FT5: School’s Out!
School’s Out!! School’s Out!! School’s Out!! Ok, so I haven’t actually gotten out of school or had a vacation that lasted longer than a week in close to 10 years. But I am sure we have plenty of students and teachers joining us here at the ATH … so today’s Top 5 is for you. Instead of writing a boring list of songs about summer, I’ve decided to spice things up a bit. These are my Top 5 songs about rebelling against all things school-related… tests, homework, teachers, parents, etc. It’s about sticking it to the man… because if you wanna rock, you gotta break the rules. So happy summer to everyone that has to go to school. Enjoy this handy playlist to listen to on your last day.
5. Beastie Boys – (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)
“You wake up late for school man you don’t wanna go. You ask your Mom, “Please?” but she still says, “No!” How many times has this happened to you? How about every day of your life? Quite possibly one of the Beastie Boys most well-known hits, it was released on their 1986 breakthrough album Licensed to Ill. Many of you may be asking why this song wasn’t higher on the list. First off, the boys only rap about school on the first verse. So it’s not completely a school song, but more of a party song. Secondly, the song was intended as a parody and they dislike it so much that it hasn’t been performed live since 1987. But with all that aside, I still think it deserved a mention.
4. Nirvana – School
So Kurt Cobain is so upset about this whole “no recess” thing that he wrote a song about it. And by write a song about it, I mean he just says “no recess” over and over for about 3 minutes. But after thinking about the song a bit, I found that it’s pretty damn depressing (Kurt Cobain depressed!? shocker, I know) to think that the real world is just like high school all over again (especially if you teach at an actual high school). And for Kurt Cobain, that was the Grunge scene. So replace the word “Grunge” with whatever industry you happen to be in, and the song “School” is actually for everyone. So there you go, kids. You have that to look forward to.
Come on guys, tell us how you really feel. If anything, the Replacements just came out and said what every teenager thinks on a daily basis. While Pink Floyd was busy writing elegant protest songs against rigid education, the Replacements cut right to the chase. Let’s take the chorus, for instance… “F*ck School, F*ck School, F*ck My School.” I mean, what else is there left to say? Released one year after the 1981 album “Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take out the Trash”, this song and the whole album Stink kicked the teenage angst up a notch. I wonder how many 80s kids spray-painted the name of this song on the side of their school gym?
2. Ramones – Rock ‘n’ Roll High School
Rock ‘n’ Roll High School is a song about blowing up your school. Literally. I mean who better to write a song about rebellious youth than Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee Ramone? And somehow, they managed to take a 2 minute punk rock song and make it into a 93 minute movie of the same name. It’s basically just the Ramones blowing a bunch of shit up and throwing books around while PJ Soles dances around and worships them. I mean, the school can’t keep principals employed because the students love rock ‘n’ roll more than learning! Also, there’s this: “I just wanna have some kicks, I just wanna get some chicks.”
1. Alice Cooper – School’s Out
Alright, Alright, Alriight. In all honesty, the main reason I put this song in the top spot is because it was featured in the ultimate high school movie, Austin’s very own Dazed and Confused. Every time I hear it all I can think about is Wiley Wiggins repeatedly touching his nose and Ben Affleck yelling “Y’all ready to bust some ass!” If you think that can’t be topped, the song was used in Rock ‘n’ Roll High School and covered by Alvin and The Chipmunks for a VHS special. Like our number two song, School’s Out For Summer also references blowing up your school (to pieces, to be exact). And according to Alice Cooper, school’s not just out for summer… it’s out FOREVER!
So there you go, kiddos. If you do happen to get in trouble with your parents for listening to some of these songs, please tell them you got the playlist from The Austinist. Any other songs I missed?
