ACL Gimme 5 – Ley Line

As you can tell by the barrage of posts recently, we have jumped head first into ACL Festival coverage with tons of previews, guides, and recommendations. Today I am kicking off my yearly feature of Gimme 5 playlists with several performing artists selecting 5 of their favorite songs from other bands playing the festival. Last year seemed like a rousing success so I sent out a ton of these this year to collect a varying perspective on performing acts. My very first feature comes from our local friends in Ley Line. Hit the jump for their playlist and some words on each song.

Side Bar: Ley Line was recently featured as the KUTX artist of the month. And now the picks…

1. Rosala – “Malamente”

I love the percussive elements in the song, the rhythmic clapping that keeps the song driving. Instrumentally its pretty simple but the beat keeps it grooving the entire time.

2. Natalia Lafourcade – Hasta La Raz

This song is an incredible fusion of folklore rhythm woven with melody and lyrics that speak to spiritual journey through this life of discovering oneself.

3. Ximena Sariana – Que Tienes

I love the groove of Sarianas music and in Que Tienes, I am captured by her smooth R&B vocals and the hints of reggaeton in this Mexican pop song.

4. Tierra Whack – Hungry Hippo

Tierra Whack is truly original, and puts on one of the most high energy shows Ive experienced. I had the chance to see her at ACL and during Hungry Hippo she has the entire crowd jumping up and down singing along and in the blink of an eye the one minute song was over. She really takes you on a journey

5. Tame Impala – “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards”

We are all big Tame Impala fans, their music was the soundtrack to my college days. This song in particular I added because it brings back a pretty funny memory from New Years 2017 when we had our first writing retreat in New Orleans. At the strike of midnight the DJ put on this song which seemed a little somber for a new years celebration but I loved the irony as we all sing along.

Austin based Ley Line play Sunday of Weekend Two only on the Tito’s Stage at 12:45. Thanks again for the time and effort into the playlist. I’ve definitely found some new things to check out here.
