We’re Not Dead Yet Pt. 2

Shakey GravesAfter a recently-relocated-to-Austin coworker went to Blues on the Green was stunned by the number of people and quality of the show, I figured I would check in on the last show of the season to see what’s doing. After all, live music is dying in Austin.

Shakey Graves has been on a roll lately, playing to bigger and bigger crowds at festivals, getting booked on late night television. Fellow photographers that were at Lolla said his set was a festival highlight. The local boy, born and raised, is poised to be a big export. Blues on the Green is certainly not pigeon-holing artists to the blues anymore as they also threw Hail-Mary with Rider Against the Storm, a hip-hop collective of good musicians and two-time winners of the Austin Music Awards’ Band of the Year.

And Now For Something Different: Steven A. Clark

463486_254391227980241_1461196547_oThis song is a little bit outside of what I normally post on here; it’s neither jangly nor surfy nor folksy. Instead, Steven A. Clark brings to the table what sounds to me like new wave pop with touches of hip hop influence. In this new single, “Can’t Have,” I’m definitely reminded of Twin Shadow‘s sound here, but the synths and percussion feel closer and louder in the overall mix, giving the track a huge sound. Not to mention the track is dance ready: you’ll find yourself nodding along to the whole thing if you’re not careful. If you like what you’re hearing, look out for The Lonely Roller, Clark’s upcoming LP, which is due out September 18th via Secretly Canadian.

First Annual Austin Record Label Flea Market

10479400_783936648390606_8423787667357574879_oThis Saturday is the First Annual Austin Record Label Flea Market; it’s at Mohawk, starting at 5 PM.  Entry is free, all ages welcome, and there will be 28 local Austin labels selling their wares, including some rare out-of-print pieces from a few of them.  There will be a great show following at 9 PM, which is also free. I’m one of the people responsible for this event, along with my friend Marcus at Transmission and Dan at Punctum Records.  So, with that in mind…here’s a few ideas on why I wanted to put this together…including a playlist with a sample from all the labels that are on Soundcloud.

Show Pics: Geographer @ The Mohawk (5/30)

Jeez. So I was walking the dog, thinking about all the photos left to edit from X Games Austin and I realized that I still owed Geographer a Show Pics post. After a great set at FFF8, I was looking for ward to checking out the band in a smaller venue, my home venue, The Mohawk. Joining them for the show was Idle Hands, ATH faves Empires and a great aftershow lineup of Hovvdy and Woozy.

Click through, peeps.

A Tale of Two Nights: Courtney Barnett in Austin (6.4 & 6.5)

Admittedly, I’m a sideline Courtney Barnett fan.  The tunes are good, and I enjoyed The Double EP, but these two nights were definitely meant for my ladyfriend, who many might call a super-fan.  So, for the two nights we shared together with Courtney Barnett, I just sat back and watched her enjoyment, while taking in the whole situation of one of indie rock’s fastest rising stars taking over Austin.

Show Pics: Summer Nights Party @ Empire (5/30)

We’re finally clearing some back inventory after the meltdown of 2015. Feels good to be up and stable. Last weekend, summer arrived. The skies cleared finally and it looks like we are in for a beautiful few months. To celebrate, Empire‘s various stages were filled local party jams to help everyone make that transition from spring to summer easy. I went there to catch up with Whiite Walls and The Black & White Years and to check out the new stuff from Night Drive (not just the cool shirts, new jams).

Show Pics: Dan Deacon @ The Mohawk (4/23)

Dan DeaconI think Austin may have skipped Spring.

I had never been a Dan Deacon fan, but recent tracks wooed me out last Thursday to The Mohawk to finally check out what many friends claimed to be an “event”, even chastising me for not having been. Indeed, I had a good time and, indeed, I enjoyed the live set musically along with the spectacle. Dan was joined on the lineup by Ben O’Brien and Prince Rama.

I have plenty of pics and a few thoughts after the break. Join me, won’t you?

Rey Pila Deliver Another Jam

Rey Pila

My Mexican brothers Rey Pila just shared a new song today from their upcoming LP and I’m once again enamored with what the band is doing.  Their style is certainly new wave, but with some killer beats and energetic choruses that will surely have you jumping up and down as you jam along with the band.  Today’s single, “What a Nice Surprise” is no different though it might just be their most pop inspired tune to date.  Vamos a escuchar.

Rey Pila will drop The New Sugar on May 5th via Cult Records.

Sleepy Folk From Shana Cleveland and The Sandcastles

shanaWhile you may know Shana Cleveland as the front lady of La Luz, you may not know of her side project Shana Cleveland and The Sandcastles, but I’m here to fix that. She’s got a single from this upcoming record’s release called “Golden Days,” which is a softly brewing number of folksy acoustic sound that slowly creeps along. This song shows promise for the May 26th release of Oh Man, Cover The Ground with will be released through Suicide Squeeze Records.
