ATX Spotlight: New Music from The Gents

thegentsAfter announcing earlier in the year that The Gents wouldbe releasing a collection of songs broken up into four EPs, we get our first glimpse at Part II of the IV series. The band does an excellent job of blending their folk influences with their natural willingness to use pop structures, leaving you with singable moments that remain in your ears (and hearts) as you press repeat over and over again. The song takes a brief detour mid-track, only to swell back in with the emphasis on “paperweight.” Sounds like they’ve done it again…so give it a little listen while we await the rest of the EP.

More New Music from The Holy

theholyNot too long ago we brought you a great track from The Holy, one of the recent signings from our friends over at Soliti in Finland. Today we’re back to offer you a glimpse at the band’s brand of orchestrated indie rock. This number seemingly rushes forward to the drum work, but the element of strings and vocals steady the song just a bit. Still, synth stabs and the accompanying video for the single express nothing but pure exuberance…reminding you to just let yourself go. The label will release the band’s new EP, Escher and Random Notes at the beginning of August.

Pleased to Meet You: Nunofyrbeeswax

nunofyrbeeswaxWhen bands hit you up via a recommendation of one of your favorites, then you know you’ve done something right. That’s basically how Nunofyrbeeswax came into my view, bringing with them a brand of lo-fi punk rock. On their latest album, On Everything, they walk the line between spasticrock and classic post-punk. They employ knife-like angular guitar cuts, call-and response vocals and always fueled by their own infectious energy. The band is also part of a group called The Fingers, so that gives you yet another great act to spend your time with…two great bands, one quick post. Click play below, and have a little fun with your rock n’ roll today.

Hope You’re Listening to Turnip King

carsongA few weeks ago, Turnip King popped up on my radar with their track “Metonymy,” which was our first listen to their forthcoming LP. Now, they’ve left us all with this dreamy new tune and it’s accompanying video, which features cropped images atop images…in my eyes, the video encompasses the beautiful moments of life, even the silly ones turning into meaningful ones. The song itself is like a dreamier, noisier Mazzy Star with the distortion billowing out to greet the harmony. Look for Laika on August 19th via Fire Talk.

ATX Spotlight: New Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes

calrsaganIt comes as no surprise to folks in Austin that Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes should be our next big local export, as the band have been taking over this town show by show. Today they dropped a brand new single off brandishing their wall of noise and punishing vocals. For me, what’s always been impressive is the underlying pop sensibility in the band’s sound, coating their melodies with distortion and brooding bass lines. The band’s about to release their self-titled effort on August 19th via Super Secret Records; it’s time the rest of the world took note!

Banger From Happy Diving

unnamed (3)As many of us are likely struggling to get moving today after too much fun yesterday, this new single from San Francisco’s Happy Diving might be the perfect hangover cure. Yeah “Holy Ground” may start off as a sort of slacker rock tune, but hold tight, the true wall of guitars comes in pretty quick. The meandering feel, with that slow build into awesomeness is sure to perk up your Tuesday. It’s done it for me.

Electric Soul Unity will drop on August 19th via Topshelf Records.

Irresistible Pop Music From Young Scum

13528861_1157137574345824_381270789673127550_nSometimes a pop song comes your way out of nowhere and it completely changes your mood for the entire day. Well this new one from Richmond based Young Scum has done exactly that. There is so much to enjoy here with “If you Say That”. What starts as a mostly brit-pop, jangly tune, slowly evolves with some heavier guitars to really rock some faces near the end. Yep that’ll do.

Young Scum will release a new EP entitled Zona on July 24th via Citrus City Records.

Chilled Pop from Lady the Beard

ladythebeardSettling into a short week are we? Then perhaps you’d like to chill out at your desk with some relaxing vibes? Take a listen to this Lady the Beard single, looping beats over a bright guitar line. Reminds me of a Californian version of the Radio Dept, hiding the vocals just behind the mix and coating them in a little haze. If you listen softly there’s a nice little vocal accompaniment lurking in there too, giving you the ultimate relaxation on this Tuesday morning. Find a way to enjoy yourself today.

New Music from Earth Girls

earthgirlsEarth Girls just recently came onto my radar via their participation in the excellent Typical Girls Comp (which you can buy here)…and now I hear they’re readying a new LP. Our first listen to this new work gives us this bouncy bit of infectious pop. There’s an innocence in Liz Panella’s voice that looks back to the purity of pop songwriting; it’s sweet and seemingly devoid of studio manipulation. Blasting in at just over two minutes, you’re hooked before you have a chance to look back, so you’ve gotta play it again, right? Look for the group’s debutLP, Wanderlust, on August 12th via Grave Mistake Records.

ATX Spotlight: Genuine Leather Return

genuineleatherBands come and go in Austin, but you can stay around as long as you’re out there working hard, and often, playing your own game. This is much the case with Genuine Leather, who are set to release their 3rd LP this year; we’ve covered several of their earlier releases, so there’s no reason not to spread news on this one, especially considering the interesting fashion in which they’re choosing to release this one…a song a week for 16 weeks. This one channels a bit of Austinites Spoon, though with a bit more funk in it. I look forward to seeing where these guys go as they move forward towards the release of Brunch.
