Pop Tune from Sam Cohen

sammyI’ve admired the work of Sam Cohen, be it with Apollo Sunshine or Yellowbirds, but he’s stepping out on his own entirely here.  His new work seems to draw in influences from various pop spectrums, using electronic production touches you might find in a Wayne Coyne run world, whilst still making a slight nod to the prettier side of psychedelia.  His debut album, under his own name at least, is soon to be released by Easy Sound; it’s called Cool It, which definitely fits into the stylish work he offers up here.

New Album from In Tall Buildings

driverIt seems like time might have forgotten the work of Erik Hall and his project, In Tall Buildings; it’s been nearly four years since he last released his debut, but this opening track from his forthcoming LP sounds pretty remarkable.  There’s a pulsating opening, laying groundwork for the entry of Hall’s delicate vocals.  This track seemingly builds and builds, yet it always pulls back to offer up a really subtle bit of pop sensibility that’s sure to garner interest from all sorts of listeners.  Look for his new release, Driver, via Western Vinyl on February 17th.

Bedroom Guitar Pop from the Bleaders

bleederSimplicity is the name of the game here.  The Bleaders is more or less a one-man project from Chris Leader, crafting these catchy little guitar pop songs in the solitude of his own home.  He just tossed up a nice little track for consumption via Art Is Hard the other day, and it’s definitely worth some listening attention.  There’s a guitar track recorded atop a fuzzy distorted guitar, all the while lamenting Leader’s inability to write songs as good as Brian Wilson.  It’s a basic track, even down to the production, but sometimes those are the tracks that hit the hardest. He’s got tons of other tracks to download, so check out the link above for more catchy tunes.

Father John Misty Nails It

Father John MistyI’m aware that many of you heard the buzz about this track towards the end of last week, but I’d regret not posting such a beautiful and innovative tune on our site.  Coming your way from J. Tillman, a.k.a Father John Misty, is this glorious new single “Bored in the USA”.  It’s a tough one to pin down; the joint is clearly a singer songwriter track at its core with some ironic and “white people problems” lyrics that will easily speak to a guy like me.  Call it or define it however you will, I think it will easily be one of my tracks of the year.  Be patient, listen close, and enjoy the shear beauty.

Lots of folks online are also buzzing about the recent Letterman performance of this track so I’ll link that right here.  Definitely want to check that out if you have the time.

Let’s all mark our calendars for February 10th and the release of new album I Love You, Honeybear on Sub Pop Records.[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/174787695″ params=”color=ff9900&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

The Dodos Give Us Something New

thedodos01The Dodos have always been a band beloved by those of us at ATH even if their more recent material has left us longing a bit for the good old days.  Today I’m happy to share with you this new track “Competition” that is really a return to old form in my opinion.  The song is a simple pop number with those folky overtones that made us fall for this band back in the day.  Truly a hit for the winter season.

Pick up the brand spankin’ new album Individ on January 27th via Polyvinyl Records.[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/175335454″ params=”color=ff9900&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Pop Beauty From Dam Gila

1415308795-dam-gila-so-long-leisureYawn just put out a new album this year, but that doesn’t mean leading man Adam Gil plans on taking time off anytime soon.  No, he’s been hard at work on some solo material under the moniker Dam Gila with a full album of new songs due out later this month.  Previewing the new LP is this new song “Home Again” and I’m finding myself very impressed with the solo work.  It’s a psych rock based number, with some truly incredible pop tendencies laden throughout.  I’m finding it irresistible.

New album, So Long, Leisure, is due out on November 18th.

Innocent Fun from Ghastly Menace

Austin Spotlight: Sleep Good Release New Single

godTypically, I fill our pages with Norman Wanklord rock and roll revelations in the Austin scene, but today I wanted to take a look at the ambient side of Austin’s music scene with long-time ATH favorite, Sleep Good.  Will’s been busy working on other varying projects, but he’s returned to his studio to complete the work that will comprise the entirety of his new record, Dream Dealer.  The song below is just a little taste of the instrumental structures he’s been able to compose, which no doubt also influences the film’s he’s been able to score (with some T. Malick character).  Look for his full return when the LP hits on January 6th.

Hard Rock from Hard Left

hardTrying to cram as much hard rock into your day as possible, which is why I’m bringing you this new Hard Left track…the second tune from the new band.  It was first brought to my attention because it features Mike Schulman of Slumberland Records, but the song has this great boogie to it, hiding beneath the scuzzy recording.  Yea, there’s a bit of a growl to the vocals, but you’ve got to have a hint of anger when you’re singing about Skinheads, right?  The band will release this single on a 7″ via Future Perfect Records on December 8th; here’s to a better tomorrow.

Love This New Track from Barkhouse

barkThere’s two reasons I’m in love with this track from Barkhouse.  Part of the work, particularly the drumming, reminds me of great Walkmen tracks.  On the other hand there’s a Casablancas indifference that’s been recorded in the vocals.  Together, the song packs this huge punch that’s fairly gritty, with just enough pop sensibility to keep listeners tapping their toes throughout the day.  If you dig this song, as you should, look for an EP titled Wolves at the Wall to come your way very very soon.
