Last Week’s Jams (4.24 – 4.28)

I felt like I let you down last week, having only really covered about 17 new songs, but in that, we tried to make sure there were some burners in there that would get you excited. What better way to start off this week’s recap than bringing you the world’s best power pop outfit, The High Water Marks and their new single. We got a new RVG tune, which is never a bad place to be, plus Beach Fossils continued to show their growth on the new LP. And, it wouldn’t be us if there was no Austin contingent, so we ran an acoustic session from Redbud, plus the latest from Dress Warm. Take a listen.

Stream New Album From Bedroom

Happy almost weekend to all you loyal ATH fans out there. While you step away and possibly enjoy some relaxing new tunes this weekend, might a suggest this stellar new album entitled Thread from Nasville based songwriter Noah Kittinger under his recording moniker Bedroom. Kittinger is now working on his fourth release as Bedroom and each one has shown a young artist maturing into a seasoned songwriter, capable of holding his own amongst the greats. The new album is at times delicate, but also full of some twangy, Southern inspiration and just the slightest hint of experimentation to keep things fresh and vibrant. Right now, I am loving the twang and alt-country vibe of “All Good” while I think about the possibilities of weekend freedom.

Bedroom’s new album Thread is available for physical pre-order now or totally streamable below.

Steven Van Betten Shares Flame In Your Eye

Undoubtedly, the pandemic/quarantine has changed a lot about the way artists are recording and communicating with one another. For LA’s Steven van Betten, who plays with Fell Runner and Kidi Band, recording in his living room seems perfectly fitting for his voice; it’s that intimate sound, barely crackling through your speakers as your mind drifts to wherever it wants to head. This is that shared whisper between artist and listener. Some days you just wake up and you want something comforting, and for me, this song speaks to that sentiment. Plus, it’s part of the Future Unknown Series, which is donating proceeds from all releases to Black Lives Matter LA.

Hobby Club Drop Another Single

Feel like Hobby Club have been peaking into my record collection. Beth’s voice is powerful and up front; her performance is like she controls the room around her, even when speaking through the speakers. Behind her, there’s these jagged little jangling guitar lines, sharp and turning; they seem to match the drum beat perfectly, struck at just the right time to maximize the infectiousness. Important and fun, that’s how this feels to me, like I need to/have to listen, but I can kick up the feet just a little bit while in the process. I’m looking forward to the duo’s debut EP on Friday!

Quick One From Mr. Husband

If you aren’t familiar with the name Kenny Tompkins, you really should be. He’s released tons of home recordings over the last several years and helped create super rising indie label Yellow K Records. He’s done it all. Today he’s let loose on us this new single called “Riding a Lightning Bolt” under his new moniker Mr. Husband. It’s a short, somewhat quiet pop tune that sounds like it came straight from Mr. Tompkins ever fruitful home recordings. I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

This track appears on Mr. Husband’s debut album Plaid on Plaid due out on May 5th via Yellow K Records.

Body Double to ReIssue Tom Diabo

diaboAt the age of 30, Tom Diabo had been battling cancer for seven years, and those seven years brought gifts that only his family was meant to hear…until now. Almost 30 years after his death, Body Double is releasing a collection of his songs under the title Dark Star. Musically, there’s a tragic beauty being presented right here on this single from the release; I was entranced almost immediately.  Diabo’s vocals are deep and hallowed, often looped on top of another. It’s really interesting and quite unique, thus I’m sharing with you, hoping you’ll be as intrigued; the release is scheduled for June 2nd.
