Consumerism Track of the Day: The Wedding Present – What Have I Said Now

bizarroOkay, so I’m starting off a new feature that will appear from time to time on our pages.  It’s geared around two ideas that were spawned while exhausting myself catching as many bands as possible at SXSW: the idea of running a music web site and owning tons of music.  Sure, not all of you are inundated with tons of music like I am, but in this day and age, everyone has growing catalogues of singles and albums; it’s part of living in a consumerist society.  I wanted to force myself to revisit my own history, musically, by randomly going through my iTunes.  Read on for more details about the process of selection, and see how you can participate. Sonny Smith Keeps Trucking with New Sonny & the Sunsets Tune

1838I don’t think anyone in the world works as hard as Sonny Smith, except for maybe Ty Segall.  It seems like Sonny always has something in the works, be it his solo work or his band Sonny & the Sunsets.  He just released a new single that will be featured on his upcoming effort with his band; the record is called Antenna to the Afterworld and will be released by Polyvinyl Records on June 11th.  Interestingly, this song has less of a folk feel, changing it for that current Cali guitar sound that you find in many of the modern acts from the state (many of whom Sonny has worked with).  I’m interested to see how the whole record comes together, especially if he’s mixing things up.

Get Rowdy With Kid Karate

29571_10151074750319058_513380643_n

Kid Karate is an Irish band that I wanted to check out during a rare appearance at SXSW, but my feet didn’t get moving fast enough to see any of their sets.  To make up for this goof, I thought I’d share with you a new single from the band entitled “This City” found below.  Now for those of you unacquainted with the group will notice a distinct feel of Death From Above mixed in with the likes of The Rapture or similar squealing vocal bands.  This tune is a fast paced jam that makes me want to pump my fist in the are while doing my best MJ dance moves at the same time.  Is that even possible?  Stay tuned for more information on a proper release from Kid Karate as we receive the details.

New Twee Goodness From Free Time

1827

Melbourne is quickly growing into the new Brooklyn as a hot bed for up and coming indie bands with solid tunes.  The sound is obviously a more twee influence when compared to the punk or experimental side of Brooklyn, but you get what I mean.  This new song “Nothing But Nice” comes our way from the recently formed group Free Time.  It’s eerily similar to ATH approved, and fellow Aussies, Twerps.  You know we can dig that.

Free Time have a self-titled release coming your way in the states on May 28th via Underwater Peoples.

SxSW 2013 Pics: Iggy and The Stooges @ The Mohawk

My SxSW overload begins with a show that happened at my favorite venue, The Mohawk. It was a limited entry kind of deal, badge and wristband only, no wristbands even got in – Iggy Pop and the Stooges with Japandroids.

I had requested access to the NPR showcase featuring Nick Cave and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. To think, SxSW has become the kind of event where seeing Iggy in a thousand person venue is a backup plan? Odd.

Indie Pop Bobbing with The Occasional Flickers

31230_121908194514116_3251031_nThere’s gotta be something in the water in Scotland that encourages the development of indie pop bands.  I can name a handful of bands that are on my all time favorites list, and a growing list of acts that keep pushing exporting great pop records.  My latest discovery is The Occasional Flickers who will soon be releasing their new single on Cloudberry Records.  There’s definitely an homage to early B&S here, with that driving guitar line that fits perfectly with the vocal melody; you’ll find yourself hooked to this track in absolutely no time at all.  Cheers to you Scotland, and your wonderful indie pop exports!

Get Down With Kisses

1834

It’s rare that I get into the dance/electronic side of things on ATH, so you know when I do, it has to be a jam.  Kisses are band that we’ve posted about in the past due to their catchy dance tracks, and this new grooving beat called “Huddle” is no different.  You’ll definitely here an 80s dance floor influence mixed in with some high pitched vocals that combine to get your ass moving even if you’re sitting at work.

Sophomore album Kids in L.A. hits stores on May 14th via Cascine Records.

New Music from The Sweets

1159209151-1The way the world works today, musically speaking, you’ve got to stay on top of things.  Labels and bands are capable of releasing all sorts of material in various formats, making it hard to keep up.  So you’ve got to check in on your favorites, as I was doing with Bleeding Gold Records.  They’ve just offered up a free download of this new EP by The Sweets, which is filled with calm harmonies recorded with an atmospheric DIY sensibility.  Okay, so I hate to use the world “chill,” but it’s really fitting for this track, which is the opener on the groups Montequilla EP.  Go grab it HERE, and check out some other BG releases while you’re at it.

Blissful Pop Tune from Legs

legs-e1361513246175We were happy to help our friends over at Loglady Records toss a rad party at Trailer Space during SXSW, so in exchange, they gave us this gem of a record from Legs.  I’ve got news for you folks, this is going to be your Spring party album.  Listening to their first single, it’s got an interesting angle…at first it just seems like a gentle ballad, but the ringing guitar and pounding rhythm section propel it from average jam to certifiable hit.  Today is one of those days where things just fit in perfectly.  You can expect big things from the band when Pass the Ringo comes out from Loglady on April 23rd.
