Eclectic Pop from Will McKay

There’s so much to enjoy when listening to Will McKay‘s music. Walking into this track, you’re likely to feel a little nostalgic, as it has a classic rock bounce. But, McKay quickly turns the song into something more dreamy as he allows his pop sensibility to swirl during the chorus. His vocal delivery is super casual, and as it meets up with the bouncing tempo it takes on a youthfulness that makes his tune all the more endearing. You should check out his brand new self-titled EP that he just released, featuring this enchanting little ditty.

More New Music from Tunabunny

A few weeks ago we dropped the first Tunabunny single, and I promised it’d be an album of diverse sound that many would find to be one of the year’s most exhilarating listens. Today, we’re back with another tune, with that promised new twist. Slowly opening with minimal sound and a dreamy softness in the vocals, the song subdues listeners before reaching into an emphatic growl during the chorus; it soon retreats to the entrancing bit once again filled in by percussion and electronic haze. Their new album, PCP Presents Alice in Wonderland JR, is being released on June 23rd via HHBTM, and hopefully this is just another example of the group’s willingness to define their own sound.

Brand New Indiepop from Star Tropics

Not quite ready for the weekend, then all you’ll need is this delightful tune from Star Tropics. It quickly opens with twinkling jangle and a layer of fuzz beneath, and that should be enough to get your blood pumping. But, then the dreamy dosage of vocals fly atop, turning out melodies that will have your head spinning…it might just leave you bounding around your living room with a huge grin on your face (I can’t be the only one!). The group has just announced the release of their new LP, Lost World. All you pop suckers will be clamoring to get your hands on this, and it can be all yours on July 7th, courtesy of Shelflife and Fastcut Records.

Mellow Out With New Rose

As I strive to prove that modern country music goes beyond Sturgill Simpson, let me introduce you to New York based band New Rose. Their take on the genre veers in more of the slacker style with slow strummed acoustics and trippy pedal steel in the background. If my description doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, check out this new single “Waiting On Me” and make your own assessment. To me, it’s as if Destroyer started a group with Sun Volt as the backing band.

A new album entitled Morning Haze will drop on June 30th via Broken Circles (pre-order).

New Music from Withered Hand and Singer of Songs

This morning, I’d like to thank two people. Gold Flake Paint for pointing out this new release and Mike from Slumberland who brought Withered Hand to my attention. I’ve struggled to find gems the last few days, but my morning has been made with this Withered Hand & Singer of Songs putting out Among Horses I. It’s stripped down pop of the sad bastard sort with both parties taking turns fleshing out the songs of one another. I think I’m stuck on “Among Horses;” the song is pretty sparse until the guitars are upped, letting me get lost in the bliss. If you’re in love with this, be sure to pick it up from Son Canciones.

Dreamy Perfection From Hazel English

…and it is a gem. I listened to it twice.

According to the intarwebs, this is a bonus track to a 2xEP purchase featuring previously released materials and some new things. Hazel English straddles a line between too much and not enough in every little bit of the song. You want the song to be longer, the hook to stick around, echoes linger and layers peel back, but without letting go to move on and open space for the synth flourishes and guitar sweeps and all that space between, you wouldn’t be nearly as hooked at one listen. Brilliant stuff.

Order the double EP here and those of you across the pond need to see if she is playing in your town.

Mean Jolene and Pollen Rx Tour Kick Off at Hotel Vegas on Friday

Friday night, there’s only one place you really really need to be: Hotel Vegas. There’s a phenomenal show at Hotel Vegas, featuring several of the ATH Records act who are about to hit the road, namely Mean Jolene and Pollen RX. They’ll be joined by other powerhouse acts like Big Bill, Go Fever and Leather Girls (who have a rad new LP coming soon). Bands need money to hit the road, so come get yourself a cool t-shirt or an LP, then stay for the ridiculously solid line up of Austin acts. Stream some releases from the bands that I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of with ATH Records.

More From Blue Of Noon

Having recently changed their name from Permanent Vacation to Blue of Noon, Chris McComas & Joel Blanken have been pumping out some hits this spring. We’ve already been treated to lead single “Guidance”, and now the boys just sent over this new track “Nightmare”. If you’re out there looking for the best in the dream pop genre, this is surely it. I’m finding it hard to not hit play over and over again.

Stay tuned as we hear more about upcoming releases.

Meet Vertical Vice

Austin’s Vertical Vice is sure to perk up your ears, as members of the new project have played in such heavy hitters as OBN IIIs, Jonly Bonly, Bad Sports…and just about every rad rock act in town. They’re heading out on a short Midwest jaunt through Dallas, Kansas City, Tulsa…and an Austin date at Cheer Up Charlies on Sunday night. We have our first listen today to the band’s Promotion Tape, with the lead single illustrating a nod to acts like Dead Kennedy’s, but with a more artful delivery. I love Jason Smith’s vocals as he seems to casually deliver the line “do it again do it again do it again” while Orville rolls pounding drums through your speakers and the guitars stutter step to the finale. Come out to CUC on Sunday to get your hand on the tape…but if you’re not in Austin, pick up the Promotion via bandcamp right HERE.

Stream New EP from Debate Club

Debate Club has been on my radar for a bit now, as I closely follow their label, Beko Disques, who do a great job of discovering gems abroad I probably wouldn’t ever hear about. The band release the Fish Fry EP today, and it’s a noisy number of heavy pop songs that will surely find room in your listening rotation this week (and beyond). Fans of new psych stylings will find that the darkened style of the group is entrancing on its own, though be warned of the slight pop sensibility that becomes apparent the more you listen to the EP. Standout track “Depeche” is one of my favorite tracks of the month thus far, especially as the vocals are stretched and the rhythm section pounds in your ears. Go grab the EP today!
