New Sloan Peterson Tune

While we usually give Melbourne a lot of focus here, we’ll be turning to Sydney where we find songwriter Sloan Peterson offering up some solid indie rock. Listening to this track, you can see Sloan fitting in with the styles present in a lot of current US contemporaries, bringing in these faintly hazy vocals to push the semi-psych pulse of the tune. I love that there’s not tricks, just a simple straight aheads blast of enjoyable pop music. She’s in the process of finishing up touches on her self-titled EP, which is set to be everywhere later on in the summer.

Enjoying This New Imaginary People

There’s something ultimately familiar about the new Imaginary People single; it’s something that perked my ears, thus encouraging me to share. Perhaps it’s the slight quiver in the vocal delivery or the hi-hat work from the percussion, but it all reminds me an awful lot of early Wolf Parade. I also appreciate that the band are employing all sorts of instrumentation to flesh out this tune, which illustrates a bit of daring in the recording process as they leap for the pop fences. Look for the release of October Alice from the band on April 28th via Five Five Diamonds.

New To You: Groovy Indie Pop From Melby

This track may be a week old, but that doesn’t mean it’s getting any less fresh. Melby are a Stockholm psych pop group that should be on your radar– this new single, “Cross” that they just put out proves that. The group will be releasing their debut EP on Rama Lama Records soon and if it’s anything like the song below, it will be filled with psych-twingedguitar riffs, gorgeously smooth vocals, and bouncy percussion to make you shake it. Vocally, I’m reminded a bit of Wye Oak‘s Jenn Wasner, but the guitar has a bit of a bite to it that makes me think about the work of St. Vincent. The song finishes nicely with a touch of synthesizer which adds some psych flair to to the tune. Take a listen below and keep an ear to the ground for more from the group.

Melodic Pop Number From Minor Poet

Andrew Carter has spent the last couple of monthswholed up in his basement writing, recording, and playing every instrument for his new project called Minor Poet. Andrew begins to share samples of his hard work today with this fancy new song “Plot Devices”. The track certainly has a Pet Sounds vibe to it with the swirling vocals and bright drums dropping in from time to time in the background. This track serves as a preview of more to come in an album being released later this year. We’ll keep ya posted.

Greg Ulhmann Comes to Mohawk with New Video (3/29)

Greg Ulhmann is heading out of his home base of Los Angeles to travel the States and play some shows for you all. He’s fresh off the release of his latest LP, Odd Job, and he’s letting us run this brand new video for you to enjoy. It’s a delicate track, illustrating the careful approach to pop songwriting that Greg’s taken. The notes, both from guitar and voice delicately seep through your speakers, entrancing the listener, much as we expect from his live performance at the Mohawk on Wednesday night. Speaking of that night, he’ll be joined by several of our local favorites, Jacob Metcalf, Daphne and Zula Montez; be sure to come out for a special night of tunes.

Enthusiastic Rocker from Keeper Keeper

While we’re anticipating storms the next few days, the weather’s been rather nice here in Austin. What that means for me is that you’ve got to roll down the windows and turn the stereo up…particularly if you’ve got this Keeper Keeper tune on blast. It reminds me a great deal of the upbeat numbers offered by Rural Alberta Advantage, owing debts to folk influences and punk rock in the same breath. There’s just something lively and natural here, and I can’t pull myself away. The band are set to release their new album, Paradigm, on April 21st.

Yesterday’s News: Another New Moon Duo Single

I love the ever-changing progress of Moon Duo. While they still adhere to some of their early psychedelic influences, such as the driving synth work here, they continue to move and change within those confines. Here, they offer up this smoky vocal that rests atop the pulsing musical accompaniment; it has this smoothed out production that’s reminiscent of classic 90s dream pop. Oh! The track manages to keep your attention, in spite of its length, which hopefully doesn’t scare away the looky-loos. Their newest release Occult Architecture Vol. 2 will be released by their long-time label, Sacred Bones Records, on May 5th.

Simian Ghost Share A Clever Video

One of the lovely things I saw during SxSW was the very charming set by Simian Ghost. The Swedes are not huge fans of the current political climate in these United States. Case in point, they would randomly change a lyric in a song to “Impeach the Clown” during their sets at SxSW.

Aside from having a clever video, “Stop Moving” is a sparkling example of why Swedish pop sensibilities need to permeate all corners of the globe. Their sound is more organic these days, in fact this track is downright disco in nature, as they have picked up the guitars in favor of the pure synths that dominated earlier recordings. There is a new record coming soon via Heist or Hit, but until then…

New Good Field on Slack Capital 2

Slack Capital 2 is a compilation of music by 27 of the greatest bands in Austin. All proceeds from the comp go to SafePlace, which provides support for victims of domestic and sexual violence. To keep things exciting, we’re unveiling one song per day.

Song of the day: Good Field – “Necessary Feeling”

Good Field is a soulful, gritty indie pop band with chops for days, and their hook laden songs demand repeat listens. “Necessary Feeling” has the band in high spirits, buoyed by a glistening guitar riff that evokes not only the salt of an ocean breeze, but also the memory of an ocean breeze. There are plenty of guitars here, guitars that chop and guitars that peal, adding an AM gold fuzz to an otherwise neatly constructed pop-rock song. At one point in “Necessary Feeling” the song stops, a fake out, as singer Paul Price moans, “Hold my head”– a brief hangover– but after a few beats a crisp drum fill brings us back into the groove immediately. Later, the song roams into an extended freaky jam, but the dreamy existentialist core of this upbeat tune never quite leaves your line of sight. There is an over-caffeinated urgency and eagerness to “Necessary Feeling” that seems to say something like “Life is a lot, but life is good.” – Eric Braden
