Cinerama vs the Wedding Present

the-wedding-present-valentinaI wish more people would talk about the Wedding Present.  David Gedge has long been a favorite of mine, and sometimes I feel like he slips under the radar.  But, he’s reviving one of his other projects, Cinerama, to spin the song’s from The Wedding Present’s last album, Valentina, in an entirely different manner.  Part of it is endearing, part of it is hilarious; it sounds like David’s doing his best Tom Jones impression…and it’s a damn good one. Gadgets voice will always have a special place in my heart. Listen below so you can compare and contrast the two versions before we get to hear it all reimagined; should be out this month.

ATX Spotlight: New Yuma Tune + Show Preview

11054385_1069905849688762_5689455370238310354_oLooks like this year’s going to be a great one for Yuma. The band has already released one new track, with this fresh number sure to stop you in your tracks.  “Loglo” is the name of the tune, and it’s likely to be one of the best pop tracks to come out of Austin this year.  You’ll hear a nice groove crafting a playful atmosphere, and the vocals add to that effect, making it the perfect jam for your pre-summer parties.  To celebrate the release of this new single, which you can grab HERE,  the band will be playing an incredible show at Blackheart on Saturday night.  Care Package (members of Borrisokane) opens the night, followed by Rose Selavy, Yuma and then Ramesh.  If you’re not planning on being at Levitation, this is the best possible show you can attend on Saturday night; we’re happy to be a part of it.

Show Preview: Crocodiles @ Holy Mountain (5.6)

CrocodilesPromo2

Date 05.06
Location Holy Mountain
Doors 8pm
Tickets 10 $ Here

Wednesday night ’round these parts has got you set out to make a tough decision as to how to spend your evening. Nathan already gave you a preview of the Stephen Merritt show that’s bound to be great, but I figured I’d throw a wrench in things and tell you about another show that’s sure to be a jangly guitar-rock filled good time. Crocodiles, who are on the verge of releasing their new LP, Boys are hitting Holy Mountain to give us some of the treats off that upcoming record. Having already spent some time with those new tracks, I can tell you it’ll be a smash. They’ll be joined by lovely locals ¿Qué Pasa? and Unknown Relatives which should make for a night brimming with psychedelic and hazy rock and roll. For ten dollars, you really can’t miss this.

Levitation Preview: Spiritualized

spiritualized01_website_image_photography_standardWhat’s that?  Levitation is this weekend!?  It seems like only yesterday we were talking about the chaos of SXSW and all that jazz.  So ready or not, ATH will be out this weekend in full force covering the festival just like you know we do.  Since we are just a few short days away, we’ll be spotlighting a few bands this week so maybe you’ll feel a bit more prepared.  I’m kicking this bad boy off today with a few words about huge veteran UK act Spiritualized.  Follow the jump for more.

Show Pics: Twin Bitches @ The Mohawk (4/30)

We had a fun night of having fun at The Mohawk. While reports of Kaiser Chiefs’ performance at Stubb’s trickled in with some vocal issues attached, Nathan, Nicole and I were enjoying local faves Slow and Jonly Bonly with a first time look at Twin Bitches. No issues here, other than wanting a few more people to join us. It was a full tilt batch of jams featuring broken guitar strings, pedal stomps, bass face and neck strains.

Really Enjoyed This Vows Tune

vowsThe first few minutes of splashing noise were a bit off-putting at first, but let this tune from Vows settle in on your ears.  You’ll find a casual bit of sunny pop bursting through your speakers, similar to what Of Montreal used to offer in their earliest days.  There’s an odd studio warble placed on the vocals, but if fits in quite nicely to the band’s sound on this track, as guitars cascade through the background.  The group will be releasing their new record, Soon Enough Love, on June 2nd via Section Sign Records.

ATH Premiere: Abram Shook

10343677_518284498314178_856904406646664692_nIn case you didn’t know, Austin’s own Abram Shook has got a new album due out next week via Western Vinyl, and I’m excited to debut a track from that record, Landscape Dream with you today. This song, “Perfect,” is a dreamy escape for four minutes that uses quiet vocals and effortless instrumentation to take you away from the daily mundane and into a better, gentler world. Personally, I’m loving the soft feel that this track has going for it, with each instruments’ contribution melting into the next so that the song dwells in between the genres of blues and folk. Get to listening and get excited for that album.

We’re Getting Closer to New Jeremy Jay

JeremyJayLondonTreesOur affinity for Jeremy Jay has been no secret, and I’ve grown increasingly interested in his music this year as he’s been handing out little hints here and there about his various projects.  He’s recently released this new tune, and it appears to be on the album Invisible Foxx, though I’m not sure if that’s the actual album or the name of a new project.  Regardless, I love the dark approach he’s taken here; he’s washed the mix with a quiet dosage of synthesizer while his vocals hold your interest.  It looks like Domino Publishing has gotten their hands on the new music, so it should be released real soon…fingers crossed.

Show Preview: Stephin Merritt @ Central Presbyterian (5.6)

smLet’s face it, once we wake up on Wednesday morning, it’s going to be a shit show.  Tons of things going on, including local bands, touring acts and festivals. So, let’s start off by pointing you to one of the shows I’m most looking forward to, Stephin Merritt of Magnetic Fields playing at Central Presbyterian Wednesday night.  He’s playing with Sam Davol, and I’m honestly not sure what the set will include, though it’s sure to be great.  Put his MF work aside and Stephin’s scored plays, written accompanying songs to young adult literature and been involved in various other projects, so he’s got a huge category to draw from…and seeing him at the church will surely be remarkable. And despite his history as a curmudgeon, I’ve always found him quite endearing, sot he intimate setting seems the perfect way to see him. Doors are at 7, and you can grab tickets HERE.  Listen to one of my favorite songs below.

Digging This New Mutual Benefit Track

jordanleeJordan Lee has been making indie pop/folk inspired music under the moniker of Mutual Benefit for some time now, so I always get a little excited when I come across a new track from this gent. This time around, we get a little bit of a change up from Lee, as the track below is the fruit of a documentary series about the process of recording music. “Not For Nothing,” is a delightfully crafted little acoustic tune that’s reminding me a little bit of Ben Kweller in its slow paced bluesy/americana style. There’s also a great deal of orchestral presence in this song as well, which will surely melt your heart. Take a listen.
