Austin Spotlight: The Harvest Thieves

a1146701711_10As ATH has always been a big supporter of Guns of Navarone, we were overly excited when our friends in the band sent us over music from a new project they’ve been working on.  This Austin supergroup going by the name of The Harvest Thieves features members of the aforementioned Guns as well as East Cameron Folkcore and Bankrupt & The Borrowers.  Already the new group have an EP entitled Lightning in a Bottle up and available for download over on bandcamp at a “pay what you want” set up.  I’m finding myself immediately drawn to the 2nd track  from the EP “Escape From the Paper City”.  It’s clearly a country/americana themed tune with an almost anthemic sound and an extremely full sound that drives the song home.  It seems rare that we find this kind of quality Texas themed sounds in this town anymore and I couldn’t be more excited about this new project.

Stay tuned for more.

Donations For Jon Pettis & Family

TheVersatileSyndicate_062-1It was a sad day in the Austin music scene on Friday and this weekend as news spread about the death of Bankrupt and the Borrowers multi-instrumentalist  Jon Pettis.  Jon and his band were well known for their rowdy live shows and their drive to make a name for themselves in and out of Austin.  If you ever experienced a Bankrupt and the Borrowers live show, you know that Jon always put himself into every set.  As a friend of ATH and a prominent member of the Austin music scene, we would like to offer our condolences to Jon, his family and friends, and his fellow members of Bankrupt and the Borrowers.  You will be deeply missed by all.  If you would like to help out Jon’s family and his fiancee, The Versatile Syndicate has set up a donation page to help out in their time of grieving.  Whether is be $1 or $100, I’m sure anything will help.  Plans are currently being made for a benefit show and we’ll let you know the details when we know them.  R.I.P. Jon Pettis.  Donation Page.  News of Jon’s death came out Friday via the Austinist.

Kinks Hoot Night @ Ruta Maya (4/11)

hootnightRuta Maya is a venue that probably doesn’t get enough coverage on our site, so we thought we’d throw some love their way for a sweet event they’ve got going down Saturday night.  The show is a special one that features several of our favorite local up and coming acts doing nothing but Kinks covers.  Lineup includes ATH favorites Golden Bear, The Bubbles, Bankrupt and the Borrowers, Tunnels, Zookeeper and a mess load of other bands that won’t all fit on this page.  Music starts at 8:30 with a cover charge of $7.  You can get more info on the attached poster or on the Hoot Night myspace page.
