Levitation Interviews: Psychedelic Porn Crumpets

Now that most of us have moved on from ACL and the madness of things at COTA, it’s time to turn our attention to a music Festival going down this weekend which is a ‘lil more aligned with the ATH team. As I’m sure most you music fans knew, Levitation kicks off on Thursday and we are here for it with some interviews, previews and general guides. Today I’m excited to share our second interview of the season with one from Perth based artist Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Hit the jump for their interview, set times, and tunes.

Responses were given collectively as a band.

ATH: Welcome to Levitation 2022! First off, Australia seems to have a strong contingent this year with quite a few bands represented. Why do you think Australia is becoming a hot bed for psych focused bands?

PPC: I think there’s quite a few countries that are championing the psych-leaning sounds at the minute, it just seems like a lot of attention is coming Australia’s way which is actually nice for a change. There’s definitely a couple of Aus bands that initially turned heads from that genre down-under, streaming services that suggest similar associated acts to listeners helped let that Aus-psych wave build momentum.

ATH: Speaking of, who are some bands from Australia, or more specifically Perth that we should be checking out?

PPC: Some Perth bands that we dig right now:

Yomi Ship, Hector Morlet, Grievous Bodily Calm, The Love Junkies, Shy Panther

ATH: This year saw the release of Night Gnomes back in April. Are you all pleased with the way it turned out? Anything you might go back and change?

PPC: Yeah we are really stoked with the Gnomes record and how its been received, think we all agree its the best headphone listen of the lot so far. Keeping the arrangements more simplified and less convoluted this time round was also a plus for the album, If we can keep tracking in that direction then its a good recipe.

ATH: How did your sound change or evolve on the latest album when compared to the first 1-2?

PPC: It’s a lot darker than the previous installments, bit moodier and maybe a bit less jangle. The vocals really push through on the new album, but more clarity between the layers rather than swimming in a tone soup.

ATH: So it’s been awhile since you’ve toured the US, anything you might be excited about doing, seeing, eating or drinking while here?

PPC: Jack really wanted another Po boy but New Orleans isn’t on the cards this time round. We are a bunch of food enthusiasts though so always down to try the local cuisines whenever we roll into town. Espresso Martinis and Old Fashioneds are the pre-show fuel on this run. The US really does have it all, so we are always looking forward to seeing all the sights (preferably not through a van window) & even better when theres time to explore further than just a few blocks around the venue.

ATH: What are some things you deeply miss about home when you go out on tour?

PPC: Our friends, families and significant others are deeply missed. Also our gardens, always dreaming about tending to our plots.

ATH: As part of a festival, who are some bands you are exciting about seeing during your time here?

PPC: Godspeeeeed You! Black Emperor a bucket list band to witness for sure! Thee Oh Sees (Osees) also super excited to watch.

ATH: Lastly, give us a pitch on why a fan should come by your show during a busy night in Austin? What’s in store for us?

PPC: Just full banter for an hour straight, classic gags.

Thanks again for making this time for us!

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets headline Mohawk on Friday the 28th. Looks like a few tickets are still for sale.
