Yukon Blonde Will Have You Dancing

10982765_10152735413171733_8132872712012660046_oVancouver’s Yukon Blonde have shared a catchy as hell new single from their upcoming third studio record, On Blonde, that’s due out June 16th. “Como,” the track below, is a pure party that pulls out all the stops to have you shake it with the band. The song walks the fine line between pop and psychedelic rock, with the presence of highly distorted guitars and synth that echo through the track nonstop. But then there are the vocals, often joined by some group backing vocals for the “oohs,” that are playful and fun. “Como,” has all the makings of a song that will be stuck in your head for days to come, but in the best possible way.

ATX Spotlight: New Dana Falconberry

danaDana Falconberry has been one of the most prominent voices in Austin songwriting for the last several years.  There’s a fragility in her voice that I’ve always found rather fascinating, and she’s got a great story to her new EP, The Lowering Night.  Seemingly fed up with the cycle of record, wait, release, tour, etc, she wanted to sit alone in her bedroom and write entrancing tunes.  The songs are meant for just you and Dana, her voice as your night companion…or day companion if you choose.  She’s technically offered up the EP for free, or name your own price, but I encourage you to donate a dollar here and there to help fund her continued craft.

Even More From Beach Baby

Untitled-1Nathan and Nicole have both already posted about up and coming UK band Beach Baby so I figured I better get on this cool kid train before it passes me by.  I’m winning between the three of us though because I’m getting to post what is, in my opinion, the best track of the lot entitled “No Mind No Money”.  From when we first heard the band back in February, I’m seeing an impressive progression here with more grit, power, and energy behind the already beautiful pop sound.  I expect these guys to be blowing up stateside real soon.

Beach Baby’s latest 7″ single with B-side “U R” is available for pre-order right now via B3SCI Records (out June 23rd).

Meek Mill beat revival

Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill has hit the ground running since being released from prison in December. One of his recent contributions is a freestyle over a redone version of the same sample used on Raekwon’s 1995 single “Ice Cream”. Some may see this as a desecration, but I see it as a dedication. Meek Mill goes off in his usual aggresive delivery and the end result is gold.

ACL Lineup Is Here!

untitledThough the lineup unofficially leaked yesterday, we were holding off to make sure everything was all official and whatnot before posting anything.  So if you haven’t seen it yet, the ACL lineup was just announced this morning for both of the festival weekends.  Of course ATH is excited about seeing The Strokes again, but as usual, we’re enjoying the undercards with groups like Kurt Vile, Waxahatchee, Talk in Tongues, Jose Gonzalez, etc.  Check out the full lineup here and form your own opinions.

You can also pick up a 3 day pass at 10am central time by following this link.  Do it.

Cinerama vs the Wedding Present

the-wedding-present-valentinaI wish more people would talk about the Wedding Present.  David Gedge has long been a favorite of mine, and sometimes I feel like he slips under the radar.  But, he’s reviving one of his other projects, Cinerama, to spin the song’s from The Wedding Present’s last album, Valentina, in an entirely different manner.  Part of it is endearing, part of it is hilarious; it sounds like David’s doing his best Tom Jones impression…and it’s a damn good one. Gadgets voice will always have a special place in my heart. Listen below so you can compare and contrast the two versions before we get to hear it all reimagined; should be out this month.

ATX Spotlight: New Yuma Tune + Show Preview

11054385_1069905849688762_5689455370238310354_oLooks like this year’s going to be a great one for Yuma. The band has already released one new track, with this fresh number sure to stop you in your tracks.  “Loglo” is the name of the tune, and it’s likely to be one of the best pop tracks to come out of Austin this year.  You’ll hear a nice groove crafting a playful atmosphere, and the vocals add to that effect, making it the perfect jam for your pre-summer parties.  To celebrate the release of this new single, which you can grab HERE,  the band will be playing an incredible show at Blackheart on Saturday night.  Care Package (members of Borrisokane) opens the night, followed by Rose Selavy, Yuma and then Ramesh.  If you’re not planning on being at Levitation, this is the best possible show you can attend on Saturday night; we’re happy to be a part of it.

Wednesday night ’round these parts has got you set out to make a tough decision as to how to spend your evening. Nathan already gave you a preview of the Stephen Merritt show that’s bound to be great, but I figured I’d throw a wrench in things and tell you about another show that’s sure to be a jangly guitar-rock filled good time. Crocodiles, who are on the verge of releasing their new LP, Boys are hitting Holy Mountain to give us some of the treats off that upcoming record. Having already spent some time with those new tracks, I can tell you it’ll be a smash. They’ll be joined by lovely locals ¿Qué Pasa? and Unknown Relatives which should make for a night brimming with psychedelic and hazy rock and roll. For ten dollars, you really can’t miss this.
