In Love with Honey Harper

A day late and a dollar short, but can’t escape the beauty of this Honey Harper tune. For one, his deep tones throughout the verses works in direct contrast to the softly strummed guitar; he soon rises the notes to meet up with the slide guitar off in the distance, leaving listeners with forlorn dreams of falling in love “when you don’t know what it is.” The more I play it, the more it just feels like home, like a place I want to belong. That alone makes it worth your listening time; look for his debut EP Universal Country on November 10th via Arbutus Records.

One Last Twain Tune

This week we’ll happily celebrate the release of the Rare Feeling, the latest LP from Twain. But, before we go that route, let us revel in one final tune; I think I’ve found this as my favorite number. It falls somewhere in the universe between Dan Bejar and Devandra, especially with the way he drops tones in and out of verses. Of course, Twain makes it all his own on the latter half of the number as his voice soars superbly. Look for the release in your local shop, or grab it from our good friends over at Keeled Scales.

Great New Single From Blurred Out

It’s always a real pleasure when a band you’ve never heard of sends you nice new song out of nowhere. Today I’m pleased to share with you this track “Meadows” from Oakland based group Blurred Out. It’s a loud, psych tinged rock song featuring some distorted guitars and a heavy rhythm section. They’ll be releasing this single with a B-side physically on November 4th. Brand New Birds of Night

The last we heard from Denton’s Birds of Night was back in 2015 when the group released their self-titled album; we actually wrote about it quite a lot. Just the other day they dropped us a line to let us know they’d recorded a brand new jam, with an accompanying video. On this number you’ll hear some of the group’s psychedelic influences, but you might also note that they’ve taken up a heavier tone…like a world where Black Rebel Motorcycle Club crashes over at the house of Queens of the Stone Age. The video takes the live performance and combines it with some of those tripped out touches apparent in their tunes. As of now, this is just a one-off number…but let’s hope this means more jams.

Brand New Salad Boys

While we were out galavanting at ACL, this Salad Boys tune quietly dropped in our laps, and regardless of who covered it then, I’m tossing it up today. Metalmania went largely unnoticed, but that mostly has to do with our own poor efforts, as it clearly was a notable release in my book. Now the New Zealand act are prepping This Is Glue, and if ever there was a modern band that encompassed the region, well, then this surely would be it; listen to the way that guitar runs in circles around your inner ear, matched by a sublime soft melody. Look for the new LP to drop on January 19th of the next year via Trouble In Mind (who else)!

 

Slow Synth Vibes from Tiger Cub

Back in 2016 Tiger Cub quietly dropped a collection of synth tunes via Bandcamp, and all we knew then was that it was the project of Bradford Gibson, one time (and possibly future) member of local act Dangeresque. Good news is that he’s quietly wrapped up another collection of songs, and now you can delight in both the song, and the playfully nostalgic accompanying video. I love the wash of the synths, turning just ever so slight to match the melody created by Gibson’s vocals. Crutch is the title of this new collection of jams, and you can find it real soon from Spooky Syrup…more details to come!

Sound On Sound Announces Rescheduled Shows

While I know we’re all still really bummed that Sound on Sound was cancelled, the folks at the fest with Margin Walker have worked really hard to rearrange the shows for you. Today they’ve put up the announcement; you can buy tickets from individual venues, or from Sound on Sound. Tickets are now on sale to folks who bought tickets to the original fest, but if you didn’t, don’t worry…you’ll get your chance Wednesday at 8 AM. I’m stoked to see the Grizzly Bear at ACL Live…but curious as to where Growl ends up?

It is ACL again. I am going sans long lens and will be actually listening to bands with Nathan and an entire squad of randoms that come in town from round this great country. Get of my blanket, football in the beer tent, occasional runs to the front of the crowd to get sweaty and be dumb – festival things. We do get Day Wave.

On to a shareable jam. Here is a lovingly crafted piece of synth pop by Empathy Test that has that darker vibe followed by that last-song-on-the-Depeche-Mode-record that had just a slightly uplifting message. The full length, Safe From Harm, is due November 17th.

The Final round from the photo pit, but first a love letter…

Hopefully, you know the feeling you get when you are on a good team, when all types of different people come together and get things done. Now, my fellow Austin music photographers weren’t shooting for the same outlet. In fact, we mostly compete for your views, but the reality is that each in the group takes care of the other. Whether it is an extra water, pepto tabs, pickle run or a spare memory card, it makes festival life awesome. Truly talented and happy to have them as colleagues and, more importantly, friends. When the Sound on Sound announcement landed, we were crushed, not just for the organizers, but also to lose that chance to just be together all doing what we love.

…and bitching about something the whole way.

Show Preview: Wand @ Barracuda (TONIGHT) 10/13

So if you’re not going to that ACL thing that’s going on in our city or attending an after show related to the fest, it’s time to make your Friday night a slam dunk. LA’s Wand are coming down to Barracuda with their psych rock in tow, and you should be there. Their latest effort,Plum, which came out last month, showed the band headed down a slightly different direction than the past, with more focus on the vocals of front man Cory Hanson and in creating more in depth song structures. The result is an excellent release, and I’m stoked to see how the band fleshes them out at Barracuda. Doors are at 9, and make sure you get there early to catch openers Darto, Hidden Ritual and The Maples. Tickets are only 15 bucks– scoop ’em here.
