Beach Vacation Checks WA Weather

beachvacayI’m waiting for this rain to clear away, so in searching for that, I’m also searching for some sunny music to carry me through these rough couple of weeks.  That’s how I discovered Beach Vacation, who’ve got their Maritime EP ready for release from Dufflecoat Records.  The sound of the guitar opens the track in exactly the right direction, with a swinging sensation that immediately provides joy for the listener. There’s no reason not to listen to this track and get excited about the group at hand.  You need something to cheer up your day, then come here and jam to Beach Vacay.

Yet More New Music from GRMLN

grmlnIs this album here yet? Every single time I get a new track from GRMLN I get excited by the prospect of the fun to be had when Empire finally hits stores on June 4th. Personally, the further we get along, the more I see a similarity in the hype that surrounded Wavves when Nathan first broke onto the scene. And just like those raucous tunes, the songs, including the one below, are filled with energy and brevity, giving us the perfect blend of brevity and pop goodness.  Carpark will be releasing the album, and you can be sure that I’ll have good things to say about it!

Bouncy Indie Pop from StarTropics

stThose of you following the indie pop world with a keen eye know that one of the best little labels is Manic Pop Records from Minnesota.  The label is quickly making a name for itself by releasing gem after gem.  One of their upcoming releases is this new 7″ from Chicago’s StarTropics.  I can’t get this tune out of my head right now.  At the beginning, I thought it had this Drums affectation, just basing that off the rhythm section, but it then begins to explore a more gentle sonic realm.  You can pick up the By My Side/Tempest 7″ on May 22nd.

PYAITK: In The Valley Below

My friend Mike Taylor turned me on to this band. He hosts a show over at Amazing Radio you should check out when you get a chance.

In The Valley Below are a boy-girl duo out of Echo Park and dammit if they aren’t disciples of The Rosebuds. Pretty stuff, but with an edge of darkness underlying chords and tones. Some tracks are melodically driven, shared vocal duties between Jeffrey Jacob and Angela Gail, other tracks feature exchanges of differing phrasing and overlapping lyrics. I have enjoyed every song off of the Hymnal EP, but I agree with Mike that “Last Soul” deserves to be a hit. Make it so, people.

I missed them during SxSW. Bummer. They’ll be in the UK for the rest of the month, but return to Cali in June and hopefully swing back through town later this year…

New Twang from Moondoggies

moondoggiesoggIt seems like forever ago that we first heard from Moondoggies, and after the release of their debut, they’ve been sort of quiet.  But, things are changing, as the group is readying Adios I’m a Ghost for Hardly Art.  It’s definitely a swirling Americana influenced song, with guitars wrapping around the vocals almost from the get-go.  There’s even a bit of a stomp, accentuated by a soloing guitar at the end of the track, highlighting the spirit and tenacity of the band.  If you’re digging what you hear, you can grab the record at your local store when it hits on August 13th.

Pulsating Tune from Barbarossa

barbarossaThe last few years has seen some incredible voices come into the foray, such as Justin Vernon.  I don’t know why, but when I think of Barbarossa singer James Mathe, I get the same sensation from him.  While he started out as more of an acoustic troubadour, you won’t see that in the rhythmic pulse of his latest single, “Turbine.” You’ll find the song on his latest effort, Bloodlines, which is being released by Memphis Industries on August 8th.  By all accounts, this won’t be a stripped down affair, as Mathe aims to broaden his sound.  But for me, it’s all about the voice–just take a listen.

Mellow Jam from Camera Obscura

cameraobscura11Man, I can’t tell you how long I’ve waited to hear more from Camera Obscura.  Their last two albums have long haunted my playlist, always leaving a special place in my heart.  Today they released the second single from their upcoming album, Desire Lines, which will be released by 4AD on June 4th.  Listening to this track, I love the relaxed quality of the tune, taking its time for Tracyanne to win us all over with her vocals.  It’s a simple tune in construction, aside from some soloing guitar work near the latter half of the song, but it’s perfect in execution, guaranteeing that we’ll love the new record.

More New Music From Big Deal

jpegBig Deal is a band that I took a liking to after we shared their new song “Teradoctol” with you guys a few months ago.  Today we get another taste of new material with latest single “Dream Machine”.  I hear sounds similar to bands like Races mixed with more electronic based groups like Purity Ring.  Either way, this band is growing on me with each and every spin.

New album June Gloom will be released on June 4th via Mute Reocrds.

More New Music from Teleman

telemanOut of the ashes from Pete and the Pirates came Teleman, made up of several members of the band. They’ve previously released  one single, and now it seems like a new one is on the way from their very own imprint, Encona Records. This new single is more what I expected from the new group, providing more energy than their previous single.  Still, it holds onto the careful pop vibe, especially apparent on this tune during the chorus.  At the rate they’re going, it’s only a matter of time before the group has a full length on the way.  Look for this single on July 1st.

Nice Pop Music From Rathborne

brea_soudersLuke Rathborne is not a gentleman I know a whole lot about at this point, but I do know that I enjoy the sounds he’s currently creating.  His introduction to me, “Last Forgiven”, is streaming below and serves as a great pop hello to anyone unfamiliar with the artist.  He certainly has a knack for writing some interesting guitar driven pop tunes.

Rathborne has a new album called Soft due out July 2nd and is available for pre-order now.
