Show Preview: The Both @ the Mohawk (8.13)

tednaimee

Date Wednesday, August 13th
Location Mohawk
Doors 6:30 PM
Tickets $22 from Mohawk

I’ll be the first to admit that I vastly overlooked the first release from The Both, the album of work from Aimee Mann and Ted Leo.  The self-titled record took me by surprise, and perhaps I didn’t give Mann enough credit.  It’s a spot-on album of great pop tunes, from two great songwriters, and I know that Ted will definitely be bringing his showmanship to the stage (I’ve yet to catch Aimee).  I’m not even sure if the duo will continue writing together, so you’ve got to be there to catch them while you have the chance. And, opening the show will be Lemuria, who won us over with their album, The Distance is So Big.  This is a night worth every dollar.

Dangerous Tune from Youth Code

youthAt first, I loved this song. Then I hated it. Then I figured, why the fuck not post it and let you decide? I love the anger that’s unleashed on the listener, reminiscent of early industrial acts, then melding it with post-hardcore acts of the late 90s.  It’s an interesting composition, frightening at moments, then thrilling at other instants. Youth Code have composed four new tracks, of which this is one, and then the flip-side of this new EP has remixes by the likes of Clipping. You can grab the A Place to Stand EP from the band on September 23rd from Dais Records.

Discovery Day: Tee- Tahs

teetahIt’s easy to stay on top of the music game nowadays.  I mean, Stereogum and P4k are going to post an insane amount of songs each day that you’re supposed to care about.  But, I love to scour the net for hidden gems, which is how I came upon Canada’s Tee-Tahs.  I heard of them by scouring my daily rounds on Finest Kiss, who introduced me to this infectious bit of pop music.  They’ve just released their record, Buzzkill, and it’s nothing short of a good time.  The lyrics seem to show an indifference to any sort of worldly themes, holding onto what makes being a music fan so enjoyable…unadulterated good times.  The tunes you’ll find are joyous and silly, laying the groundwork for a group that just wants you to have a really great time listening to their work.  So get on the train with me, we’re going to see Tee-Tahs.

Show Review: Miniature Tigers @ Stubbs Jr. (8/6)

mini-t-press-600x600

Wednesday night at Stubbs Jr. offered a bill of three gracious acts that seemed to be happy to be playing to the live music scene of Austin, let alone to a crowd that was quite amped up. While the crowd was ready for almost anything, the bill didn’t stray far from the indie and synth pop that Miniature Tigers put out, and each opening act did exactly their job as openers; tantalize the crowd with enough pop jams to get them warmed up for the headliner.

New Music from Tomorrow’s Tulips

ttYou ever discover one of those tracks that makes you go “what the fuck?” “What is this?” Yet, then you realize you’ve played the track a dozen times and now your stuck? That’s precisely what I got from this coffee shop haunt of a tune from Tomorrow’s Tulips.  There’s minimal percussion, quieted guitar bits, and this deep croon that weaves its way throughout the song.  It’s really a song that pulls you in emotionally; it’s like watching a train wreck, yet you can’t pull your eyes away…making this quite a remarkable number.  You’ll be able to find this tune on their new album, When, which is being released by Burger Records on October 7th.

Austin Spotlight: Balmorhea

BALMORHEA1At this point in their musical career, I’d say that Austin based group Balmorhea are easily one of the most recognize names in the indie scene.  They caught our attention around the inception of our website with their roots and atmospheric take on instrumental music.  I’m pleased to be sharing with you today their latest single called “HEIR I”.  The track has that familiar Balmorhea feel as it slowly builds towards this moment of sheer beauty about two or so minutes in.  This would a perfect song to enjoy some Sunday morning coffee.

This song appears on a brand new 7″ coming out on October 14th via Western Vinyl.

FF Announce Debut Album for Couple Skate

ffWe’re nearing the end of the day, and I’m nearing the end of my first run of energy.  But, thanks to this great track from FF, I think I’m revving up and rearing to rock through the rest of the day.  There’s an emotional yearning that seems to run through the track; it’s something about the vocal tones; I dig it, regardless.  It’s a pretty noise track otherwise, though not pumping noise for the sake…more for the energetic punch that likely impacts the Seattle trio’s live shows.  They’ve just announced they’re going to release their debut, Lord, on Couple Skate Records near the end of October (10.21).

Stay Tuned for Project #ATX6 — Coming to ATH Next Week (8.12)

ProjectATX6ImgI love interesting film endeavors, especially when they relate to music.  So, when we were offered the chance to help roll out the first Episode of Project #ATX6, we jumped at the chance.  The documentary series follows 6 Austin musicians as they travel from Austin to various International festivals, exporting their music beyond the confines of our fair city.  Plus, the series is going to be organically grown, premiering on various Internet outlets to spread the word on the project.  The six featured artists are Dana Falconberry, Aisha Burns, Carson Mchone, Mrs. Glass, Leo Rondeau and Jesse Moore.  You can read more about the project HERE.  And!!! Next week we’ll premiere the first episode on August 12th, 8 AM CST…so stay tuned.

Hear Part Time’s Track off Their Split with Gap Dream

jameyThere were hints of a softer side to Davida Loca on his last Part Time release, PDA, but you get a full glimpse with his shimmering synth pop tune that plays his part of the 7″ split with Gap Dream. It’s a relaxed tune, not moving quickly, but you get a delightful bounce through the electronic work he’s done on this tune.  It should whet your appetite enough to order the release from Burger Records, but you can also grab it from them live when both bands go on tour together throughout August/September, including a date at Hotel Vegas on August 28th.

Summer Tune from Pool Holograph

PHpromo1Summer time is about letting loose and having fun.  Whether that’s hanging at the pool with your friends or sitting beach-side with your family, you’re supposed to relax and let everything go.  This tune from Pool Holograph is perfect for that sentiment; it’s filled with an exuberance that’s playful in every way, especially the way the cymbals are ridden throughout the track.  The vocals add a nice touch, bursting forth during the chorus into a delightful croon.  This is the first single off the group’s forthcoming album, Mortals, which should hit this Fall.
