If you don’t know Telemarket, you should check them out. I didn’t, and thanks to an email from Adam Wayton, lead singer and producer of the 5-piece band out of Athens, GA, I was turned on to their debut album, Ad Nauseam, released in late August for the first time on Science Project Records, an affiliate of Cloud Recordings. The Rishis Announce Debut Album for Elephant 6 + Share Wake Up

With the Elephant Six documentary floating about in limited theaters, we’re lucky that the historic label is adding another act to the roster…The Rishis. The duo of Sofie Lute and Ranjan Avasthi have fleshed out their band with members of the collective, so in a sense, this if a full Elephant 6 family affair. Musically, it’s not too far off from that either, moving back and forth between explorative folk and fuzzy rockers, with this new single hitting more on the folk side of the realm. The whole of this single works over a light strum and this familiar vocal, as if you’re sitting in a guitar circle with a bunch of close friends. And, as would only make sense on the label, the track is elevated by the atmospheric nuances that float in just beneath the surface. We’re getting a cold freeze down here in Texas, but when the band release August Moon this April via Elephant 6/Cloud Recordings you can already tell that this will be perfect vibes for blossoming trees and cool breezes.

Night Palace Share Strange Powers Visualizer

This weekend you’ll be able to pick up the debut long player from Night Palace, but why not coast into your listen with one final visual experience to seduce you into the group’s sound. Interestingly, the visual accompaniment has this more bubbling psychedelia, while the track definitely walks the line of a more playful brand of indiepop. But, the sound is definitely filled to the brim with textures, which makes it all the more enchanting, elevating the song beyond the stellar vocal performance from Avery Draut. Pretty sure you could spend your entire day spinning about beneath that heavenly voice, but don’t take my word for it…sample a few more tunes then grab Diving Rings come this Friday!

SXSW Interviews: Vision Video

Well our SXSW prep is in full force now as you may have noticed from the slew of interviews we’ve been posing over the last week or so. Monsoon Drop Don’t Move Video

Felt like we should hit up Thursday by starting off with some catchy hooks and blasting riffs! Good thing we’ve got this tune from Athens’ (Georgia) Monsoon. This song works back and forth between a sedate ballad and a hook laden pop rock tune, adding in these great little details that give the tune a bit of flare. Plus, just as you’re hooked on the style, there’s this closing change in direction, hinting at some of the artistry that’s lurking in their forthcoming Ghost Party LP. The album will be out next year, so for now, you can sit back and enjoy this fresh single!

Oh Ok Gets The Complete Reissue Treatment

Oh-OK, NYC, 1983 (?) Laura Levine

It’s been a great year or two for the history of Athens’ music scene, with reissues for Pylon and Love Tractor; now we can add Oh Ok to the mix too…they’ve just announced a reissue of the Complete Reissue (the Complet-ist Reissue perhaps?!). The band is made up of Linda Hopper (Magnapop) and Lynda Stipe (yes, Michael’s sister), whilst also featuring Matthew Sweet at times in later line-ups. This short introduction should have you lacing up your shoes and readying your pogo-moves; the rhythm section matching every twist and turn of the vocals. Quick and catchy, you’ll find this tune on the LP when it drops on January 29th courtesy of HHBTM.

Je Suis France Share Shapeshifter

I love the way this new track from Je Suis France sets you up. You get this noisy, almost rambunctious rock moment, quickly opening with this broad sweeping pop moment that sort of has this youthful sense of longing. Slight turns in the vocals remind me, in a sense, of the Wrens in the way that they wrap these joyous pop nuggets in tightly constructed elements of noise. Discordant and yet warm, the perfect sort of indie rock for a man with twee tendencies. You’ll find this track on the group’s new LP, Back to the Basics of Love, available via Ernest Jenning.

Way back in November we dropped some news of a new LP from our beloved Athens based rock band Deep State. Since the fall I haven’t heard a whole lot more buzz on the band so I was excited to receive notification of a new single/video from the group yesterday. This new track, “Son” features some of the most rock n roll, fast paced themed music the band has ever offered. I would imagine this jam is going to be an absolute banger in the live setting.

Deep State will release new LP The Path to Fast Oblivion on February 1st via Friendship Fever.

 

Promising Rock Number From Deep State

Athens based rock group Deep State wooed our ears around this time last year with banging track “Time Unrivaled” and we’ve been eagerly awaiting new music ever since. Well wait no longer fans as the band recently announced a new album and shared this raucous new single called “Under the Gun”. Here we see the band bringing the same level of intensity they did with last year’s release as the song powers through close to three minutes of gritty vocals and distorted bass lines. Don’t call them indie rock, this is true rock n roll.

Deep State will release The Path to Fast Oblivion on February 1st via Friendship Forever.

Did You Listen to Nana Grizol’s Theo Zumm

Back in 2017 Nana Grizol released the incredible Ursa Minor; it was one of my favorite releases that year, and one with staying power in my rotation. But, just this last week, the band put up some early recorded tracks from the group, some that made it onto later releases, and some not. I’ve been listening to these tracks pretty non-stop all evening with my daughter; it has this oddball charm that reminds me of my college years when I was looking for anything that could make me dance or laugh out loud. Seriously, this is how you should spend your morning, visiting Theo and his guitar in the early days of the band; you can grab Theo Zumm right HERE.
