New Liars Jam Coming Your Way

liarsFor as long as I can remember, I’ve admired the work of Liars.  Their records never once sound the same, yet they always have some linear links to previous works.  On their latest they continue to explore some of the more electronically influenced moments of their catalog, but it’s the hook during the chorus that really grabbed me.  It’s built as a danceable moment that could really unite those in attendance at a show, though I’d be remiss if I didn’t wish they threw it down just a bit harder…perhaps that’s awaiting in the live set.  You can grab their new record, Mess, on March 25th, then plan on including it in some year-end lists. They’ll also be appearing at Austin’s Psych Fest.

Fresh Tune from New Electric Ride

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALondon’s New Electric Ride get a lot of the psych nod for their work, but I don’t think that’s so much the case in their newest single, streaming below.  This tune harkens back to a period where pop construction encouraged playfulness and creativity, which is precisely what you’ll get when you listen to the tune.  It’s got a this odd organ that wraps itself around the tune, while the rest of the song is focused on the core melody.  It’s hard to not find enjoyable elements within this number.  You can pick it up on the band’s new album, Balloon Age, when it’s release on February 25th via Beyond is Beyond is Beyond.

New Jam from Flowers

flowersWhen I first played this song, I immediately thought Flowers was going for something darker than their pop stylings of early releases.  But, while that does appear to be the approach taken, the infectious voice of singer Rachel brings about a greater sense of light.  They surround the pristine vocal with swirling guitars and a down-trodden beat that broods throughout the track.  If you’re looking for a song that juxtaposes beauty with a gritty underworld then you’ll need to look no further than this jam. No idea if this comes with a release or just a jam the band wanted to share, but I’ll keep you posted as I know more.

Mozes and the Firstborn Release New Track + Video

mozesYou can’t do everything with angst and energy on a Monday, so I felt like dropping off the latest single from Mozes and the Firstborn, whom I’ve discussed on these pages before.  Every time I listen to the band I have this wonderful sense of youthfulness; the songs from the bands seem to carry a sense of wandering and undying spirit.  This week the band released the video for “Skinny Girl,” which you can find HERE. It’s one of the many great songs on the band’s self-titled debut, hitting stores on February 11th via Burger Records.  Take a listen and let yourself get carried away.

Angel Olsen Releases Another Single

angelolsenThis Angel Olsen track bounced around a few days ago, so it’s fair to say that many people have already absorbed it.  But, it’s just too good for me to ignore, not to mention it provides a little diversity to the heavier side of things we’re running today.  What first caught me was the little buzz on the sound of the guitar; it’s strange how some things will fascinate your ears.  But, Olsen really has a great grasp on her voice nowadays, and it’s perfectly on display here, offering up a sultry tone wrapped in elegance. Jagjaguwar will be releasing her new album, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, on February 18th, and it’s looking to be a must have.

Noisy Number from Solids

solidsI pressed play on this tune, and immediately I was hooked.  If you love the sound of distorted guitars forcefully making their presence felt in your ears, then it’ll take you about ten seconds to fall in love with this tune from Solids. But, despite a fuzzy  bit of guitar noise, you’ll find a warmth hiding beneath the number, making it a stellar tune to kick off your week. The duo will be releasing their debut, Blame Confusion, on February 18th via Fat Possum, followed by a tour that includes some tour dates in our home for SXSW.  Trust me on this one; it’s a gem.

Burnt Ones Announce New Album

burntones2014 has started off rather impressively for Castle Face Records, and things are only getting better with the announcement of a new record from Burnt Ones.  On the first single from the upcoming Gift LP, you can clearly tell how well the band manages to work together; it sounds like a practice-space jam session recorded to perfection.  But, while there’s a quality that’s definitely a little coated in atmospherics, there’s an underlying layer of accessibility that is definitely going to win over fans.  You can get yourself a copy of this gem on March 25th when it arrives in record stores.

New Music from Jack Name

jacknameWe feel like kicking things off on Monday should start with a little bit of introspection, but a whole lot of grit, providing you with some energy to jump into the week with just the right amount of spirit; I think this jam from Jack Name will do just the trick.  It’s a lo-fi sort of affair, with sharp distorted guitars cutting in and out of the track.  You’ll find low-end vocals beneath the front of the mix, possibly hearing a bit of Frank Black affectation.  The project will be releasing Light Show on January 28th via God? Records, followed by a show that lands the band in Austin on February 8th.

Rocking Out with Protomartyr

protomartyrWe don’t want our good friends at Hardly Art thinking we forgot about them, but they make things easy by putting out such solid jams as this one by Protomartyr. Their latest signing, Protomartyr, have this great darkness in their approach, which owes a great deal to how the vocals were recorded.  Me? I love the angular approach to the guitar playing, pushed right up against this bouncing rhythm section.  You’ll find the tune only gets better as the band jumps off energetically from time to time throughout the track.  The excellent label will release Under Color of Official Right on April 8th.

Enjoy Your Evening With Bloom

BloomEvery once in a while I catch a song I missed. This is an absolute beauty from 2010, a relative oldie for our rapid and rabid appetite, by a group called Bloom.

Hypnotizing, soothing, use it when you get home from your Free Week outing to chill. Or perhaps a little “quality time” with a certain someone… You people have dirty minds. Jeez.

The group is Jake Perrine and Michael Maricle and based in Seattle. For fans of The Album Leaf. Nothing released since 2010, so anyone in the Northwest feel like updating me, please do.
