SXSW Interview: Letting Up Despite Great Faults

Los Angeles outfit Letting Up Despite Great Faults released their Paper Crush EP last year on Old Flame Records, and we jumped all over it.  It had this really warm feeling lurking beneath the dream-like pop that the band crafted.  As they prepare to head down for SXSW, band member Kent took some time out of their schedule to fill out a brief interview…check out their responses.

ATH:  What is the most challenging thing about being a band during SXSW or another similar festival?

Kent: Balancing your time as a musician and as a fan. With so many amazing acts it’s difficult at times to pull yourself away to play a show.

ATH:  What are some tips you would offer newbie bands to survive during SXSW or just in general on tour?

Kent: Well touring and SXSW are different beasts… My advice on tour is to pace yourself. There’s a long road ahead of you and if you blow your load up front you’ll suffer in the end. SXSW is the complete opposite, DON’T HOLD BACK!

ATH: What music are you guys currently jamming in your tour bus?

Kent: Everyone we want to see at SXSW: Blouse, Craft Spells, Silver Swans, Turf War, Youth Lagoon, You Won’t, and so many more…

ATH: Who wins the Euro Cup this summer? It’s okay to tell us you hate soccer.

Kent: Everything we’re interested in of Euro sports can be summed up in Tony Parker and the Gasol Bros.

ATH:  Due to licensing, you’ve had to change the band name, or else you get sued! What do you change it to?

Kent: There are too many word on our name to ever have a legal conflict, but if we’d have to, we’d probably just drop a word. I’ll let you do the math on the total number of combinations we could get.

ATH: It’s fairly early in the musical year. What’s in store for your band before the world ends in December?

Kent: We plan on touring, U.S., UK/Europe, maybe Japan again… and anywhere else that’ll have us. We also plan on releasing a new album this year. We’re keeping busy in o’12

ATH:  What’s the best pre-show beverage for the band? Let’s get brand specific! And, what’s the worst free shot we can buy you at SXSW?

Kent: Best pre-show is a tall glass of R. Kelly… Specifically, R. Kelly vs Broken Social Scene – I’m a Flirt (Shoreline) by The Hood Internet. Worst shot probably a Markers Mark with a Shiner Bock chaser… As a band we love goofs, so feel free to really stick it to us with that drink.

ATH: Being out on tour, what’s the one thing you miss about being back at home?

Kent: The ones you love, and a good night’s sleep…

ATH:  Best band of all time is….?

Kent: The one that’s with you during the best times. The one that gets you though the worst times. The one that influences you to be better.
