Old School Feeling Pop from Society

societyWay back in my youth, and probably some of yours as well, there were artists spinning blends of pop around hip-hop breaks and samples, then mixing them with various orchestral arrangements to thicken the sound.  There were certain records from that period that still haunt my computer playlist.  I get a similar feeling when I listen to Society, the project of James Girdler, who seemed reluctant to come out into the open after his first single was so well received.  Listening here, it’s definitely British, definitely enchanting. Let it take you to the weekend.

Noisy Rocker from Running

runningYou looking for something that’s gritty and abrasive? Well, you won’t have to go any further, as I’ve got this brand new track for you from Running.  It’s a short track filled with several varying moments; there’s the methodical grinding of guitars and drums and there’s the furious barrage of noise that attacks your ears.  Then before you know, discordant noise fades out into the background; the song is over. If you’re a fan of what’s coming out of your speakers, then keep your eyes peeled, as the band’s Vaguely Ethnic LP comes out next week via Castle Face Records.

So you aren’t going to the dance party at ACL Live with Empire of the Sun? (Plug for IT Dept. Summer playlist) How about something completely different?

Sure, Futurebirds are headlining, but damn, what an undercard with buzz-band Diarrhea Planet and locals The Midgetmen. I am going to set you up with a pair of songs to listen to to get your money spent in the stairwell and a stamp put on your hand. My favorite is the smiley face.

Solid New Single from Those Darlins

thosedarlinsListening to this new single from Those Darlins, I kept expecting the band to just blast off into typical rock fare.  But, to the defense of this tune, they show a bit of restraint, slowly letting the song unfold atop the guitar lines.  For my two cents, this is the most impressive track I think the girls have written to date…I’m a fan of the ballad format when it’s perfected like this.  The band have announced that Blur the Line, their new record, will be released on September 1st, with a huge nationwide tour coinciding with the album’s release.

Catchy Pop From Future Loves Past

FLP_Fireplace_NewTo be honest, I knew very little about Tempe based band Future Loves Past prior to making this post today.  I do know that the band have a new album entitled All the Luscious Plants dropping on September 24th via Common Wall Media.  I also know that the band have graciously made this new track “Pretty Things” available as the first free single from their new album.  As my first taste of the bands sound, I dig their poppy, fun, and even dancey style that can be infectious at times.  Maybe you feel the same?

Enchanting Pop From Forest Fire

forestfireForest Fire is a band that seemingly blew up over night a few years ago with the release of Survival, but have since cooled off quite a bit while quietly releasing new album Staring at the X in 2011.  Well the band are returning in 2013 with a planned new album entitled Screens coming our way on September 10th via Fat Cat Records.  Below you can find the first single “Waiting in the Night” made available a few days ago.  It’s a bit of a slow bunner pop style song with beats and guitars that remind me of earlier style Yeasayer.  I have no problem with that.

Austin Spotlight: New Crunchy Track from Not In The Face

Not In The FaceAustin’s Not In The Face has been making quite a name for themselves for the last few years, melting faces with their brash rock n’ roll and outrageous live shows.  They’re wrapping up work on a brand new EP, and they’ve let us share one of these new jams with you all.  Now that the band has moved up from a duo to a tight-knit four piece, their sound is huge, as witnessed in this track.  The vocals have the classic rock swagger, but the music just sounds ready built for arenas–in a good sense.  This is definitely a track that’s going to burst some ear drums, so keep an eye out for a great rock show near you; the band has dates in Ft. Worth, Austin and Houston in early August.

Breezy Surf Pop From La Luz

_MG_1873asm_1__small.1La Luz is a band that we’ve followed for awhile so we were excited to hear that the ladies had recently signed to one of our favorite labels Hardly Art.  With new album It’s Alive coming in October, the band are previewing the new LP with this new track “Big Big Blood”.  As we’ve come to expect from the band, the song has a surfy undertone to it with swooping vocals similar to fellow female bands like Dum Dum Girls or La Sera.  This should definitely be an album on your radar this fall.

Tonight there’s a great local show with some of our favorite acts, playing over at Holy Mountain starting at 10 PM.  Easy Tiger will be opening up the evening right at the start, and they’ll be followed by our dear friends, She Sir.  That band just can’t stop writing great pop tunes, so you need to be there.  And, as if that wasn’t a good enough night, Migrant Kids are going to close things down in an excellent fashion.  You want to celebrate Hump Day in style? Chapter Music To Release New Record from The Ancients

the-ancients.2Seems like it’s been a good couple of weeks for our dear friends over at Chapter Music in Australia.  They let loose a few hits late last week, and they’re right back at it with the announcement that they’ll be putting out the new album from The Ancients. While the song warms to your ears slowly, the beauty that unfolds is something quite remarkable.  Be it the effortless pop vibe or the gentle delivery of the vocals, it’s a song that really deserves as much praise as you can offer.  It’ll be featured on Night Bus, which sees an October 18th release date.  Chapter deserves awards this year for sure.
