SXSW Interview: RDGLDGRN

Whew, it’s really hard to believe that we are a few short weeks away from the madness known as SXSW. I am starting to feel more ready, as I hope many of you are as well. As we tend to do, we’ve been hitting it pretty hard with the interview questions this year, and today I’ve got another one from Washington D.C. based group RDGLDGRN. Hit the jump for their answers to our hard hitting questions.

All responses come from band member Red (Marcus Parham).

ATH: Whats the name of the band/group? Where are you from?

Red: The name of the group is Red Gold Green (written RDGLDGRN) & Gold is from Romania, Green is Haitian (born in Boston), I’m from California, but were all from DC.

ATH: Describe your groups sound.

Red: Our sound is pop, world, rap.

ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases from 2020?

Red: In March 2020 we have our first release of the year, “Danger”, coming out and it is the lead off single for the movie we’ve written (which will be released in 2020).

ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. What’s your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?

Red: The plan is to get people movin and dancin ASAP and for them to remember the name. We interact with the crowd during the entire set so don’t show up thinkin’ ur too cool to have a good time u will get embarrassed.

ATH: Let’s say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd is growing ancy. How would your band deal with such a situation?

Red: We would probably pass out waters to everyone, tell them to remember to stay hydrated, then remind them we have a movie coming out this year and its going to be dope as hell.

ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Of the 1000+ bands coming into town, who would you ideally like to play with. Which band friends will be here?

Red: RAM, Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band, New Natives Brass Band, Big Wys Brass Band, our boys Broncho and Kosha Dillz, DJ Akuaa, Surfer Blood, Kompas Trio, Wow, Wez Atlas, Lake South, R2BEES, La Meme Gang, Madison McFerrin, Bluestaeb, Sofia Campos, P.E., Knucks, Hazy Sour Cherry, Haru Nemuri, The Hamiltones, Racheton, Cassper Nyovest, Nadia Nakai, Akeju, Salma Sky, Mpho Sebina, TENI, Benny Afroe, BILS, Yemi Alade, Tugboat Captain, Hector Coco Barez, Los Rakas, La Garfield, Dragon Rojo to name a few.

ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?

Red: UK Grime/Rap/Drill, Brasilian Sambas, We got it from here…Thank You 4 Your Service, The Go! Team, No One Ever Really Dies, The Clipse, Illmatic…

ATH: Describe your perfect festival, real or not? Who’s headlining? Wheres it take place? Etc.

Red: We are headlining @ Wembley.

ATH: What’s on the bands rider? If were bringing you food and booze, what can we bring you?

Red: Ginger Beer, bananas & peanut butter, avocados, plantain chips, water, grapefruit, gum

ATH: The band gets to create their own taco pop-up shop at SXSW? What’s the name, and what sort of tacos will you have? Any sides?

Red: It would be called Santos Tacos and we would serve only fish and veggie tacos, with sides of tostones.

Thanks again for making the time for this!
