Show Pics: Blind Pilot @ La Zona Rosa (7/13)

Blind Pilot has a habit of bring along outstanding openers. Last time it was Dan Mangan. This time, we had Lost Lander.

Despite it being a Friday the 13th, +1 and I headed to La Zona Rosa after a nice dinner, joining what seemed to be many other couples on a date night. And why not? Both bands ooze with sensible songwriting conducive to holding hands and swaying a little while singing along.

Pics and more notes after the break…

Blind Pilot is a known. We saw them just recently at a sold out show at the Parish. It is tough to go from the mecca of perfect sound and outstanding lights to La Zona for a band like them (nothing against the place but Parish punks LZR for sound). But we were very interested in Lost Lander. Nathan digs their debut release and I understand why.

Originating in Portland, Matt Sheehy started the band while recording an album with producer Brent Knopf. Growing to a four piece, they released DRRT at the start of the year. We have featured two of their songs, one of which from allll the way back in May of last year. We had a feeling they would give Blind Pilot a run given our streak of openers out-doing the headliners in the last few months. Even though Lost Lander‘s style more suits my ear, just a hint of synth work thrown in, more pop driven than folk, they had a few rough edges, but only obvious when you have Blind Pilot following you.

Speaking of Blind Pilot, they just sound great. They could make a high school lunch room sound good. Multi-instrumental layered good. The band so enjoys their time on stage. Smiles are frequently flashed as they make eye contact and have little conversations through song. I know that sounds cheesy, but that is why people like them. Blind Pilot is a band that involves you and it is a good reason why date night at Lazona Rosa was a success.
