More New Music from The Sloppy Heads

You’d think everyone would be all over this new record from The Sloppy Heads, after all, James McNew (of Yo La Tengo) record, and played on, the album. I really love this new single, although admittedly, it isn’t pushing any new boundaries; it’s just the perfect execution of rock n’ roll in the modern era. While the song settles into its run pretty immediately, the band jamming out (with organ play in tow) through the middling moments is what really shines to me; you don’t hear too many bands really taking the time to through some jamming in the middle of their tracks these days. Shrimper Records will be releasing the band’s debut LP, Useless Smile, on January 27th, and be forewarned that the more you play it, the more rewards it offers you…as a person, of course…and as a music fan.

Fresh Music from Tim Kasher

I’m going to try and act all cool and pretend like I was ever above being an emo kid. In fact, I think I’ll wear that badge proudly considering all the new acts coming up now that owe a huge debt to that late 90s era. Of course, Tim Kasher was a huge part of that scene and has continued to write great music ever since. He just announced he’ll be releasing a new solo album titled No Resolution, featuring the tune below. His lyrical prowess is the star, but the accompaniment here’s really great, particularly the backing string arrangements. The new record comes out on March 3rd via 15 Passenger.

PYAITK: “Please” by Blanck Mass

“Please” is a slow burn single from the upcoming record by Blanck Mass. Undercurrents of aggression in silken tones…

Check this press blurb.

As humans, we are aware of our inner beast and should therefore be able to control it. We understand our hard-wired primal urges and why they exist in an evolutional sense. We understand the relationship between mind and body. Highly evolved and intelligent, we should be able to recognize these genetic hangovers and control them as a means to act positively and move forward as a compassionate species. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Recent global events have proven this. The human race is consuming itself.

World Eater, the new album by Benjamin John Powers Blanck Mass project, is a reaction to this. There is an underlying violence and anger throughout the record, even though some of these tracks are the closest Power has ever come to writing, in his words, actual love songs.

Preorder World Eater.

ATX Spotlight: New Wiretree Music

Austin’s Wiretree have been relatively quiet the last few years, but it looks like at long last we get to hear brand new music from the band, and it sounds like we’re in for a real treat. Our first listen to the group’s new work comes via this brief gem, appearing on their album Towards the Sky. It’s a gentle pop track, centered on acoustic strumming, playful piano and voice; there’s a lightness to the song’s simplicity, really bringing the track’s harmony to the forefront. Consider me a fan, and I hope you’ll consider yourself one too; the album drops on March 1st.

New Pop Tune from Funeral Advantage

Listening to this new single Funeral Advantage, it reminds me that one can elevate the sounds of bedroom pop. The recording is a touch quiet, with the vocal resting deep in the heart of the mix. But, that being said, the accompanying music shines really brightly, allowing the song to take on a strong indiepop sound…basically guaranteeing enjoyment for my ears. You’ll find the song available on the new Please Help Me EP, which is written as a piece about hope, about coming out of the dark side of a confusing world. It’ll be released by The Native Sound on February 24th.

Diet Cig Give Us More To Love

If it isn’t abundantly clear yet, we here at ATH are big fans of that band called Diet Cig. We just saw them at Sound on Sound, have attended their show in the past, and love the energy brought by the duo in everything they do. With that said, I was obviously excited this morning to get an email delivering news of a new single and the release of their debut album. I already can’t wait for the album and a chance to see them again come March. Very excite!

Swear I’m Good at This will come out on April 7th via Frenchkiss Records.

Cloudberry Records Announce Some Other Day Collection

You can always count on a handful of dependable labels to hand you gifts you didn’t even know you wanted, such as the announcement of this collection of Some Other Day tunes. You can read a great interview about the foundation of the band via this interview on the Cloudberry Blog, then fall in love with the angelic combination of voice between Mark Walshe and Suzy Allen. This single offering also has that ringing jangle that indiepop fans will clamor for, leaving room for soaring harmonies between the two main songwriters for the group. The release of the compilation is slated to come later this year, so wait in anticipation.

The Return of Slowdive

After waiting almost 22 years, we can all finally rejoice that there’s new Slowdive music coming our way. The band reunited in 2014 to get some things going for reunion shows, sparking that creativity that has led them to sign with Dead Oceans. If this song’s swelling wall of guitars sounds familiar, well, that’s because they’re just one of the staples of indie rock that so many after them have ripped off. I look forward to what’s coming from these guys, so stay tuned to hear what’s next. Hope they can help make 2017 just a touch brighter.

Jazzy Number from Mega Bog

The excitement is building for those of us in the know about Erin Birgy’s project, Mega Bog. In fact, there’s been a larger push on this second LP, with many sites taking note of her work. This new single has some real jazzy qualities to it, though the vocal delivery still has that poetic playfulness for balance (sort of reminds me of early Fiery Furnaces). It almost sounds like the most kick ass elevator music you ever heard…and I love the recording touch of a nice bit of laughter at the end, celebrating the fun of songwriting. I think Happy Together is going to come across as one of the most eccentric bits of pop infused music we’ll hear this year; it hits on February 3rd via Nicey Music.
