Just when I thought they could do no better, Urban Oufitters goes and proves me wrong with their solid new edition of their LSTN sampler. This time you’ll get a whopping 25 tracks all available for download on itunes or fully streamable on the website. Highlights include tunes from The Dirty Projectors, Small Black, The Walkmen, and many many more. Check it out.
Seems like forever since we’ve run a proper From the Closet, so what better way to start things back up than with a little coverage of one of our favorites, T. Rex. You can get a piece of the band’s collection brand new starting October 26th, as Fat Possum is re-issuing the catalogue, one LP at a time, beginning with The Slider.
Pujol is an up-and-coming band out of Nashville, and they’ve already received lots of praise all over the Interwebs. Their sound uses a bit of that garage recording, which apparently is the technique of the year, at least for me. But, they include a lot of melodies, likely to make you bounce about your room jubilantly. They’ve just released their EP, All at the Same Time, and though its short, its got quite a punch. Give this track a try to see if this is your bag.[audio:http://austintownhall.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/02-Butterflyknife.mp3]

Our artist to watch really shouldn’t really be an artist to watch, rather a must see artist. Lucero aren’t a new band, in fact, they have six albums to their name, all full of songs we know you’ll enjoy. They blend a nice bit of country twang with a punk rock ethos, giving them credibility galore in my book. Singer Ben Nichols has a throaty vocal, often times seeming like he’s struggling to get his voice out, but that’s just the sort of passion he brings to the table. Their latest album, 1372 Overton Park, featured some new moves, bringing in loads more horns, and you’re sure to get a glimpse of the more than just a four-piece band on stage, as they definitely will be bringing an entourage to bring the house down. I can see this as one of those shows that unifies the unkempt rockers with the casual ACL festival goers; the band is simply good enough to bring us all together, especially in the live setting. So, if you like a little bit of punk rock, you have to be there. Country is your thing? Still, you gotta be there. We’re all going to throw back a few nice beverages, and fall in love with Lucero.[audio:http://austintownhall.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/11-Hey-Darling-Do-You-Gamble_-1.mp3]

The Parish played host to Film School’s fifth stop on their tour in support of the album Fission. Austin’s TV Torso and Monahans were brought in to open. I was looking forward to this line up as a good match to the excellent sound and lighting at this venue. Follow the jump for more and fancy photos.
The Drums album, released earlier this year, had been on my radar for quite some time. It used jangling surf-guitars, smooth rhythms, and a pretty killer vocal to win me over pretty quickly. I was excited, to say the least, to see the band on their return venture to Austin, but something was amiss last night. This might just be hearsay, and one man’s opinion, but I almost left early due to the fact that I can’t guarantee, nor do I want to, that the band actually performed live.
