Levitation 2022 – A Preview

Maybe you’ve heard about this thing called Levitation Festival going down this weekend in Austin? You haven’t? Well your boys at ATH are here to help with a little Festival preview and guide as you head out to the shows starting on Thursday. The number one thing to remember is — pace yourself, drink tons of water, and wear comfortable shoes. Okay that was three things, but you get the idea. Hit the jump for some nightly recommendations and tuneage.

So we figure no functioning human can hit more than three shows a night, hence our three show a night recommendations. Here’s where we’ll be.

THURSDAY:

The Jesus & Mary Chain, Promtomartyr, Automatic, and The Paranoyds @ Stubbs

This is likely the biggest and most sought after show of the weekend. It’s an early one so you’ll have plenty of time to hop over to something else after the outside show wraps up.

Os Mutantes, W.I.T.C.H., Imarhan, Claude Fontaine, Paint, and JJUUJJUU @ Empire

A really stacked lineup here with Imarhan being one of my bands to see of the weekend. Check out on interview I did with them this week here.

Slift with Megafauna @ Feels So Good

Just note that this venue changed from Parish to Feels So Good. Slift will be one of the heaviest sets of the weekend and I’m here for it.

UPDATE — the Slift & Megafauna show as been moved to Elysium

FRIDAY:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Legendary Pink Dots, Troller, and Grivo @ Empire

The Friday night set by Godspeed is one of 2-3 bands aren’t our “can’t miss” list for the weekend. We may hop around before the headliner, but we will surely be there when they kick off at 11:30PM.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Acid Dad, and Queen Serene @ Mohawk

Acid Dad is also high on the list of must sees and you’d be hard pressed to find a better overall lineup on Friday night. You can’t go wrong with this bill, especially with our local friends Queen Serene on the bill.

Mamalarky, Claude Fontaine, and Cosmic John of Acid Carousel @ Feels So Good

Noting again this venue changed to Feel So Good. We’ve been huge fans of Mamalarky for a long time and this is a great chance to see them in a smaller venue with records to buy after too many beers.

UPDATE — Mamalarky show has been cancelled!

SATURDAY:

Hunx & His Punx, Death Valley Girls, A Giant Dog, and The Pinks Rings @ Mohawk

Nathan and I have been huge Hunx fans since the release of Too Young to Be in Love back in 2011 so this is likely where we’ll be all night. Might be the best top to bottom lineup of the festival.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, The Murlocs, and Tropical Fuck Storm @ Stubbs

If I have to pick a night for one of the Gizzard shows, this is my preferred bill with Tropical Fuck Storm making this one slightly better than Friday night. We’ll likely be between here and Mohawk all night.

Meatbodies, The Well and Spoon Benders @ Antones

Heavy, psych rock inspired lineup with legends Meatbodies headlining and our pals The Well playing opener. This is a great option to get away from the Red River crowds.

SUNDAY:

Moon Duo Presents the Lightship with Al Lover @ Feels So Good

Once again, note the venue change here so you don’t show up to an empty venue. Moon Duo is another staple of ATH coverage so we will definitely end our night here.

Cold Cave, Soft Kill, SRSQ, Temple of Angels, Blushing and Lucid Express @ Empire

Have yet to hear the latest album from Cold Cave in a live setting so Sunday should be the perfect time to do so. Also a great chance for any out of towners to see our pals in Blushing.

L7, Pleasure Venom and Die Spitz @ Mohawk

If you want to see legends and want to wrap things up early on Sunday, this is where you should be. We hope to catch a few songs before heading over to Empire/FSG.

Look, this is by no means everything you can see this weekend, but it’s likely where we’ll be hanging. We failed to mention Black Angels, Trail of Dead, or multiple chances to see Osees, though I figure you probably knew about those show already.

Aaaaaand here’s a fancy ‘lil playlist featuring a bunch of the bands playing this weekend.
