SXSW 2014 Interview: Natural Child

131202-natural-child-velvet-undergroundOne of my favorite bands of the last several years, Natural Child, is making their way to Austin, again.  Despite the fact that they always seem to be here, I’m always willing to go out of my way to catch their sets.  They’ve got a new album, Dancin With Wolves, which will be out by the time the band rolls into town for SXSW; it’s a little bit different than previous work, but equally as good. The Internet allowed us to catch up with them before they head our way. Read more

Austin Spotlight: Sleepy Holler

a0903394745_10I am continually amazed by the amount of quality bands growing out of the Austin scene right now.  It seems like everyday we’re finding a new band to provide some sweet music to our ears.  Today I bring you a project from local songwriter Matthew Evans and his pal J.T. Wilcox who call themselves Sleepy Holler.  This duo have combined to create this breathtaking, sort of hushed folk music that’s both beautiful and mesmerizing while still capable of being called pop music.  To me, the band meshes the greatest parts of groups like JBM, Local Natives, and Austinites Balmorhea.  If you can’t picture that sort of thing happening, check out the track below and see what I mean.

You can check out a brand new 6 song EP by Sleepy Holler over on their bandcamp page.

Be Different, Listen to Bo Ningen

boningenI didn’t want people thinking we were going to let you get stuck in some sort of musical box today, so I wanted to offer up something entirely different via Bo Ningen.  This new single from the group has them moving in multiple stages throughout the track.  There’s a stuttering art-rock opening, with bratty vocal delivery, but things change up a bit.  They cover the tune in a floating vocal that warms things up, creating a complete juxtaposition with everything else.; you’ll need to keep an open mind, but you’ll thank me when you’re through.  You can grab this single from their upcoming No Recordings 7″ as well as their full-length, which hits stores in May.

Brand New Single from Ski Lodge (SXSW)

skilodgeOn Ski Lodge‘s Big Heart, things seemed really tight and focused, allowing the indiepop act to weave hooks into the record so well that its staying power was undeniable.  Today a brand new single entered the world, and it’s a pretty bold statement as to where the band is going, musicall.  You’ll hear a band who’ve evolved to leave you with this incredible expansive pop song, centered around a really powerful piano line.  This definitely isn’t your mom’s Ski Lodge!  You can go pick up the single from the band now, and catch them all over the States on tour, including several dates lined up for SXSW.

Great Track From James Supercave

1146725_358089577652944_1282684064_n

Here’s to hoping you enjoy this new track called “The Right Thing” from Los Angeles based James Supercave.  I personally find the tune irresistable.  Locked within we have what is primarily this synth tune, that then melds into this guitar heavy, epic rock n roll number set for arenas all over America.  Some might even hear some similarities to early MGMT here.  Either way, I think it’s super duper.

New album, The Afternoon, will be out on March 25th via Hit City USA.

Austin Show Spotlight: Young Tongue Single Release @ Red 7 (2/22)

IMG_6338Everyone in Austin should be really excited about the incredible release show lined up for Austin’s Young Tongue.  They were known previously as The Baker Family, but they opted for a name change as they felt the new name better suited the music they’ve been creating in the last few years.  They’re celebrating the release of their incredible new single “Cat Calls,” which comes with three other incredible new songs; pick it up HERE. But, in case you’re not familiar with the act, the show also features The Del-Vipers, Hikes and Residual Kid, so it’s a pretty solid line-up all around.  The show is only going to cost you $6, which is a steal for all the incredible talent that’ll be gracing the stage. Be sure to show up early and catch all the groups, and clap really loud when you hear this awesome new single.

SXSW 2014 Interview: Pizza Time

pizza

Pizza Time is the Denver-based product of one David Pizza.  Not only does he like to rock the pizza rep, but he also spends a great deal of his time offering punk rock in Spanish.   He’s done some releases with the most excellent cats over at Burger Records (though I wonder if they had issue with the band name, but I suppose Burger Time was already taken).  Anyways, David is on his way to Austin for a great SXSW, so read on for his thoughts about the festival.

Super Pumped Up Jam from Stone Cold Fox

stonecoldfoxWhile I’m not completely sure that I’m on board with the name, Stone Cold Fox, I can say that this song is doing it for me today.  I can feel the bit of Spring creeping into my windows, which means I’m ready for some full on dance party action…who said old people can’t get down.  This track is pure energy; I can see the kids fist-pumping while this blasts over their favorite clubs stereo.  This Brooklyn band surely has their finger on the pulse of the dance party, but don’t be surprised when they decide to mix things up completely for the release of Memory Place; rumor has it that there’s no style the band won’t approach.  For now, this one will do; the record comes out on May 6th.

Rocking Number from Cheap Girls

cheapgirlsYou know that feeling when you put on a new track and you’re immediately attached to the sound? Well, that’s exactly what happened when I put on this new tune from Cheap Girls; it’s something that begged to be put immediately into our daily schedule.  You’ll find that the guitars are reminiscent of a solid alternative rocker, but there’s a deep quality to the vocals that really stuck with me. It’s a song that borders on the line of Americana, but offers a hint more rock n’ roll for your ears.  Their album Famous Graves will be out on May 13th via Xtra Mile Recordings.

Be Entranced by Amen Dunes

585

This track “Lonely Richard” from Amen Dunes has a great, haunting sound to it.  I’d call it a dark, enchanting, singer-songwriter tune that could easily be compared to something from the early days of Sun Kil Moon.  I’m cool with that.  Though you won’t find much “rising action” in this track, the slow and steady beat throughout will beg you to hit play again when the song ends.  You did it didn’t you?

Pick up new album, Love, on May 13th via Sacred Bones.
