Feel Good Tune from Cowboy Indian Bear

cowboyindianbearA sure way to my heart is to throw in some gang vocals.  I don’t really care if they’re harmonized, angrily shouted or whatnot, I just want group vocals!  This beautiful track from Cowboy Indian Bear features just that, so I had to share it with you.  This isn’t an in-your-face group approach, but rather a relaxed gang vocal, accentuated by careful percussion and light instrumentation; it’s clear, at least on this tune, that the vocals are the winner…the song’s not shabby either. The band will be releasing their new record, Live Old Die Young, next week via The Record Machine, and I sincerely hope it makes it on your list of things to check out.

Show Preview: Crystal Castles @ Austin Music Hall (4.21)

Crystal Castles

Date Sunday, April 21st
Location Austin Music Hall
Doors 7:00 PM
Tickets $30 from Frontgate

I’ve been really excited about this show since its announcement.  Not only have I really appreciated the growth of Crystal Castles that was is illustrated by their latest, III, but their live show at ACL was definitely in my personal favorites this year.  They blend noise, electronica, fog and lights; it’s simply compelling.  Opening up the night is Doldrums, who aren’t too shabby either.  We’ve been fortunate enough to catch them opening for several acts over the last year or so, and I can assure you that it’s worth your time to show up early.  It might be pricy, but you’re going to get your money’s worth!

New Pop Tune from Royal Canoe

royalcanoeYou’ve gotta make Friday go off with a band, especially if you’ve got plans to wake up early and hit up Record Store Day (as you should), so I figured we’d start things off with this Royal Canoe track.  It revolves mostly around a nice little electronic beat, with some atmospheric touches added in here and there.  I like the way the vocals come in and out with different tones, and different effects atop.  If you’re enjoying yourself, be sure that you get your hands on Today We’re Believers on June 25ht via Roll Caller Records.  Damn you Canada and your catchy hits!

Hook-Laden Pop from Brass Bed

285329_10152533432835705_861324706_nThose in need of catchy pop tunes better pay attention to the latest single from Brass Bed.  The band is gearing up to release their third LP, The Secret Will Keep You, next week, and it’s definitely blending some of my favorite sounds.  I dig the usage of the organ/wurlitzer/whathaveyou with the bright tonal quality of the vocals, while the rest of the group provides a strong rhythm section that adds an extra little punch to this ditty.  Sometimes, the most successful tunes are the ones that focus on simplicity and consistency; you’re sure to find that here, and on the album.

Show Preview: The People’s Temple

Peoples-Temple-300x189

Date Friday, April 19th
Location Mohawk
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $9 @ the Door

Seems like there is a worthy show every night here in Austin, and while I know tons of bands are playing, I’m hanging my hat on The People’s Temple show over at Mohawk Friday night. This last year saw the release of their More for the Masses, which added to their already established pyschedelic blend of rock n’ roll.  I caught them at the SXSW, and thoroughly enjoyed their act, so much so that I’ll gladly see them again Friday evening.  Plus, you’ll get to throw your support behind two great local Austin acts in Mirror Travel and La Migra.  Seems like a rad way to spend a weekend night if you ask me.

New (ish) Jam from Dead Stars

deadstarsI was checking in on one of my favorite little labels, Uninhabitable Mansions, who released the excellent Still Flyin LP last year, and discovered they’ll be dropping a new EP from Brooklyn’s Dead Stars.  We’re predicting that this tune will feature on the High Gain EP, as it was just recorded this year; you can grab the EP on June 4th from the label that is home to Radical Dads.  If you listen, you’ll definitely see some dudes in love with their guitars, nodding over their shoulders to the past; we don’t mind that one bit, especially when the tune is this damn good.

Turnip King Aims to Impress…and Succeeds

turnipkingThe word lo-fi gets tossed around all the time nowadays, and we’re definitely guilty of throwing it out there too, but I think the music that Turnip King has created definitely accomplishes that sound perfectly.  There’s a bit of tape fuzz on the edges of this song, though the group has their hands wrapped tightly around pop songwriting; they just choose to go off in a more explorative direction on this track. Fire Talk Records will be releasing the band’s new Moon Landing? EP on May 28th, and I appreciate the fact that I have no idea what to expect, other than I know it will be pretty solid.

Beacon – The Ways We Separate

beaconRating: ★★½☆☆

There’s been a big push recently in the indie music scene for minimalist, vaguely R&B inspired, experimental electronic music. We’ve seen it from big names like Purity Ring and The XX, and now in lesser known, but by no means less worth listening to, bands such as Beacon. Composed of Brooklyn’s Thomas Mullarney and Jacob Gossett, Beacon released their first musical material last year in the form of two EP’s, both equally simple and stripped down thematic efforts. The Ways We Separate follows in their footsteps as an amplification of these traits, with interesting yet subtle music to fill your speakers.

Opening the album is “Bring You Back,” a single-esque track that introduces the band’s sound quite effortlessly. What begins as a simple electronic soundscape develops into a four minute, eighteen second track with a hooking chorus line for you to sing along to while you groove to the backing electronics. The high-pitched vocals juxtapose nicely with the deeper tones of the beat, to create a swirling combination that evens itself out. The track may seem mild, but it gives you a solid idea of what you are embarking upon in The Ways We Separate: an exploration of minimalism to describe and encapsulate some of the deepest emotions that are felt in love and loss. Such is felt through the deep lyrics that persistently attempt to iterate all the ‘ways’ as mentioned in the album title. Song after song is filled with little gems of lines that all abide by the same theme, collectively adding up to an album that meanders through the dark electronic

Though it tends to be on the meeker spectrum of music, there are some songs on here that make for solid dance numbers. Take the second track “Feeling’s Gone,” which starts on the same simple note as the song prior to it, but doesn’t stay as still as “Bring You Back” does. Towards the end of the track, you get this great little instrumental dance interlude that could easily be utilized on a dance floor to get your body moving.

However, instances such as this are not abundant on The Ways We Separate, leaving for a pretty one-note album, though a good one note. Some nuances can be appreciated and observed, while others seem to blur together in the overall scope of its length, which could potentially turn some listeners away from repeated listens.
