Levitation Fest – The Saturday Preview

levitationSaturday is THE day. No days are bad, but Saturday is chock-full of ridiculous talent. Ultimate Painting and Parquet Courts have been covered and talked about til the Internet was blue in the face…and apparently this Brian Wilson guy is a big deal. Plus, you’ve got perennial indie rock powerhouses in Animal Collective and Black Mountain, but let me point you in the right direction, a little off the beaten path, perhaps.

Annabelle Chairlegs – This Austin group is one of the hottest group’s in town, and while you may or may not know it, it’s the simple truth. We were fortunate enough to grab the band and get them on our Slack Capital Compilation; their track gets non-stop play, and they blew the audience away at the release show. Whether you’re local or coming in from out-of-town, this is a must see band.

Nots – These four ladies are going to bring it. They play a brooding blend of rock n’ roll, bordering more on dangerous punk rock than psychedelic, but I love how the festival has begun to broaden the horizons just a bit to pull in some of these bands. Bursting onto the scene with We Are Nots, this is a group still intent on making a statement. More danger than darkness, this is a set that could make your weekend.

Katelyn Aurelia Smith – This is one of those acts that really makes sense, now that we’ve moved from Psych Fest to Levitation. Katelyn’s sound is entirely electronically based, but I think her work involves massive experimentation in the realm of sound…and that seems to be some of the festival’s big moves. She just released her latest album, Ears, further exploring what all can be done within the confines of certain genres.
