SXSW 2014 Interviews: LA Font

Breathing deep the forces of evilAs if you haven’t read enough of our interviews at this point, here comes another one from L.A. based group LA Font.  They are one of many great bands on the local Fleeting Youth Records label that will be coming to town during SXSW.  If you haven’t taken heed to the band’s music, you should check them out now on bandcamp.  Follow the jump for full interview.

ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. What’s your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?

Danny: Spend the first 15 minutes dazzling the crowd with our electrifying stage banter.

ATH: The festival caters to music fans, but food and booze are an important aspect of the fans and the bands.  What’s your band’s food and beverage of choice?

Danny: Greg doesn’t eat meat, Harlow won’t touch vegetables, I’ll drink anything and Jon is really into science.

ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town.  Who would you ideally like to play with of the 1000s of bands gracing our city? Make your own optimal line-up.

Greg: Ava Luna, Ex Hex, Habits, Jay-Z, Barack Obama.

ATH: We are partial to SXSW obviously, but what festival do you feel is the best around?

Greg: We love the Echo Park Rising festival that The Echo puts on in the streets of Echo Park in L.A. It’s kind of similar to South By because there are bands playing everywhere there’s an open electrical outlet, but it’s all Los Angeles bands, and it ropes in everyone from the bands that just formed yesterday to the local bands who got on the radio over the last year.

ATH: Let’s say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street.  The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you.  The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd seems angry at the world.  How would your band deal with such a situation?

Greg: What’s 6th street?

Danny: I’d try to incorporate pizza into the solution

ATH: What’s your favorite album to come out in the last year?  What’s playing in the tour bus?

Danny: Cate Le Bon’s Mug Museum. All day at work when people ask me for favors I sing her lyric under my breath “I can’t help you…” Tour bus? You mean 1998 Ford Explorer?

ATH: The digital age is upon us, like it or not.  What are your band’s thoughts on streaming services like spotify, pandora, etc.?  Blow em all up?  Or embrace the future?

Danny: It’s chill. I mean we went from making no money to making no money. So that took some adjustment

ATH: Day parties have replaced showcases for music discovery?  Is the conference really completely upside-down?

Greg: Is there anything better than being outside in the sunshine with your friends, eating burritos and listening to music? I feel like that answers the question.

Thanks again boys for making the time!
