Jamming This Pre Nup

prenupFeel like there’s been slim picking in great songs lately, which is why I’m glad I stumbled upon this new-ish track from Pre Nup. It’s one of the song’s featured on the band’s forthcoming 7″ for Debt Offensive/Kingfisher Bluez, and you’ll definitely have to play it a couple of dozen times today. There’s definitely a lo-fi aspect, but it walks a fine line between jangling pop and scuzzy garage rock, which is a perfect combination for my joy. Look for this 4 song 7″ to hit in May of this year.

Big Bill 7″ Stream + Release Party (2.28)

billyThere’s been great coverage this week for Austin’s Big Bill…local blog Ovrld and national mag, The Big Takeover added to the band’s recent press run. It’s deserved on so many levels, not only just musically, but in its representation of what truly makes Austin “weird.” Our label is releasing the 7″ today, and it will come with a special prize for those of you that order it HERE (it’s like a musical Cracker Jacks!), but you should also come out to End of an Ear on Sunday evening before the Oscars to enjoy a great set celebrating the band’s release. They’ll go on at 5 PM, and we’ll have the 7″ on hand for you to grab. Trust me, this is going to be a great year for all things Bill…so get a head start with this 7″.

ATX Spotlight: Benjamin Cissner Readying Album

12241698_907663649310191_6124699712053618704_nAttention Austin (and beyond)! Benajamin Cissner needs your help. He needs you to listen to his music. Well, he doesn’t need it necessarily, but you do! You really really do. All those of you in love with introspective singer-songwriters will not find anything better this year. Think of artists like sad Beck or Eels, but with a more poetic lyricist (at least in comparison to Beck). This song has a little bit of spirit to it, more upbeat than some of the other tracks you’ll hear on his debut Birds in the Night. This is just one of those albums that I feel comes across once in a lifetime, and it’s been created right here in Austin. Benjamin will be releasing his debut next Friday, March 4th, celebrating the beautiful vinyl release over at Barracuda. Stream the tune below. Press photo by Richard Casteel.

Listen to Geddy D featuring Darius Minwalla of the Posies

geddydI hadn’t really heard of Geddy D, whois perhaps better known as Head Like a Kite, but I was struck by this song. Not only the story of Geddy digging through crates to find a recording he did with his deceased friend, Darius, but just the emotional pull that hits from the beginning. It reminds me a lot of Nada Surf in their mellower moments, pulling at your heart with really powerful chords and great melody. He’s releasing the track today to honor his friend, with proceeds going tothe Boise charity, Rock on Wheels. Enjoy, and donate.

Stream Relick’s Twin House EP

relickRelick‘s been making waves here in Texas for the past few years, and you can now stream their great new Twin House EP! These six tracks definitely have a central musical theme, taking on touches of the world left behind by Rilo Kiley, but I also think that singer Amber Nicholson has a tendency to sound a little bit like Neko Case…which is never bad in my book. A lot of the tracks have that indie rock influenced Americana approach, but I love how they throw “Sun” into the mix to change things up and provide some musical differentiation. They’re self-releasing their Twin House EP next week, so stream it while you can!

Brand New Bloody Knives!

bloodyI’ve been following Bloody Knives pretty closely the last several years. The band play an abrasive version of modern dream pop/shoegaze, filling in their tracks with buzzing guitars and a warmth in the vocals that somehow manages to steady the ship for listeners. Their latest effort, I Will Cut Your Heart Out for This, already has an ominous attitude, and the single below fulfills that darkened omen with shrieking walls of guitars. But, perhaps the reason I’ve come to respect the band is that they manage to juxtapose that darkness with a gentle beauty, be it in central melodies or the vocals…it never disappoints. There aren’t too many, if any, acts around pulling this off…this well. Look for the LP on April 15th via Saint Marie Records.

Fresh Track from The Goon Sax

goonsAfter the exceptional “Boyfriend” single, my expectations for the Goon Sax debut album were riding super high. Their new single takes on a slightly different stroke, but it’s keeping it’s lofty aim. There’s a slower pace hanging out in this song, similar to other Australian artists who’ve been unfairly titled dole-wave. What’s most astonishing is how polished and perfect these tracks are, and the band themselves aren’t even in their twenties. This IS the next great Australian band, I promise you that. Look for Up to Anything on March 11th via the ever-reliable Chapter Music.

Risley Tune

risleyRisley is the project of Portland’sMichael Deresh and TravisStank, who recorded 138 songs with the help of many friends in the process of trying to make a single album over the past four years. One of the results is below with “Kill The Clock,” which is a little under three minutes of garage meets streamlined rock. There’s this great, ripping, guitar riff that opens up the track and comes back in through the mix that screams rock, while the vocals are a bit hazy and distorted, reminding you of your favorite garage band. The song is a nice bit of well crafted energy, not just ending abruptly, butwinding its way down to a close. Take a listen and look out for their self titled LP,which is out today!

Punchy Pop from Culture Abuse

cultureDidn’t want to dwell too much on the softer, ethereal side of the musical world today, so wanted to make sure my last contribution was a good little bit of pop rock…courtesy of Culture Abuse. The San Fran band is preparing to release their debut album, Peach, and this should definitely give those in the garage rock circle something to be excited about; it packs a punch while filling your ears with some hooks. Look for the record on April 6th via 6131 Records.
