Matt Pryor, formerly of The Get Up Kids & The New Amsterdams, will be showing his face at Stubbs in Austin on Saturday for 2 different events. Later in the evening, Matt will play a solo set with doors at 9pm and tickets only costing you $12.00. The Melvins In Austin (8/22)

Two Melvins events going down on Friday we’d like to tell you about. First, the longtime rockers will be signing whatever your little heart desires at Waterloo Records around 5pm. The Waterloo website says no live music, only a signing. Shortly after the signing wraps up, The Melvins will break out the guitars and amps for the people at Emo’s Austin. Doors for the event are set for 9pm with opening act Big Business kicking the music off at 10pm. Tickets for the show are only $13 and can be had here.

The Cool Kids @ Emo’s (8/20)

The latest craze in the indie hip-hop world, The Cool Kids, will be bringing their brand of jams to the outside stage of Emo’s Austin on Wednesday evening. Tickets for the event are a mere $12 with doors at 9pm and music kicked off at 10 with a DJ set by local legend DJ Mel. You can get your tickets in advance from ticketweb. Preview the show below with a song that is sure to drop into your dance party mixes “A Little Bit Cooler”.

Gospel Gossip @ Headhunters – 8/20

Sure there is lots going on these days, and Wednesday is packed of goodness, but my recommendation is to head on over to Headhunters for a surprise you’re sure to enjoy. I’ve been listening to Gospel Gossip‘s latest record kind of non-stop with its blend of shoegaze and pop. It’s like Dirty on Purpose, but with a female vocalist. Like I said, head somewhere unexpected and take it all in.

James Jackson @ Mohawk (8/19)

James Jackson Toth will be playing a set with one of our favorite new bands The Dutchess & The Duke (read our review of their recent album here) at Mohawk on Tuesday evening. Things are set to kick off at 9pm with tickets sold only at the door. Read more about the show on the Transmission Entertainment website. You can also listen to “Doreen” off James 2008 release Waiting in Vain below:

A Place To Bury Strangers @ Emos – 8/17

The darkness of A Place to Bury Strangers will soon descend upon the city lights of Austin, or at least the lights of Emos Alternative Lounge.  These sonic destroyers visit our town Sunday evening, taking a step away from their tour with Nine Inch Nails.  Expect to be wowed, and expect to lose your hearing.  Also of note…Austin’s Boxing Lesson will be one of the opening acts.  So make your way to Emos this Sunday night!

David Lindley @ Cactus Cafe (8/15)

David Lindley plays the extremely intimate Cactus Cafe on the UT campus Friday night. Who’s David Lindley? Only one of the most sought after sessions guitarists in the world –  he’s played with Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne and Warren Zevon to name a few – in addition to fronting bands of his own. Ben Harper cites his unique slide guitar style as a major influence. If you go, be sure to pay attention to the equipment Mr. Lindley breaks out for he’s a bit of an eccentric with a reputation for using cheap, amateur guitars which generate a distinct sound. Still need convincing? Check out the clip below of him performing “Where’s Jimmy?” live somewhere circa 97. Tickets are at the door for $20 with things starting at 9pm.

Toots & the Maytals @ Antones – 8/13

This summer I went back in time and rediscovered classic reggae, and by that, I mean the stuff that goes beyond the adoration for Bob Marley. Apparently it all had a great deal to do with the evolution in British punk, as well as that late 90s ska scene over on this continent. In that rediscovery lay the much heralded Toots, who some of you might remember from ACL a few years back. Lucky for me, he is playing tomorrow night at Antones w/ Outlaw Nation. Doors are at 8 PM.

Smoking Popes & Koufax @ Mohawk 8/12

If you are looking for a night of classic indie pop from some well-established bands then you should head out to The Mohawk tomorrow night! Smoking Popes are headlining, along with Koufax, who used to be heralded as one of indie-pop’s greats. Not to mention, you will get to see the local Austin band, Masonic. It’s sure to be a good night of classic pop tunes in the vein of the indie realm. Koufax should be debuting some new material, which has the possibility of being surprisingly good. See for yourself.

Doors to the show open at 8 PM, and you can purchase $10 tickets to the show.
