Rose Melberg’s New Band = Knife Pleats

knifepleatsI think any fan of great indie rock the last several years has to agree that no matter what Rose Melberg touches, it’s going to be magic…in some way or another.  The last project we had from her was Imaginary Pants, but now she’s got a new outfit up and running, Knife Pleats. And yes, as always, Melberg and her pals fulfill the promise, creating hook filled tunes that make you feel young…and ultimately smile. The foursome will release Hat Bark Beach on September 29th via Lost Sound Tapes…with the CD version coming out later via Jigsaw…both reliable options for great tunes.

New Music From New Order

New OrderNew Order is a very important band to me. You people know that. It was one of the shows at Austin Music Hall that will make me miss that place when it is leveled.

As many artists from that pivotal time in my musical life have fallen apart or lost their way, New Order is kind of back to being themselves. No matter how much anyone laments Peter Hook‘s departure, the band has held on the sound that defined it’s later releases once free of Joy Division era material. …and I like those records. It should be a surprise that I am on board for the new self-produced record, Music Complete via Mute, that has the band finding inspiration by working with people like Brandon Flowers, Iggy Pop and Elly Jackson. The fist single “restless” is just straight up New Order. It is a level-setting single that I have a feeling preludes a more up and down affair when listening front to back.

Synth Pop From Bec Sandrige

11717581_937056243018850_8890552995881701439_oThis song took me a little while to get into it, but even in the first listen there was this striking quality to the vocals that pushed me to listen again. Bec Sandrige is an Australian act who makes disco pop that will set your feet to dancing and “In The Fog, In The Flame,” is no exception. Though groovy even at the outset, the synths slowly make their appearance in the track, but the vocals are distinctive and unique: at once strong and soft, warbling through the lyrics. Then those synths begin to soar through and what you have is a strong pop song with a catchy chorus. Listen below to this first song off the recently released In The Fog EP.

Ancient Warfare Share Apocalyptic Rock Track

AncientWarfare_photo4.byAnnSydneyTaylorAncient Warfare is a Kentucky based group of four who are about to release their debut LP to the masses in a short while, but have a bit of a taste of what’s to come to share with you today.”Gunsmoke” is a smooth rock track, with a slowed down du-wop rhythm and little nuances such as the violin that snakes its way through the background, all while the lead vocals dominate the mix. Just when you think that it’s going to stay in the same slow groove the whole track, the band kicks it up at the end for a little break down. Take a listen and get ready for what’s bound to be a great album in The Pale Horse, which is out August 11th via Alias Records.

Have You Heard New Lunchbox

lunchboxLunchbox returned last year with the most excellent, Lunchbox Loves You.  It seems to have ignited a fire beneath the band, as they’re already back with a brand new EP for your ears. It reminds me of taking the foundations of jangling indiepop and fusing it with the work of early Weezer (when everyone liked them, you know). Of course, that comparison brings nothing but hooks and great listens time and time again…there’s even some spots where you can fill in your own handclaps. You can grab their Smash Hits EP next week from Jigsaw Records.

Show Pics: Faith No More @ Austin Music Hall (7/26)

Faith No MoreOh my garsh, it was hot in there. I know they are maximizing before demise, but I’d gladly add a dollar to a beer if I could avoid sweating like a prize-fighter. The coolest place to be in Austin Music Hall was at the front door where air rushed in from the outside. It was like opening an airlock in space.

Anyway, Faith No More came to town and brought along Napalm Death. Merch was sold. Classics were played. Lyrics were sung by all in attendance. We have the pics and a few notes from me and maybe even from super-fan-Cleo when and if she ever recovers after the break.

Sleepy Lo-Fi Track From Good Morning

0005442881_10When I stumbled upon this track, at first I didn’t really know what to think about it, as it starts out incredibly slow and kind of just stays in that low place, but there was something about it that kept me coming back to listen to it more and more. “You,” from these Melbourne gentlemen that call themselves Good Morning, is the perfect combination of jam and chill. You see, the guitars have this sort of zen jangle to them, just distorted enough with twang but arranged in such a way that you are lulled into a trance by their constant motion. Then there are the vocals, which are just as distorted, but   ever so delicate. Check out the track below and be sure to listen to “On The Street” as well from the band over here.
