Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Mature Themes

Rating: ★★★★☆

Ever since I first caught wind of Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti it always seemed like (it actually was) one man’s recording project.  It was steeped in lo-fi recordings, occasionally allowing for the pop elements to leak out into the listener’s ear.  On Mature Themes, throw all your preconceived notions out the window and get ready for Ariel Pink’s pop extravaganza.

I swear that the first time I heard album opener “Kinski Assassin” I thought I had stumbled upon some rare Magnetic Fields track.  Deep vocal tones backed by keyboard backbones are most prevalent, fueled by witty bits of lyrics that might only connect with the songwriter.  It’s actually a solid tune, just not what I expected here. From here it blasts off with “Is This the Best Spot,” which definitely sounds more like Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti have opted to make a video game piece…it’s like the oddball version of Blank Dogs–not necessarily a bad thing.

While the group’s received a lot of praise for their work in the past, I feel as if the accessibility of Mature Themes alone warrants more fans and listeners, though that might steer away the hipster cognoscenti.  “Only In My Dreams” approximates the group’s quirky psych hits, but the production has made way for clarity that makes the record leaps and bounds better than its predecessor.  There’s warm tones from the guitar, relaxed backing vocals and a central pop element…yet it’s definitely still as playful as ever.  “Farewell American Primitive” is another track where the clarity of the pop element provides listeners with a chance to really sink themselves into the song. You can just take one listen to the vocals and you’ll see that this track is moving the band in a more direct approach to songwriting, and that will vastly benefit anyone who picks this up.

Still, I’m not going to get rid of the allusions to Stephin Merritt, though there’s slight differences present.  “Symphony of the Nymph” is another example of a track where Ariel Pink are flirting with more sincerity in their songwriting, using simple rhyme with the lyrics to provide a much-needed hook.  But, of course, the group’s always been built upon pushing the limits of their craft, and even within this track they do it successfully, happily letting the tune take turns left and right, only to return to the central pop song.

Admittedly, I can see that Mature Themes is not nearly as weird and out there as many listeners thought Before Today was.  You’ll find more tunes that allow you to sink your teeth into the lyrics, rather than coat them in meaningless atmospherics and yelps. For some, that’s going to be a detractor, as they want Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti to be their own secret joy, but with some of the best song the band’s constructed to date, that’s not going to be the case this go round.  Ignore the recent drama of the group and ignore the ideas you already have about the group.  If you do so, you’re going to find yourself pleased with a pop record that’s got far more longevity than anything the group’s put together before.

Great Rocker from Best Friends

I guess I was wrong! I had planned on making it a mellow day for you all, but I can’t resist putting up this track from Sheffield’s Best Friends. The group just did a split for Art Is Hard Records, which unfortunately sold out super fast…I guess that means everyone is as excited by them as I am at the moment.  This tune is a fast paced rocker that just jumps out of your stereo from start to finish.  I can see these guys taking the stage with Terry Malts, pummeling our ears in a furious fashion, giving us instant pop gratification. Ya dig?

New Mellow Jam from Mount Eerie

It looks as though we’re going to wrap up our great week here with the mellower side of things, and I’m perfectly okay with that.  We’re nearing the release of the second Mount Eerie album, from Phil Elverum this year; Ocean Roar is supposed to be contrasted with Clear Moon, which came out early in 2012. When listening here, I feel as if this track is dominated by the percussive element, even though it’s lightly placed in the background.  Phil quietly sings atop it all while a hint of atmospherics moving in and out.  Really, there’s no one making music like Phil.

New Music from Franz Nicolay

Franz Nicolay certainly has kept himself busy since leaving The Hold Steady.  Aside from touring with Against Me, he’s been working on new music to create his latest effort, Do The Struggle, which will be out on October 9th.  While I can definitely see a slight edge from touring with some rock n’ roll bands, that’s not what this music is about anymore for Franzy.  He’s crafted some grandiose orchestral pop that will leave you encouraged by what he can accomplish with the proper set-up.  I definitely see some strides to step out on his own, and I’ll praise him for that while waiting for the new release.

New Smooth Tune From Snowblink

I knew close to nothing about Toronto based outfit Snowblink prior to listening to their tunes today.  After a few listens, I’m glad I gave them a chance.  The band weaves a very intricate portrait with all of their beautifully crafted music.  New song below, “Unsurfed Waves”, is sure to give you some kind of an idea as to what I’m talking about when I say the band has well crafted tunes.  If I’ve peaked your interest, the band will be dropping new album Inner Classics on September 11th via Arts & Crafts Records.  Enjoy.

New Music from Michael Andrews

Odds are you know Michael Andrews better than you think you do; all I’m going to say is Donnie Darko, and let you do the research.  But, my musical tastes are all over the map today, so I figured I’d give you another gem from a singer/songwriter that I think you’ll enjoy.  Michael’s got a new record titled Spilling A Rainbow, which just came out on Everloving a day or so ago.  At times, his work here reminds me of Elliott Smith, but at other times there’s elements of Badly Drawn Boy…then again, I can see this as the work of some hipster Grateful Dead fan.  Who knows, maybe you’ll dig it.

Great Power Pop from the Barreracudas

I’ve been jamming out to the Barreracudas for quite some time, having fallen head over heels for Nocturnal Missions, their last LP.  But, this summer they kicked out the jams with a new 7″ for Windian Records, hopefully to pass the time as they record a new full-length.  If you like your guitars shredded fast with a bit of keyboard in the background to propel things in the direction of sugary goodness, then you’ll absolutely love this track.  Oh, and that slight vocal hiccup? Marvelous.  Enjoy this jam and get your hands on the 7″ before they run out!

New Single from Ethan Gold

You might have heard of Ethan Gold a bit ago when P4k raved about his latest album, Songs From a Toxic Apartment, but if not, we’ll fill you in a bit. Ethan is an LA songwriter who self-released his entire album, and now he’s aiming to create a bunch of videos to help promote the record.  On his latest single (and video) you can hear that heavy-handed guitar strumming with hints of orchestration quietly working its way from the background.  The best part of this tune is when it ups the ante on the loudness factor around the 2:10, while still maintaining that intimacy that’s made Ethan such a joy to listen to lately.  You can check out the video for the single HERE.

New Jam from Cosmonauts

The good people at Reverberation Appreciation Society aren’t solely responsible for putting on the Austin Psych Fest; they’re also in the business of putting out great tunes, such as their upcoming 7″ with Cosmonauts that features a track I’m really digging right now. It’s got this fuxxy guitar that chimes in and out throughout the whole song, but the pacing of the track really allows you to get yourself lost in the tune, particularly the way the lyrics are delivered.  There’s four tracks on this 7″, and I promise you that they’re all equally as good as the one you’re jamming to right now!

New Jam From DUDES

This song “Teenage Rebel” from San Diego based group DUDES is a little bit weird obviously, but something about has my interest peaked.  It has a nice electronic backing beat, which wouldn’t normally peak RayRay’s interest, yet that sweet guitar riff throughout with the beat has me grooving.  The group is essentially a solo project of Ryan Solomon with some other fine gents helping him out in the live setting.  A new EP from the band, Summer Vacation, is available for free stream over on bandcamp along with all record material from the project.
