Best Selling Jigsaw Releases in 2019

Chris from Jigsaw Records has been super kind to us over the years, and super kind to you all with his wonderful label. I reached out and asked for a list for 2019, no rules, no nothing…so he came back with his Best Selling Jigsaw releases…most of these were making waves at his brand new brick and mortar record shop in Portland, My Vinyl Underground.

I’m not typically one to toot my own horn, but I thought I would do a recap of the ten best sellers on the Jigsaw label in the shop for 2019. Just call me Chuck Mangione…

This year’s top seller was the new “Bae” 7″ EP from Portland’s own A Certain Smile, which contains a pair of catchy, immediate hits in the style of Pains Of Being Pure At Heart or the Drums, backed with a gentler tune in the vein of Brighter or Trembling Blue Stars, all housed in a handsome risographed sleeve that came in multiple color options. Fancy!

Next up is actually one of our most recent releases, “You’re So Jaded”, which is the stunning follow-up album from New Jersey’s Joy Cleaner – perfect for fans of the jangly indie rock/powerpop sound of Dogbreth or Diners.

Making a surprise third appearance is the Regrets from Seattle, who released their second EP titled “Endless Desire” on Jigsaw back at the beginning of the year. Jaunty indiepop in the vein of Voxtrot and it’s a real beaut!

Numbers four and five both come from my good buddies in Flying Fish Cove, with their debut album and follow-up EP, “At Moonset” and “En Garde”. I was actually their drummer for a spell, and even appeared on the latter EP, but don’t let that influence your decision…

After the Fishies’ double-hitter comes the debut album from Shiny Times, “Can’t Be Depressed”, which is the solo project of Kim from Tape Waves, which happens to sound a lot like their friends, Seapony!

Speaking of Seapony, the most recent album from Danny’s solo project, Space Daze, comes next on our list of top sellers. It’s called “Too Mystical” and was a wonderful sleeper hit.

Jigsaw has released a pair of cds from the excellent Amida from Manchester over the years, so we were the logical choice to do the self-titled mini-album from the new band of ex-Amida members, called Champion Of Youth. Great spiky indie rock for those who miss Urusei Yatsura!
Bandcamp

The interestingly-named Luck, Now come up next with their second EP, “Enough, For Now”, which followed their impossible to find (unless you shop at Jigsaw!) self-released debut EP. Great Italian powerpop for fans of Guided By Voices, etc.

Finally, we’ve got the debut EP from a band that seems to be blowing up the indiepop scene right now, Stars On Fire, and their “Blue Skies Above” mini-album and its hard-to-describe but easy-to-enjoy mix of dreamy and jangly noisepop.

We also released brilliant records from Slum Summer, Doggy, State Drugs and several others in 2019, but I guess they just didn’t make the cut…
