ATH Interview: The Fresh & Onlys @ Psych Fest 7

Fresh Onlys APF7 BannerTheir scene, their city, discovery, being a band, labels, projects, Spotify, sports – We had the opportunity to sit down with The Fresh & Onlys and talk music and people, and eventually a lot of sports. The interview went long and we love it. I thought about cutting it down, but these guys put it out there and to cut it would be a shame.

Big ups to the gentlemen for taking the time, being conversational and quite candid. It could have been even longer had my camera not over-heated, yeah, it over-heated.

Best Austin Bands at Austin Psych Fest

psychAustin Psych Fest is becoming a pretty big deal, bringing in some incredible bands from all over the globe, not to mention some encouraging the reunion of acts long forgotten by fans.  But, let’s not get carried away and forget that the festival is a homegrown fest, born from the ideas of members of The Black Angels and their friends.  And, like many an Austinite, they’re a proud bunch, so they’ve made sure the bill always has great locals that will represent our fair city.  Below you’ll find the Top 5 Austin Bands playing at this year’s festival, at least in my opinion….and they’re in no particular order Read more

Austin Psych Fest Interview 2014: Elephant Stone

elephantOne of the great things about Psych Fest, like many of our festivals in town, is that they realize that not every band can play, nor can every fan afford the shows.  So, they put in some work and lined up some opening shows on the Thursday before the official festival begins.  One of those acts I’ve been following for years: Elephant Stone.  They’re one of the many great acts playing over at Mohawk (there’s other shows at Red 7 too!); they’ll be playing at 9:00 PM outdoors. We caught up with Rishi Dhir for a quick interview before they make their way into town.  Read more

Psych Fest 2014 Interview: Greg Ashley

Greg Banner 2Ah yes, another festival in Austin! Actually, we’re really excited about Austin Psych Fest.  It’s got a remarkable line-up, though I’m a  bit bummed Primal Scream had to back out.  But, as we have a month to go, we want to start offering you some insight into the bands coming our way.  Our first interview is with Greg Ashley, who released Another Generation of Slaves to rave reviews, at least from our site.  We caught up with him before he comes into town.  Read more

New Music from Secret Colours (Austin Psych Fest Act)

secretcoloursAs the days draw closer to yet another festival in Austin, we’re starting to take a closer look at some of the lesser known bands on the list, and Secret Colours are my latest obsession.  I think this Chicago act speaks to the festivals diversity this year, offering a poppier glint on the broader psych spectrum.  Listening to their newest single reminds me of what a joy it was listening to early Of Montreal, using noisy touches of guitars and delicious bass parts to really suck you into the song.  If you’re not going to the festival, then I at least suggest you make way for Positive Distractions II to make its way into your playlist on April 29th.

The Charming Return of Woods

woodsAh. Finally a new Woods record is on its way.  There’s just something about the band and the various projects of the members that simply makes you feel welcome in the musical world they’ve created.  Sometimes it’s their classic rock harmonies that win you over, while other times it’s their desire to jam things out in a mellow fashion that grabs you.  Here, you get both of those, which reminds me of the fact that I think the band is one of the most endearing bands around (despite some of the drug association).  Their new record is titled With Light and With Love; it’ll be released by Woodsist on April 15th. They’ve also been included in the most excellent Austin Psych Fest schedule this year.

Psych Fest Preview: The Growlers

thegrowlersOne of the great things I love about Austin Psych Fest is the way the festival is slowly branching out beyond your stereotypical psychedelia into related territory.  This is the perfect case for Cali’s The Growlers, who do have some lineage, though I think their recent efforts put them well outside that spectrum.  Honestly, this is the highlight for the festival in my opinion; I’ve been jamming to their most recent record Hung at Heart since it came out earlier this year.  It has a definite California feel, especially in the bright ringing of the guitars, which is probably how they fit into the festival.  Or maybe it’s that organ hanging out on the record.

Regardless, if you’re going to be making it out to the festival this weekend, then this should be one of the acts you check out, and if not, then you should at least fall in love with their record.

The Growlers play Sunday, April 28th at the Levitation Tent at 10:30 PM.
