New to Me: The Crystal Furs

crystalfursWhile all my Internet friends were raving about the amazing time they had at NYC Popfest (still jealous) they also tossed me a nod towards The Crystal Furs…a Ft. Worth based indiepop act. They’re fairly new to the scene, and seeing as our love of indiepop is always going strong, I’m really stoked to have another band to fawn over, let alone one from Texas. They recently tossed out an EP titled the Pentacon Sessions, recorded while the band was still working on their sound and name. I figured music world is slow today, so why not share it with you all today. Stream below, and look for more from The Crystal Furs.

There’s a New Cass McCombs Album Coming

CassMcCombs_MangyLove_CoverArt-copyThere are a ton of acts that get loads of press, and I’m not always on board with the buzz (I know, I liked the first album better…blah blah blah). But, I’ve really enjoyed the work of Cass McCombs, so with the announcement of a new album, I’m actually really excited. I enjoy the way the track opens with McCombs calming croon coming in over the strings and ringing guitar chord that’s high in the mix. There’s even a little bit of a touch that seemingly makes it perfect pop for lounge acts…and I mean that in the best way possible. His new effort will be titled Mangy Love, coming out later via Anti Records.

Rock Out with New Mumblr

mumblr-4Mumblr have worked hard on their latest album to really pull away from the tried and true sound of emo-punk that’s helped them gain some popularity. Interestingly enough, I think this is the tightest the band has sounded, not to mention the most enthused they’ve sounded. This new single from The Never Ending Get Down does still look back nostalgically, but less into the poppier side of things and more into the area where Jawbreaker pulled up the pop stoplight. Chords ring, cymbals crash, and you’re hooked on everything that’s great…which is pretty much this whole tune. Look for their new album via Fleeting Youth Records on June 10th.

Mimes of Wine Release New Single

mimesMimes of Wine has primarily been the work of Italian-born Laura Loriga, though the last few years she’s been steadied by a strong backing band, which definitely elevates the song on her newest work. The track starts off with little more than piano and Loriga, which we can assume is the demo process, but the procession continues, throwing in carefully accented strings. There’s some deep tones in the strings, which work great to provide a balance with Laura’s lofty vocals. Let’s hope they’re as strong on the entirety of their new album, La Maison Verte, as they are in this track; look for the LP on June 10th via Accidental Muzik.

Watch the New Omni Video

Another week, another great song being released by Trouble in Mind Records, but this time the band is Omni. They’ve got a new album titled Deluxe coming out in July on the label, and I think it’s one one of those really special musical pieces…at least for those of that grew up listening to a lot of punk. It seems to take all the genres of punk, and the after-punk years (glam, no wave, post, proto) and combine them to create an amalgam of great sounds. Watch their video for the new track below, and be ready for the official release come July 8th.

New (Old) Music from Jons

jonsThis is a great Monday track. You’re sitting there, looking back on the weekend, wondering how you got kicked into the working week so quickly, wishing for a bit of respite. So take on this Jons track, a sprawling bit of a ballad, coated in haunting vocal effects. But, my favorite reason for believing in the track comes right after the first 1.40 minute mark; up until then the track was mildly subdued, but just a slight pick up in spirit changes your outlook/emotions. You’ve got something to live for, something to long for…and the secret lives within this song. Solitaire Recordings will behelping the band out in the future, so keep your eyes peeled.

New Music from Family Video and Sparkle Water

splittapeOne of my favorite little labels is Lost Sound Tapes, as I’ve mentioned before, but I was getting worried as they’d been quiet the last few months. But, sweat no more, as the label is releasing a split tape between Family Video and Sparkle Water (both Canadian). The Sparkle Water side seems to hold a groovier, slightly louder sound, working between lo-fi and noise rock. Family Video (at least on the single) gets to play the innocent foil, bringing in a softer piece to balance out the feel of the tape. Can’t tell you which I love more, but you can make up your own mind and grab the tape on June 3rd.

Another Great Track from Psychic Ills

psychicFor some reason I hadn’t realized until today how much I was looking forward to listening to the new album from Psychic Ills. While they still adhere to some of the psychedelic vibes, their new effort has this sprawling country vibe to it. The edges are slightly darkened, longing, settling the listener into a vibe of contemplation as the song unfolds…slide guitar and all. The group will release Inner Journey Out on June 3rd via Sacred Bones Records, and you can bet I’ll be in line waiting to pick it up.

More Music from Mourn

mournPromising young Spanish act Mourn seem to have their legal issues all figured out, so they’re going full force pushing ahead with the promotion of their new album, Ha Ha He, which is out in just a couple of weeks (June 3rd). Their latest track seems to have a dark post-punk feel to it, filled with discordant chords and a propulsive movement that pushes the track ahead. I continue to be impressed by the group’s youth, as if that matters, but their craftsmanship rivals that of their peers, who are often years older. Look for the new LP via Captured Tracks.
