt out of Oxford, Mississippi. A short bio, song preview and a ton of links after the jump.

Colour Revolt got all kinds of hype after the release of their self-titled EP in 2006, and were featured as a band to watch on several major music websites including Stereogum. This hype quickly dissipated after the band received mostly negative/mixed reviews from critics over their 2008 debut full length LP Plunder, Beg and Curse (Pitchfork of course offered a completely scathing review). Most of the reviews seemed unwarranted and based on a sound critics wanted from the band, not focusing on the high points of the release. I found the Oxford boys LP intriguing, unique and a pretty ballsy attempt at making a different type of hard rock record. On top of the studio recordings, Colour Revolt brings a fire, passion and intensity to live shows that few bands can recreate. If you caught the band during this years SXSW in Austin, you know what I’m talking about. You can check out this killer live set Sunday at 4:40pm on the BMI stage. Get a preview of the band’s music with a song from their debut LP entitled “Naked and Red” or check out stripped down versions of these songs on a live set from DaytrotterColour Revolt’s myspace page also has several songs to enjoy and some live video from the previously mentioned SXSW performance.
