Ruta Maya is a venue that probably doesn’t get enough coverage on our site, so we thought we’d throw some love their way for a sweet event they’ve got going down Saturday night. The show is a special one that features several of our favorite local up and coming acts doing nothing but Kinks covers. Lineup includes ATH favorites Golden Bear, The Bubbles, Bankrupt and the Borrowers, Tunnels, Zookeeper and a mess load of other bands that won’t all fit on this page. Music starts at 8:30 with a cover charge of $7. You can get more info on the attached poster or on the Hoot Night myspace page.

So as many of you may know, a huge new compilation disc called Dark Was the Night was recently released by the 4AD record label and Yeasayer laid down this track for it. We’ve loved ‘Tightrope” since we first saw it on The Current and then again on La Blogotheque so we were excited to hear that the band was giving the jam a proper recording session. But then bummer, the Dark Was the Night version just didn’t compare to the live tracks. Maybe the band felt the same way and maybe that’s why they played/filmed yet another version of the song for the fine folks at 4AD (or maybe they can’t make up their damn mind). This new version brings in the banjo with some melodica and can be heard/seen over on youtube. It’s way cooler than this studio version.

Just found a song by this band Headless Heroes over on LHB and immediately thought it needed to be on our site. The song appears on the album The Silence of Love which features nothing but unique and obscure cover songs. Band mastermind Eddie Bezalel handpicked some of his favorite musicians to play on the project and also tabbed incredible folk star Alela Diane to provide vocals. The combination of stellar musicianship and Alela’s vocals create something really beautiful. Check out “True Love Will Find You in the End” or stream the whole new album on the Headless Heroes website.

Ariel Pink is one of those artists who is fairly unpredictable when it comes to the live show and you never really know what the hell the guy is gonna do. Make your way out to Mohawk on Friday night to catch Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti along with blog hyped band Vivian Girls and opener Yellow Fever. If nothing else, Vivian girls proved by their SXSW sets that they can put on a decent show. Tickets for this show will be sold only at the door with music starting around 9:30.

Conor Oberst and his Mystic Valley Band have a new album, Outer South, coming out soon, and the Internet just keeps popping up with songs for us to listen to prior to the actual release. This new song is titled “Nikorette”, and it’s a lot like the last one, with its usage of full on band. But, if this song piques your interest and you want to listen to the entire album, or preorder the thing, just head on over to Merge Records to listen to the whole streaming album.

DC band Pree are a new band to us and are fairly new to the music game as well. We get tons of press releases everyday and it’s nice when we find something that really catches our ear like this band has. The self described sound of Pree mixes “Regina Spektor style narratives, Isaac Brock’s vocal stylings, haunting folk, and a remarkable command of words”. That sounds about right to us. Their debut EP A Chopping Block can be bought on itunes or in physical form on the Kora Records website. We are jammin’ it hard style.

Make your way to Emo’s on Thursday night for a nice local lineup of promising and upcoming bands. Things get started at 10pm with ATH friends Whitman so get there early and start drinking cheap tall boys. Fellow ATH favorites The Bubbles, Red X Red M, and headliners Built by Snow follow on the bill. Tickets will be sold at the door for $8, but if you RSVP at Do512, you’ll get in for only $5. Working on Friday is no excuse not to be there, it’s a holiday (for some of us).

It’s hard not to love a man with a ukulele. First, there was Stephin Merritt, and now the indie world has given us Dent May. We loved his debut album, and right now we’ll gladly get our hands on anything the man will put out, so when Daytrotter released an unreleased song, we jumped on it so as to bring it to you. Here is “Eastover Wivez.”

The new Veils record came out today and we wanted to share single “The Letter” with you guys today. It’s a catchy little pop track that’s sure to get repeated plays in the itunes. New album Sun Gangs is out today via Rough Trade.

Throw Me the Statue is one of those bands that you’ll find difficult to define immediately. They’re part Sufjan, part elctronica and stirred in a pot by the Northwest. It’s an interesting recipe for some great tunes, which is reason enough to post a song off the band’s latest Purpleface EP, which is out now via Secretly Canadian.
