ATX Friday Night Show Spotlight

Austin-skyline-_9359-copyI always encourage you to go hit up the town on the weekends.  I know we’re all busy, but you can grab a fancy dinner, some drinks, and still have time to enjoy some of the great music this town has to offer.  There’s tons going on this weekend, so I’m going to spend a little time today looking at Friday night, that way you have time to plan your evening.  I even added some overly basic genres behind the shows to give you an idea at what you could be in for.  Read more

moon duo bannerMoon Duo is prepping the release of their new album, Shadow of the Sun, and with that, they’ll also be coming into Austin to show off their new jams…based on this interview, you might get to hear them all. I highly suggest you check these guys out; I’ve been impressed both times I’ve seen them.  They craft their shows specifically to fit their music, so you’re getting an experience, more than just a good old fashioned rock show. ATX Show Spotlight: Xetas Record Release @ Hotel Vegas (TONIGHT!)

XetasIn a week with several great local releases (Zoltars/Quiet Company included), you’ve got to show up tonight to catch the ballsy rock display that Xetas continuously bring to the stage. The work they’ve put into The Redeemer completely catches their live energy, harnessing it into a ball of fury that’s ready to destroy your Apple headphones; you’ll likely want to hear this record on the best stereo possible.  Go out to Hotel Vegas tonight, as they band will be joined by other local heavy-hitters, Spray Paint, Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes and New China.  And if you can’t make it out to the show, grab the album from 12XU; you won’t be let down, I swear it.

SXSW 2015 Hip-Hop: Berner

video-berner-drugstore-cowboy-mixtape-trailer-672x378Taylor Gang’s self-proclaimed Drug Store Cowboy, Berner, is returning to Austin for SXSW 2015. Berner performed several times throughout the week at last year’s SXSW, including a free Taylor Gang showcase that featured an impromptu one and done performance by label head Wiz Khalifa. This past year Berner put out a free mixtape with Cypress Hill frontman B-Real entitled Prohibition, continuing Berner’s history of excellent taste in beats and stoner-friendly lyrics. No specific shows have been set but Berner is officially set to perform at this year’s SXSW.

ATX Spotlight: Lowin Kick Out Another Jam

LowinWe gotta support the ATX this time of year, and what better way to do it than tossing out this new tune from Lowin.  On their latest tune, there’s really two sides to offer up, both equally engaging for audiences.  Sara Houser builds a driving rhythm with the rest of the band, her voice just below a powerful wail.  Carry on beyond the 2.5 minute mark and you’ll see the band switch things, offering up a more swollen version of indie rock, building with chords that wait to crash down on the listener. It’s just another reason to keep an eye out for their Royal Jelly EP, which hits on April 7th.

ATX Spotlight: Decisions Decions Are Ready to Rock

228747_1088522405580_3663907_nDisclaimer.  I’m friends with Stuart from Decisions Decisions. Disclaimer. Stuart was also in the Rise, who I think any old-school Austin music fans fawned over.  His new band has that same tenacity, living somewhere between the realm of post-punk and hardcore. The vocals border on angsty scream, though they have a bit more control, allowing the actual lyrics to shine through the track.  The band have just uploaded 8 new songs to their Bandcamp page…and they’re worthy of your time, if rocking out real loud is your style.  Check it…and I’ll keep you posted on upcoming shows.

ATX Spotlight: Abram Shook Announces New Album

Abram ShookWe’ve been behind Abram Shook since his early Great Nostalgic days, and we were especially happy to see his progression with Sun Marquee last year.  It seems that he’s not long to stay in one place, as his newest single continues to show is continually evolving sound; he includes little bits of drum samples in this track, as well as some funky guitar chops.  His ability to operate within varying genres and styles is one of the many reasons his music’s always been so enticing, which makes us even happier he’ll have another album, Landscape Dream, coming our way this year; it’ll see a release via Western Vinyl on May 12th.

Show Review: Taft Album Release @ Cheer Up Charlies (2.12)

TaftWe hit up good ol’ Cheer Up Charlies Thursday night to support our friends at Punctum Records as they released Taft‘s Groove Redundant…they were joined by Isaiah the Mosaic, Lomelda and Sweet Spirit helped them close out in style.  I’d have to say it was a pretty impressive line-up, and a rather impressive crowd.

Read on for our thoughts on the show and some photos from B. Gray.

ATX Show Spotlight: Pick a Show, Any Show

Austin-skyline-_9359-copyThursday’s pretty packed with local gigs to get you out of your doldrums and partake in some music.  As it stands, I see three rad shows you could attend…so why waste time.

Hotel Vegas has our favorites Grape St, slanging catchy garage rock, joined by their friends Booher and Idle de’Classe as the opening acts. This show is built for rock n’ roll fans.

Cheer Up Charlies has the Taft album release. There’s some heavy-hitters opening, with Sweet Spirit, Lomelda and Isaiah the Mosaic opening the night’s festivities.  If you go, pick up Taft’s new album.

Holy Mountain has a show hosted by our archenemies and friends from Side One Track One. John always puts together a good line-up (which is why I hate him); he’s got Ton Tons, Wild Moccasins and Tele Novella, so you get your creative pop mix here.

Sample some songs from Grape St, Taft and Tele Novella.
