Turn It Up Loud For This Post Punk From FEWS

fewsSwedish band FEWS have just signed to Play It Again Sam, which means that they deserve to be on your to-listen list. This track “The Zoo” from the group of gentleman is a three and a half minute cyclone of post punk, that whirls through with its violent guitars and brooding darkness. It doesn’t take long at all to be swept up in the tune, which makes me believe that their upcoming debut album, that we should expect sometime early next year, will be one not to miss. Take a listen below.

1035x845-20140613-futuredeath-x1800-1402691556

I know it’s a little hard to believe that Fun Fest is somehow going down this weekend.  It seems like we just recovered for a festival and now we have more fun to be had.  ATH will be ready of course with our previews (check out some from last week), interviews, and general advice for the weekend.  Our first interview of the years comes from up and coming locals Future Death.  We’re big fans of the band so imagine the excitement when they agreed to answer some of our ridiculous questions.  Follow the jump for more.

Dreamy Shoegaze from Overlake

overlakeThere’s two sides of sheogaze being tossed around these days: the heavy and the soft. For Overlake, it seems like they’re taking on the softer side of the genre, unleashing their own wall of buzzing guitars when necessary. But, they also hold back from time to time, allowing listeners to immerse themselves in the songs before being flung back into the fray of the chorus’ frayed guitar sound. This tune is featured on the band’s new single, which is just being released this week on the new Travelogue 7″, so be sure to get your hands on it while you can.

New Video from Goon Sax

11882826_971361752910446_5753706099835439845_oSeeing as we’re nearing the end of the year, this video from Goon Sax comes at just the right time. The video serves as a reminder that we should all be on the look out for the band as they prepare for the release of their new record, Up To Anything…slated for a 2016 release via Chapter Music. It’s a pretty rad little video, with the narrator coming via the band doing a little walkabout.  Feel free to file this tune under things you’ll never get out of your head…or my head. We’ll keep you posted as more news comes our way for the final release.

EZTV Cover Chris Knox

EZTZ-Calling-OutI’m not typically one to discuss cover tunes, but seeing as this song involves two of my favorites, Chris Knox and EZTV, I feel like it’s justified. EZTV is one of the various acts that really caught me this year, and they definitely do justice to one of Knox’s most popularized tracks. It’s all in honor to celebrate that Captured Tracks (the label of EZTV) will be reissuing Knox’s catalog, including some of his work with Tall Dwarfs. I guess the best thing about a cover is that it encourages you go back and dig through your records, or it opens doors for new listeners. Either way, you can’t go wrong listening to this track, or to either of the band’s (people) involved.

Austin Spotlight: Jonas Wilson Pens New Tune

jonasI feel like I know a lot of people about town, but even despite all his various works, I was pretty unaware of Jonas Wilson until the other day. That changed when his new single, “The Bleeder,” leaked out to the Internet world, catching my ear. I think there’s a really smooth touch to the production, providing a soft touch to a song that really seeks to slowly pull at the listener. I’m a huge fan of all the little notes and musical touches that are placed in the background, adding some density to the song. As of now, it’s a one off single, but worth your time today.

Fortuna Pop Brings You Chorusgirl

Chorusgirl_Close_up_Blue_webToday’s the day when I get to count on reliable labels I adore to bring us great new tunes, such as this brand new single from Chorusgirl. There’s a definitive nostalgic nod, as mentioned in the band’s bio (Lush/The Cure), but I see the group fitting right alongside acts like Eternal Summers. You’ve got guitar work swirling around the vocals, all the while the rhythm section propels the song forward, giving the track a juxtaposition between brooding and shimmering joy. You’ll be able to grab their debut album from Fortuna Pop on November 13th.

FFF Artist Spotlight: Mikal Cronin

mikal croninWe’re a week out from Fun Fun Fun Fest 2015, and you should probably be getting your schedule nailed down, so I’m here to help you out. Mikal Cronin is an act that’s sure to make your list of highlights on Monday after the fest when all is said and done. Once you press play on the single “Made My Mind Up” from back in January of this year, you’ll be enamored with the breezy alternative rock that Cronin brings to the table. The driving electric guitar, embellished with tinkling piano and soaring vocals will certainly be wonderful to start your fest off at 2:25 on Friday afternoon on the Orange Stage. Or perhaps a good way to round out your first day of festing Friday night at 10:45 at The Mohawk.

P.S. Have you picked up your wristband at The Funderdome yet? Get to stepping.

Another Day, Another Sunturns Hit

sunturnsWhen I first heard of Sunturns and their Christmas oriented pop project, I was on the verge of dismissing it. But, I’ve quickly come around on falling for the band, all based upon the power of their delectable indiepop hits. You see, while the songs spin around Christmas ideas, they still have this emotional draw in the lyrics, drawing from personal experiences around the holiday. Honestly, if you didn’t hear the word Christmas, you’d likely just fall in love with the song. It’s heartwarming, both lyrically and musically; the band have crafted 10 original songs and a Ramones cover for their Christmas II album, which you can grab from the good folks over at Fika Recordings.

Soaring Beauty from Over Sands

over-sands-press-photo-2I just wanted something that felt like drifting, something that felt like floating away. Luckily, this Over Sands track sort of carried itself into my inbox, bringing with a huge sound and this twinkling bit of beauty. It’s the sort of tune that drowns out the world around you, clearing your thoughts away…just sink into the track. Be it the electric wash or the airy vocals bursting through your speakers, you’re going to give in to this number. You’ll be able to hear this one on the project’s debut EP, which comes out late November courtesty of B3SCI.
