New Video and Song from The New Year

In just a few weeks we can all celebrate the glorious return of The New Year. This brand new track perfectly illustrates what’s made me fawn over the band for quite some time; it begins slowly, almost ominously. However, just beneath the front of the mix is this softer guitar tapestry, building slowly as percussion grows into the track. Vocals won’t even come in until the last minute or so of the tune, but the execution of the song and its accompanying video are sure to grab your attention. There’s such care placed on this song, that’s its no wonder everyone is anxiously awaiting the release of Snow; look for it on April 28th via Undertow Music.

Another Hit from Nana Grizol

I’m in love with Nana Grizol‘s latest album; there’s an underlying earnestness that carries the album on, joined by clever lyricism that might go overlooked by the masses. But, those of you longing for the purity of indie rock that gave birth to blogs in the early 00s will surely find the band’s work, such as this number, intoxicating. There’s no bells and whistles (though there are some horns), but rather a simplistic approach built around songwriting and innate accessibility for every listener. I’m already saving a spot for Ursa Minor in my year end list, and you’ll do the same if you’re looking to get carried away in music once again; album out now via Orange Twin.

Fresh Music from Romantic States

Romantic States caught my attention with their self-titled debut for DZ Tapes, and followed it up with an incredible 7″. Now, looks like we’re finally getting another full-length from the band. The band’s approach on their first singer seems to be that summery jangling indiepop, featuring a steady melodic croon operating during the various verses. But, when the chorus slides in there’s a nice jangle, and the tune later breaks down with a little bit of distortion to add some punch. Gentle Reminder Records will be releasing the group’s Corduroy in Italy on May 12th, hopefully bring a fresh batch of endearing tunes.

More Music from So Many Wizards

So Many Wizards are one of those bands that you should love, but you might accidentally skip, so I’m beggin you not to do that. They’re brandishing spirited pop music, fueled by infectious harmonizing and driving rhythms; it sounds like a the sort of stuff you’d hear off of Slumberland Records. Try to not tap your toes as the drums bounce and the delivery of vocals comes quick through your speakers…so quick in fact that it almost loses control. Their latest effort, Heavy Vision, is set to be released by Lolipop Records on April 14th.

Stream Vincent Kircher’s Solo Debut

I’m a huge fan of Jaill, so when I heard that leader Vincent Kircher was heading out on his own, I was practically salivating with anticipation. You’ll definitely hear some similarities to his other project, but just imagine Kircher messing with the structure and slowing things down. Take album opener “Dreams from a Laundromat,” filled with playful island percussion and Kircher’s calmed delivery; you can imagine this being ramped up with heavier percussion, trading the island vibe with jangling guitars. I guess it goes to show that Vincent’s always had a penchant for great pop songwriting. Stream his brand new Am I Ghost LP below, and appreciate that some writers are always honing their craft.

James Leonard Hewitson Eschews Cool

There’s something in this new single from James Leonard Hewitson that recalls the sultry stylings of Jeremy Jay. It’s pop music, but not the overproduced sort, settling into a consistent bit of dreamy pop…fitting as this new single is titled “Dream Person.” A slightly heavier/darker tone crashes into the song’s middle, but fades away back into the soothing core of the song that revolves around Hewitson’s voice…though joined by a female counterpart on the track’s latter half. I love the way he’s just casually bringing out songs slowly, testing the waters of his craft. Cheers to you sir.

New White Bronco Tune on Slack Capital 2

Slack Capital 2 is a compilation of music by 27 of the greatest bands in Austin. All proceeds from the comp go to SafePlace, which provides support for victims of domestic and sexual violence. We’re unveiling one song per day until the the release party on April 14.

Song of the day: White Bronco — “Soul Stroll”

Although they’ve sadly been defunct for a little while now, White Bronco have pulled out an unreleased gem for Slack Capital 2. Featuring a Beatles-evoking and very hummable chord structure over a driving snare and pealing guitars, “Soul Stroll” pays tribute to the rebellious power of taking a walk, of getting far from the madding crowd. The opening lyrics, “Outside/ With my spaceship,” set the tone of a person apart, a weirdo looking in. Like a punk Bruce Springsteen, complete with plenty of yelps, power is asserted through the fine art of breaking free and getting loose. A chaotic ending puts you in the middle of a boisterous happy crowd in a sweaty room, and you can’t help but think “Come back, White Bronco!” — Eric Braden

Hear Tamarron’s Contribution to Slack Capital 2

Slack Capital 2 is a compilation of music by 27 of the greatest bands in Austin. All proceeds from the comp go to SafePlace, which provides support for victims of domestic and sexual violence. We’re unveiling one song per day until the the release party on April 14.

Song of the day: Tamarron — “Dr. Alan”

Tamarron is one of those bands where half the fun is watching how much fun the band is having. In other words, these dudes like each other, and that camaraderie is impossible to fake. It makes you want to be part of the gang, to be in on the jokes. Their contribution to Slack Capital 2, “Dr. Alan,” is, fittingly, an endlessly melodic soft-rock jam, complete with background “ooh la la la’s” and serpentine, in-no-hurry guitar solos. The interesting thing is, for such a laid-back song, it’s really hard to pinpoint exactly what it’s about. Is it a drug song, alluding to The Beatles’ “Dr. Robert”? You start to think that its obscurity might be the point when you parse a lyric like “You’ll never understand me/ And when you do/ It’s hard to believe.” Perhaps Tamarron will forever be a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an acid blotter. But that’s the fun of it. — Eric Braden

Listen to Schwein! on Slack Capital 2

Slack Capital 2 is a compilation of music by 27 of the greatest bands in Austin. All proceeds from the comp go to SafePlace, which provides support for victims of domestic and sexual violence. We’re unveiling one song per day until the the release party on April 14.

Song of the day: Schwein! — “Atma”

Schwein! is the musical moniker of Matt Schweinberg, who plays guitar in Annabelle Chairlegs and runs a home studio here in town (he recorded the glistening “Gold Driver,” by The Diamond Center–another band he plays in–on this very compilation). Given his association with those two bands, the classic rock throwback vibes in “Atma” make perfect sense. The happy surprise here is the song’s pure joy involved– the irrepressible good feeling of devotion. Just wait for those drums to kick in, about a minute into the song. I don’t care who you are, if that moment doesn’t cause you to open the windows and start grooving, you’re probably dead. Add to that a heavy George Harrison vibe (those slide guitars!) and a spiritual bent (Schweinberg told me “atma” means “spiritual friend”), and you have a song whose warmth is a perfect companion to the blossoming of Spring. Here we have a song that makes you want to bop your head and take a deep breath of fresh air in equal measure. –Eric Braden
