ATH Showcase Recap

athshowcase_coverSo in case you didn’t hear, Austin Town Hall put on a little SXSW showcase last weekend.  We had 5 bands handpicked based on how much we like them and how much we wanted to hear them play live together.  All in all, the show turned off without a hitch and even ended on time for everyone to get their shit together and still get a beer afterward or make it to Auditorium Shores.  Follow the jump for a brief review of our bands and see some fancy photos.

SXSW In Pictures

sxsw2009pics_coverWe took loads of photos during SXSW and wanted to share just a few of the better ones with you.  We had some camera trouble during the week so we didn’t get everywhere we wanted to be, but we hope you like the shots we made out with. Our goal was to give you an idea of what SXSW is like with pictures of bands, crowds and people. Pictures of our showcase will be up for your enjoyment tomorrow. Follow the jump to see some random photography from our insane week of SXSW fun.

SXSW Top 10 Live Acts

sxsw_liveacts_coverIs anyone else just a little bit sad today as we wrap up another amazing SXSW Festival in Austin? I know we here at ATH are as depressed as anyone to head back into the real world today. Gone are the carefree days of roaming around downtown in search of the best music and the best parties with free red bull and vodka. While still nursing our hangovers and mending our bruises, we would like to share with you the best live acts that we caught this past week. You may have heard of most of these bands or they may be completely new to you, but regardless, these bands brought the noise at SXSW. We tried to be fair and pick the acts that either lived up to a certain hype or just rocked our faces to the floor.  Follow the jump for our top 10 live acts of SXSW.

SXSW Watchlist: Nobunny & Hunx and His Punx

hunx3nobunnyIf you get tired of wading through a sea of pretentious fixed gear kids with backwards hair, stumble on into the Bachelor Records showcase at Trailer Space Records around 7PM on March 19th to get your fill of the lo-fi rock & roll sounds of Nobunny and the queer stylings of Hunx and His Punx. Unfortunately, this Austin Town Hall contributor lays his head in Oklahoma and will be finishing up grad school while you’re out getting loaded and rocking your asses off with Nobunny and Hunx. Just be sure and have eight or nine for me.

SXSW Watchlist: Eulogies

eulogies321150_largeWith such a direct reference to sadness in their band name, you’d think that Eulogies might just be another one of those sad bastard types.  Leading man Peter Walker clarifies that he doesn’t focus on remembering the dead, but rather “saying those things that someone would say only at that moment but wish they had said right now”.  Take that idea of true sincerity in the lyrics with a superb backing indie rock band, and you’ve got Eulogies in a nutshell.  The band is also about to release their sophomore effort LP Here Anonymous out April 7th on Dangerbird Records.  Follow the jump to read a brief interview with front man Peter Walker, see some SXSW dates and hear a tune.
