ATX Premiere: Semihelix Share Slower Pace

Austin based outfit Semihelix came onto our radar in 2021 with the release of their album of the year worthy debut LP Recoil. Since then, we’ve been anxiously awaiting new tunes from the band and today is finally the day! For your listening pleasure is this new tune called “Slower Pace” which certainly doesn’t adhere to the song title with its short 1.5 minutes of bright, energy filled jangle pop. A true gem in the Austin scene.

This song is part of an upcoming EP due out sometime later this Fall. More info coming soon.

Have Another New Holy Wave Tune

Looks like Nathan has you all set up for some nice streams over the weekend, but I’d also encourage you to check out this new tune from our Austin friends in Holy Wave. “Interloper” is the title track of the bands brand new album and features a lot of the dreamy and psych oriented sounds we’ve grown to love about the band over the years. This one certainly has a Pink Floyd influence behind it, but a more pop orientation. Chalk it up as another hit for the Austin legends.

Holy Wave will release new album Interloped on July 3rd via Reverberation Appreciation Society.

One More From Brother Sports

Nathan and I have become big fans of local boys Brother Sports as they’ve released quite a bit of new music over the last couple of months. As we continue to hype up our new found band, here is yet another single from the group called “Mala”. For me, this is what I was hoping the new Strokes record might sound like (but didn’t). They take that guitar driven sound and throw in just a bit of grit and raw energy to create a truly special offering from a local act. Word on the street is Brother Sports will be dropping a new EP sometime next month.

More From Brother Sports

If you weren’t aware and trying to hate, the ATX music scene is still very much alive and well with new music coming out all the time. My evidence of the vibrant scene comes today from locals brother sports and their new track “I Still Remember (siempre)”. I like the relaxed, cool vibe of the song which plays nicely with the infectious beat and hazy themes. It seems as though we better start paying attention to this up and coming band as they continue to put out solid new music.

ATX Spotlight: New Gamma Dog

Today I am feeling a bit of local love with news of a single drop and upcoming album from ATX based dudes Gamma Dog. The guys just sent over this new track “Designer Love” and I’m finding lots to like about the direction of the sound. It definitely has a Strokes influenced sound with the garage style and quieter, effected vocals. For me, I dig the way it hits pretty heavy when the guitars fade for a second but then come back in with full force. You are sure to listen to this one a few times today and find lots to enjoy.

Gamma Dog will be releasing a new album sometime in early 2020.

More From Matthew Squires

Hey now I think we’ve made it abundantly clear we are big fans of our local ATX friend Matthew Squires and the music he creates. He’s always had a knack for being a just a tad left of center in the Austin indie scene while also churning out some absolutely beautiful songs over the years. As he prepares for the release of his new album Visions of America, Squires recently dropped the lead track for streaming enjoyment. This guy seriously continues to evolve into one of the most important songwriters in our city.

Visions of America will drop on August 30th.

ATX Spotlight: First Names

As much as we love sharing news of national/international bands, there’s nothing quite like the discovery of even more local talent. Today I’m pumped to share with you the premiere single “City Buses” from Austin, TX based outfit First Names. This one is going to be for those of you who like garage rock sounds with heavily distorted guitars, banging drums, and softer vocals. Bottom line, it shows a lot of promise for these young upstarts in our little city. Carry on.

ATX Spotlight: Calvin Locklear

I wish I could say I’m surprised when I discover new Austin artists since we think we know everything, but let’s get real, this town is full of up and coming artists waiting to be discovered. Take local songwriter Calvin Locklear for example. Prior to only a few days ago, I honestly had never heard his name mentioned despite my keen ear to the local scene. Well he’s recently released an EPs worth of material entitled No One is Listening and suggested we check out this track “Wet Cement” from the 6 song extended player. Immediately the voice of Locklear reminds me quite a bit of Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz) which, paired with his folk rock/R&B blend, creates something really in a genre all its own. It’s refreshing to hear something new is happening in Austin.

If you’re into it, Locklear has more music on Soundcloud and his entire new EP streaming on bandcamp.

ATX Spotlight: Hidden Ritual Share New Jam

unnamed-9A quick search tells me that we have somehow never shared any music from Austin based group Hidden Ritual. Today I fix this error by giving you their new track “Rat”. I’m immediately reminded here of some earlier Wolf Parade sounds if they went straight lo-fi pop. Hopefully that makes a little bit of sense to you music fans out there…. Either way, enjoy the track and share some love for Hidden Rituals.

This track appears on Always due out on October 21st via Monofonus Press.
