ATX Spotlight: New Tune from Ramesh

RameshWe’ve made no secret of adoration for former Voxtrot frontman, Ramesh.  We even went so far as to help make sure you could grab his first solo LP on vinyl (it’s right HERE).  He’s one of my favorite songwriters, period, and he recently sent me a tune he worked on with his friend Emeen. There’s some great arrangement work on this track, highlighted with Ramesh’s careful vocal and a swelling sound pushed forth by the piano.  No word on if this is just a one off, or if Ramesh is going back in the studio to bring you his second album, but we’ll let you know as we do. Now you can enjoy your Friday with this great tune.

Interesting Pop From Ms. John Soda

Andreas Staebler_2I’ve always been a fan of slightly weird or different sorts of pop music and this new track from German duo Ms. John Soda is right up my alley.  It’s electronic in nature I suppose with elements of great boy/girl duo Beach House, but with a brighter and almost sunny feel.  Check out interestingly titled “Hero Whale” below and let us know what you think.

Sorry I Missed You: Lylas

lylasLast week I was really into this new Lylas tune, but for some reason, I lost my way and forgot about it.  I suppose that’s precisely the way Lylas, the project of Kyle Hamlett, would want it; it’s a rather unassuming track, but one that has these tiny little movements that capture the ear of the listener.  It’s a journeyman’s song, carrying you along the way, which is perfect for a nice drive through the heated summer horizons.  It might not hurt that the group organized behind Hamlett features members of Natural Child, Lambchop and Stone Jack Jones…but no word on further releases other than this here track.

Gun Outfit Give You Mellow Folk Rock

10325577_1387509698154727_9205184690863579935_nGun Outfit are a group out of Southern California who are back with their fourth studio album, Dream All Over, which is due out October 16th on Paradise of Bachelors. From this new album they’ve shared the lead single, “Gotta Wanna,” and it’s a low-key simmering track with folk and americana influences. If you’ve ever been to SoCal you’ll understand how the track mimics the landscape there; the bluesy guitar work meanders easily through the mix while those dueling male/female vocals waft gently in, giving the track a desert rock feel to it. I’m digging this subtle jam, and I’m looking forward to more from Gun Outfit.

Here We Go Magic Are Back!

unnamed-2So Here We Go Magic have finally announced their return to the music scene with a new album and by sharing this robust and snappy single, “Falling,” from that upcoming record. This newest effort from the crew is called Be Small, and it’s slated for release on October 16th via Secretly Canadian. If the sound of this new single is any indication of the caliber of tracks on said record, then it looks like we’re in for a treat. “Falling,” starts out like other Here We Go Magic tracks, as the band tends to build layer atop layer of sound; synths waft in and out and the multiple vocals blend together to create an electro pop dimensionality to the indie pop. What I’m most digging about this track though, is the break down into the real end jam at the 2:20 mark of the song where you really just want to get up out of your chair and dance along. Fun Little Number from Oryx and Crake

oryxandcrakeI was first caught by this track solely based on the name of the band, Oryx and Crake; it just happens to be one of my favorite Atwood novels. Musically, the band’s quite interesting.  There are elements that remind me of that mid-period Of Montreal, yet there’s this added frivolity that sort of reminds me of Tilly and the Wall (it also closes in a Bowie/Bolan nod).  Of course, all of these are just the things I hear in the songs, so you’re likely to find something entirely different.  This September the band will release their new LP, Marriage, via Deer Bear Wolf.

Lush Electronic Track From Night Beds

11401560_919869138052336_291989132081755817_nAs we await the release of Night Beds‘ newest album, Ivywild, which is due out in a few short weeks, we’ve been graced with a great track from that album that has plucked my interest for this band once again. “Corner,” is a pleasant little balance of cool electronic elements and warm vocal performance from Winston Yellin. Whereas the prior tracks I’ve heard from this group were big and seemingly impersonal, though still right jams, this one is an electronic groove that retains the personal aspect to it. The subtle touches in production help fully flesh it out, and I’m excited to see what the rest of Ivywild has in store for us. Grab it from Dead Oceans on August 7th or preorder it here.

11700529_10106409461315020_3334396368786306187_oAustin’s got a lot of musical things going, even a growing hip-hop scene, but one thing I’ll admit it lacks is a truly solid indiepop scene.  It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s one of my favorites, so I’m always clamoring for a great show.  We’re getting just that tomorrow night at Hotel Vegas as the dreamy Baltimore shoegazers in Wildhoney will be gracing us with their presence.  That alone is enough to warrant your attendance, but there’s three local acts that are just as good.  You’ve got Loafer, Rose Selavy (who have a 7″ coming up soon via ATH Records) and you’ve got Tres Oui.  Wait, you haven’t heard Tres Oui? Me either, but it’s the new project of Nate from Literature…one of the greatest indiepop bands out there. So, those of you with that softer side of indie rock in your blood, join us at 10 PM tomorrow night.

ATX Spotlight: Flatliner Shares Black Medicine EP In Full

unnamedWe’ve been telling y’all about this Black Medicine EP from Austin’s own Flatliner for a little while now, but now there is really no excuse not to take a listen to some of the finer Austin tunes on the electronic/dance side of things. A week before its street release, Flatliner are streaming this ethereal dance party up on their soundcloud page for you to enjoy for free and then pick up the physical release next week. The whole thing is a mix of dystopian waves of synth and dark grooves to get your ass moving. Once you’re done jamming to these great electronic sounds, you can head over here to preorder the record.

Melt Your Face With Two New Songs From Fuzz

fuzzLook, I’m not here to tell you how to live you life, but when it’s halfway through the work week and you’re dragging along, one thing that always refreshes me is some good old fashion face melting rock and roll. Fuzz, another outfit from Ty Segall and company, are here to aid in that refreshing process with the announcement of their second full length album called II, and with the gift of two new tracks from that upcoming record. This new album will be out October 23rd via In The Red Records, and while we await that record, we can taste what’s to come with “Pollinate,” and “Rat Race.” While both of these tracks bring the psychedelic rock and roll to your ears, they do so differently: “Rat Race” is more of a straight up rock track with punk influences, while “Pollinate,” is a grungey psych rock slow burner. I’m digging both, what are your thoughts?
