New Music from Psychic Ills

pyschicillsI like when bands quietly release tracks, knowing that the strength of the song will draw people in to their work…which happens to be the case with this new Psychic Ills tune. Listening to it, it feels like the band have sort of taken on the Spiritualized approach, turning from one sound into the darkened R&B/soul influenced folk outfit. This tune really has the feeling of Western expansion, gradually letting the song flow through your speakers. Sacred Bones Records will be releasing Inner Journey Out on June 3rd, and it looks to be one of those records you quietly enjoy, then buy copies for your friends.

Omni Announce Album

12771533_1562000567425520_4341617722041657471_oThere have been whispers of Omni signing to Trouble in Mind Records, and man, this one lives up to all my expectations. It’s definitely not your run-of-the-mill tune, hitting hard instantly, frenetically blasting through in less than two minutes. It sounds old-school, but in that, it also sounds refreshing, not being weighed down by any of the modern textures. This is pure angular punk of the pop sort, the type that excites anyone listening. Deluxe will be out on July 8th, so be ready for something really exciting.

Indiepop from Tangible Excitement

erIf you didn’t get your hands on the Gunnels/Tangible Excitement album that came out via Emotional Response then you’re surely missing out on something great. But, that’s neither here nor there, as Tangible Excitement (Boyracer/Lucksmiths) are back with a brand new track…though rumor has it that this isn’t the final version (expect more noise). For my two cents, I think this one succeeds without the noise; there’s a moment just before the 1.5 minute mark that really got me. The melody is spot on, with just enough twinkling from the guitars to catch the listener. You’ll hear this song on a new 2 song flexidisc that’s slated for later this year via Freakscene.

Check the Latest from The Echocentrics

echoAdrian Quesada has pretty much combined a who’s who of Austin and part-time Austin greats to comprise his latest work as the Echocentrics. Yesterday, as I hope you heard, they unleashed one of the tracks that features Bill Callahan, who we haven’t heard from since about 2014. There’s something about his voice that’s always hit home with me; it’s somewhat forlorn, yet familiar and deep…maybe it’s how I want my voice to be. Anyways, once the production jumps in, the song takes off completely, adding a spirit not always associated with Bill. I particularly enjoy the little guitar part that dances between the 54 second and 1.14 second marks. Echo Hotel is the next project slated for release from the group; it hits on May 20th via Nacional.

Pop from Del Sur

delsurI’ve written about the work of Michael Collier before, who works under the moniker of Del Sur, and it’s time to share another gem for you all. It’s a piece that circles around the quieted strumming, adding in layers of light percussion along with a bit of an atmospheric wash. Then, another guitar enters to work against the strumming, creating this beautiful piece of pop that floats inescapably through the caverns of your mind. His Eating in Bed mini-album will be released by Rough Beast Records on April 29th.

Jam This Martha Tune! Jam It Loud!

marthaDo you wanna feel young? You wanna feel like you’re alive again? Then run to your stereo, get this Martha song on it, and turn it up really loud. It’s a blasting bit of pop-punk that’s as infectious as it is memorable. The riffs are huge, the drums catch and there’s gang harmonies blasting in and out of the song. I get the feeling that these guys are all substance and none of the bullshit posturing. Sounds like they’re all just having fun, and if you listen closely, then you just might do the same. Look for their album, Blisters in the Pit of My Heart to come out on July 8th via Dirtnap/Fortuna Pop.

Even More Music from Jeff Runnings (For Against)

jeffrunningsYou get the feeling that everyone who listens to Primitives and Smalls will be duly rewarded for their anticipation, as each new single seems to bring in another musical layer from Jeff Runnings that we adore. On the latest single, the music seems almost as important, or more important than the vocals. Lurking beneath the mix are all these textural touches setting the soundscape for your ears as the voice drifts in between the walls of synth work. I also appreciate the restraint, holding the song in one beautiful space for nearly five minutes. Look for the LP via Saint Marie Records on May 6th.

Experimental Pop from Pikelet

pikeletPikelet is a project that has put a stamp on Melbourne’s music scene, and it’s important to note that its very existence provides a look into the scene, demonstrating that it’s more than just a home for incredible guitar pop. Evelyn Morris and her group return with Tronc, an eight song piece that promises the weirder side of pop. While musically you can see the affiliation to acts such as The Blow, that really just revolves around Morris’ voice. The construction seems to be a hodgepodge of understated beats and electronic tinkering, creating more of an artful approach to the genre. Look for this song and seven others when it’s released by Chapter Music on May 6th.

New Music from Evans the Death

12971008_10153792903639213_2035876018708318021_oIt’s been a little over a year since we last heard from Evans the Death with Expect Delays, but I’m excited by the new noise the band’s brandishing with their latest single. The song takes a moment to build before blasting with that angular dance of noise and pummeling drums. Soon the vocals crash in, holding the song ransom, as if the band’s about to spin aimlessly out of control. Somehow they pull it all in, tightening the sound just enough to keep it altogether. We end up with the perfect blend pop and noise, making me all the more excited to hear their new album, Vanilla; it’s slated for release in June via Fortuna Pop.

New Music from 50 Foot Wave

50fotowaveOut of the ashes of Throwing Muses came 50 Foot Wave, and they’ve been blasting rock n’ roll since 2003. It’s interesting to hear Kristin Hersh amidst the current climate, especially since her voice and style has definitely influenced the work of a lot of current female artists, whether they’re aware of it or not. This track opens fairly casually, just Hersh and a maneuvering guitar, waiting for the rhythm section to join her. Soon after the 30 second mark the band picks up the energy, giving heavier riffs while Hersh’s powerful vocal performance dominates your speakers. I appreciate the fact that the surface level of this track seems so simple, yet beneath it lurks varying changes in structures and time; it should make for a powerfulalbum worth of tunes; look for Bath White on may 27th via HHBTM Records.
