ATX Spotlight: Comforter Ready Album

11270397_405357546315566_474241612007102356_oTons of great music is coming out of Austin lately, and Comforter have kept my attention with their first few singles.  Their latest, “Hardies,” opens up slowly, twinkling guitar chiming in the foreground.  As the drums kick in the song takes off, soon joined by resounding backing vocals to emphasize the lyrical content.  The drum work also adds a nice little pace to the track, while the emotional warmth steadily climbs in the listeners ear.  They’ll be releasing their new album for Merdurhaus Records this Saturday at Cheer Up Charlies with Alex Napping and Summer Salt.  Definitely something that should be on your radar going into the weekend.

ATH @ Austin Psych Fest’s Levitation 2015

Time to reflect on Levitation 2015. I liked the name change away from Austin Psych Fest when it was announced as there are several bands that that may meander towards that genre, fans of the genre may love, but just aren’t “Psych” bands. I hope they continue to expand the diversity of the lineup. With that, let’s talk about this year and then you can gander a whole mess of photos taken at the fest.

ICYMI: Levitation Schedule Released

LEVITATION-2015-SQUAREWhat’s up, nerds?

Late last week, Austin Psych Fest announced the schedule for this year’s Levitation Festival. I love it. Even if you have a conflict, you will have an opportunity to meander in the fringes and bolster you festival band count. If you don’t want to meander, you’ll have nice breaks between bands to allow for extra-curricular activities like, ya know, eating and drinking and not dehydrating and shrivelling. It is not a sprint, it is a marathon.

Can’t wait to be miserably tired when The FLaming Lips take the stage on Sunday at 11:45pm…

I Was A Tourist In My Own Town

Formula OneI know FFF9 is upon us, but I would like to reflect on Formula One. It is something you here on the news. It is what many of you mistakenly call that thing out there on the east side of the airport. A long time fan, F1 weekend is just like a music festival to me. It is three days of party and day-drinking. But F1 weekend, with help from Transmission, has actually been able to provide a bit of music festival to go with the festival of speed.

You see, having Circuit of the Americas in Austin is a rather special thing. It is the only track to host Formula One in the United States and that means nearly a half-billion worldwide viewers know where we are and what we do. It hosts MotoGP, Tudor United and World Endurance Championship. It also has a big-ass music venue and that cool Loch Ness monster looking tower. Like I said, it is kind of a big deal. COTA is also nice enough to host Fan Fest downtown. This year, I hit night one with the Haloween crowd Friday and was lucky enough to check out Duran Duran Saturday. You will get a few DD cause I already posted the big gallery, but you will get plenty of Broncho, Devotchka, De La Soul, crowd shots and stuff from the track. I skipped Kid Rock, though regretting that a little. O_o

I Went To Three More Days Of ACL

Surviving ACL 2014On Monday, I was tired. The four days between ACL Weekends included a day of recovery, a full week’s work of the day job in three days and quite a bit of time editing photos. Then three more days of fun, jams and mud – and not necessarily in that order. But it was time for entertaining out of town guests, playing tour guide, eating the best festival food and navigating through the depths humanity with a soundtrack provided by festival bands.
