Quiet Company CD Release @ Mohawk (3/6)

3-6-09_cdrelease_poster-01-01Another local band worthy of your attention, Quiet Company, will be celebrating the release of their new LP Everyone You Love Will be Happy Soon at The Mohawk Friday evening.  Joining the band for the the show are two other up and coming Austin acts Jets Under Fire & The Rocket Boys.  Doors for this show open up at 9pm.  As a bonus, Juno Award nominated band Plants and Animals will be playing the inside stage after Quiet Company wrap things up outside.

SXSW Watchlist: Kevin Devine

kdevineLong ago Kevin Devine was just your average singer/songwriter, coasting along on the coattails of pop-punk, although it was clearly that he never really fit in musically. His early shows were intimate affairs, as witnessed by last year’s performance at SXSW where the entire audience sat down to watch him intricately pick at his guitar. Still, there’s plenty of passion in his voice.

Kevin has a knack for writing careful lyrics combined with his innate understanding of melodies. He matches it all with his fervor and personality, as his stage banter makes it easy to fall in love with the man singing on stage. This year, he’ll be bringing his God Damn Band in tow to fill out the sounds for his upcoming release Brother’s Blood.

He’ll be playing at the Radio Room Patio on Wednesday, March 18th at 11:oo PM.

Cut Copy @ Stubbs (3/6)

cutcopy_071206124221687_wideweb__300x279Stubb’s has a nice bill Friday night featuring Aussie act Cut Copy and one of the happiest bands around Matt & Kim.  Tickets are currently on sale for this event from Front Gate Tickets for $20.  Doors open up at 7pm and music should start around 8 with a set by DJ Knightlife.  As if that wasn’t enough, Austin dance band L.A.X. will be playing the inside stage of Stubb’s as soon as things wrap up outside.  Entry to the after show is totally free if you hang on to your wristbands from the Cut Copy show.

Kool Keith @ Mohawk (3/5)

030509_mohawk_koolkeith0Kool Keith (also known as Dr. Dooom, Dr. Octagon, or Black Elvis) is returning to Austin after his sick performance at Fun Fest in November.  This time around, Mr. Thornton will be playing at The Mohawk on Thursday with tickets going for $11.  Doors for this sure to be rowdy hip-hop show open at 8pm.

Modest Mouse @ Stubbs (3/4)

modest-mouse-band-photoIt’s hard to believe that Modest Mouse are still going strong after all these years and yes we are still excited about them coming to our little town.  You can catch this now veteran act on Wednesday at Stubbs along with opening bands Mimicking Birds & Japanese Motors.  Doors for this show are at 7pm.  Tickets have been sold out for quite some time now and are selling for way more than what they are worth on Ebay.  Try a scalper?

SXSW Watchlist: Telekinesis

telekinesisMichael Benjamin Lerner records under the moniker of Telekinesis, and he’s the most recent signing to indie stalwart Merge Records. His self-titled album is set to come out on April 7th, and its precisely the sort of album one would want with a Spring release; its full of warmth, yet filled with memorable pop moments.

His whole sound is difficult to put down on paper, as there seem to be many underlying elements. At some moments, he sounds like the more mature brother of young Ben Kweller, when Ben was geared towards the poppier side of life. Still, you might find some resemblance to Brendan Benson‘s solo works here, as fuzzed out guitar is mixed with precision drumming.  Even more interesting is a song like “Foreign Room,” which recalls Elliott Smith moments before picking up pace, all done to perfection. Mark my words, Telekinesis should be on your radar, and not just for SXSW.

He will be playing at The Parish on Saturday, March 21st at 8 PM.

Delta Spirit @ Emo’s Show Review

Saturday night was probably not the most enjoyable evening on which to catch a show, as it was freezing cold here in Austin, but many brave souls opted to push through the wintry weather in pursuit of a good evening of music.  Those in attendance were able to catch Dawes, Other Lives and Delta Spirit honing their skills on stage. Here are our thoughts on the evening.

Diagonals LP Release Party (2/28)

vinyl_posterThe nice folks at do512 and Vinyl Entertainment are offering you another show this weekend with free drinkage to be had.  This time around the celebration is for the release of new LP Valley of the Cyclops by local act Diagonals.  Other local artists The Ugly Beats and DJ Brian Tweedy will also be getting in on the fun.  The show is going down at the 501 studios (map here) downtown and starts around midnight.  RSVP to the show now to guarantee entry and get yourself some free Lonestar!

lenny1 We’ll go a little old school crooner this week, well, not that entirely old school, as the feature of this week is still up and at it.  Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you Leonard Cohen. The man has been honored by everyone, and this Friday we have a chance to honor the man  as well.  You can do so by purchasing tickets to his show on April 2nd at the Long Center.
