ACL Gimme 5 – Drew Holcomb

Hopefully those of you attending Weekend One of ACL Festival have survived and are possibly looking forward to another 3 days of fun in the cooler weather. I know I am looking forward to it and especially the new acts for W2. Drew Holcomb is one such act who didn’t play last weekend so he seems like a great choice to continue our Gimme 5 ACL playlists this week. He’s featured a few artists not yet mentioned by previous band so it should offer you something new. Hit the jump for his words and picks.

1. Yola – “Faraway Look”

The first time I heard this I felt like I was confident it was a 70s Harry Nillson song. Then I heard this voice, this big epic voice. I play this record in the kitchen when we are cooking dinner. Its great from start to finish.

2. Kacey Musgraves – “Late to the Party”

While her new album is definitely her best work, and deserving of all the accolades and Grammys, I still love her older work too. This track from Pageant Material is one of the best you and me against the world love songs out there.

3. Bruce Hornsby – “The Way it Is”

I love seeing legends on festival bills, especially people like Bruce Hornsby, who have iconic songs that everyone in the world knows. I remember this song on the radio all the time as a kid.

4. Joseph – “White Flag”

These 3 Portland sisters are some of my dear friends and also I love their music. White Flag is a great no surrender anthem. Every time I hear it I want to go out and climb a mountain or fight for a friend.

5. Judah & The Lion – “Why Did You Run?”

Another friend on the festival bill, these guys use to open for us, then they blew up. Always fun to see hard working, thoughtful, and honest people rise to the top. There is not a more energetic live show than theirs.

Thanks again to Drew for making the time to create this playlist for us. Drew will be playing with his band on Sunday at 12:30pm over on the American Express stage.
