SXSW Interview: Weakened Friends

There’s less than a month until SXSW hits, and so we’re going working to get all these interviews up, so you can be an informed consumer. Today we’re sharing our chat with Weakened Friends, fresh off the release of Common Blah late last year. They currently have me wondering what on Earth a mommy carwash is? Can my wife go? These are things you and I both need to know!

ATH: Whats the name of the band/group? Where are you from?

WF: Weakened Friends from Portland Maine

ATH: Describe your groups sound.

WF: Fuzzy, loud, poppy grunge.

ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases from 2019?

WF: We put out our first full length record “Common Blah” back in October of 2018, released it with the lovely folks at Don Giovanni Records. We’re writing a ton right now and are going to hunker down later this year to make a second record, not sure if we’ll get anything out before year end, but would be cool to get a single out at least before the end of 2019! So fingers crossed.

ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. Whats your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?

WF: Well we’re used to playing 30 min sets and in my opinion, its the shorter the better; give it your best and leave people wanting more. We have a set in mind, maybe even try and throw in a new song or two.

ATH: Lets say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd seems angry at the world. How would your band deal with such a situation?

WF: Crack a cold one and turn it up to 11 baby!!!!!

ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Of the 1000+ bands coming into town, who would you ideally like to play with. What band friends will be here?

WF: Too many to say honestly! We’re playing with some pretty kick as bands already! So we’re pretty happy about that.

ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?

WF: Well, first off we made this playlist on Spotify called “Mommy Carwash;” it’s an eclectic mix of hits all moms kinda know and love! Seriously check it out it rocks! But as far as new music goes, we’re super into the band The Beths record “Future Me Hates Me” I got really into the Boy Genius stuff as well! Those are the two that come to mind right now!

ATH: Describe your perfect festival, real or not? Whos headlining? Wheres it take place? Etc.

WF: Mommy Carwash, The Playlist, The Festival 2019. Headliners include, Faith Hill, Heart, The Pretenders, Sarah Mclaughlin, Taylor Swift (playing only the early stuff), Paula Cole, Sherly Crow and more.

ATH: Whats on the bands rider? If were bringing you food and booze, what can we bring you?

WF: Veggies and hummus, chips and salsa, polar seltzer, and good craft beer.

ATH: The band gets to create their own taco pop-up shop at SXSW? Whats the name, and what sort of tacos will you have? Any sides?

WF: It would be called “Man, I feel like a Taco”. Good vegan tacos, just a side of Mommy Carwash, the playlist blasting, on the big speaker.
