Celebrate Seven Years of Gold Flake Paint with New Compilation

This week marks 7 years that the site Gold Flake Paint has been up and running, and while it may be odd for us to hype another blog/site, I think it’s important to give credit where credit is due. Why the love? Let me count the ways…

First, the site has been extremely supportive of our work on our own label ATH Records, running countless pieces on our artists…like yesterday’s piece on Summer Salt. Each piece is thoughtful and well written, reminiscent of other sites years ago. But, their support is honestly just a small nod to the site’s hard work.

As another site/blog, I know the countless emails that cross the desk with new songs and new stories. Many sites take the easy route, simply copying and pasting the press release and running a song. But, Tom and his team don’t operate that way. Each post has new descriptors and thoughts, which might not seem like a huge move considering the nature of music journalism, though it shows they’re actually listening to the music. They pick each song and give it the proper attention, often coming up with new ways at looking at your favorite songs.

Speaking of the songs, I have the utmost respect for GFP andtheir ability to lead towards discovery. A lot of sites have a different mentality, chasing site visits and revenue, and that’s all fair and well (free market blah blah), but one can only see the same posted song so many times. For my ears, I love discovering something new, something to cherish…and GFP is one of the few that still seems to unearth gems. If you’re tired of the daily dosage of Ty Segall side-projects and the latest gossip on who’s beefing’ in the rap game, then better bookmark GFPnow.

Ultimately, I write this post due to my amazement at how quickly the site has been able to amass and curate a very unique community. There’s tons of diverse music in the world, but for a lot of us, especially when we were younger, it was the sense of community that called to us…a feeling of belonging. It’s not every day you can visit a site and find that, even at my old age. Just look at the labels 7th year celebratory compilation, Something Left to Love. Many artists, including Austin’s Julia Lucille, have donated their music to GFP, illustrating my point. And, even better is that all proceeds from the compilationgo straight to The Survivors Trust and The Poverty Alliance.

So celebrate the site, celebrate community…and then stay for the music. Stream the compilation below.
